Edited by Maureen Harrison and Steve Gilbert

For someone who claimed he had been educated by “littles” – a little now and a little then – Abraham Lincoln displayed a remarkable facility in his use of the written word.

In the simple yet memorable eloquence of The Greatest Speeches of Abraham Lincoln, proclamations and personal correspondence are recorded in a representative collection of 22 documents.

This volume contains, complete and unabridged, the Address Before the Young Men’s Lyceum of Springfield, Illinois (1838), which emphasized a theme Lincoln was to return to repeatedly, namely, the capacity of a people to govern themselves; the First Inaugural Address (1861), in which he appealed to the people of an already divided union for sectional harmony; the Letter to Mrs Bixby (1864), expressing Lincoln’s regrets over the wartime deaths of her five sons and many more.

An invaluable reference for history students, this important volume will also fascinate admirers of Abraham Lincoln, Americana enthusiasts, Civil War buffs and any lover of the finely crafted phrase.

He is both the living conscience of the Tibetan people and an internationally respected human rights symbol. His high-profile appearances and books have fueled the surging popularity of Buddhism in the United States and throughout the West. This new, up-to-date biography provides insight into the curious and winning personality of the Dalai Lama as a boy and his wisdom as a man. His story is revealed from early family life to his experiences in the world, his education as the 14th incarnation of the Lama, his exile in India and his current struggles to help Tibet regain its independence from China. Especially helpful is the historical overview of the Tibetan crisis after the Chinese invasion. A timeline and glossary supplement the text. Though the book is written especially for high school students, it will also immensely interest general readers.

This book tells us about Einstein's childhood, the time when he left school and how he debunked people's belief that he was dumb and lacked intelligence. The book describes his childhood in Germany and then his teens in Italy. Einstein took a diploma exam in Zurich and then failing to find a suitable job, he worked as a patent clerk in Switzerland. Here, he wrote some of the most important scientific papers in the field of theoretical physics.

The writers go into a great detail about Albert Einstein's scientific contributions, which include the famous paper on the photoelectric effect. Einstein was later awarded a Nobel Prize for this work. Then, he wrote his famous paper on the theory of relativity which became a founding principal for the nuclear bomb. He was one of the scientists who convinced American President Roosevelt that the Nazis were attempting to make a nuclear bomb. In 1952, Albert Einstein was offered the Presidency of Israel. He was a pacifist his entire life and fought for civil rights. He died in 1955 of internal bleeding and his brain has been stored for study by the future generations.

Mother Teresa transcended her ordinariness with a belief that she was called to her life's work and she used the unsought fame it brought her, to further her causes. In this new biography, students will follow Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu from her humble Albanian birth to worldwide celebrity as Mother Teresa. The nun who attended to the dying and diseased in Calcutta, India and established her Missionaries of Charity around the world had to prove to the hierarchy in the patriarchal Catholic system, even in the Vatican, that she was capable of handling each project she proposed. With her vision to live and work among the 'poorest of the poor' was founded a new order that tended to society's outcasts. This narrative chronicles the expansion and success of Mother Teresa's order and the eventual recognition that was showered on her efforts. This increasing attention led to scrutiny and criticism of her ideology, methods of care and financing. The accusations of hypocrisy, among others, are discussed, as is her controversial beatification. Readers will be challenged to consider for themselves whether Mother Teresa deserves to be sainted.

The revolutionary, anti-Imperialist ideals he lived and died for now appeal to a new generation of 21st-century men and women. Che Guevara: A Biography provides an introduction to the famous revolutionary leader and reveals how his early life prepared him for leadership in the Cuban Revolution. It also explores his revolutionary activities in Africa and Bolivia, as well as the circumstances surrounding his tragic death on October 9, 1967. The book includes original information on the 1997 discovery of the hidden remains of his body and on the celebration of his life and ideals by the socialist regime in Cuba. It also looks at the reasons why leftist political leaders, movements and governments in Latin America and the Caribbean still pay homage to this charismatic man.

Following intense international pressure on the Apartheid government, he was finally freed in 1990. Everyone should know the life story of Nelson Mandela, one of the greatest leaders of all time, the first black president of South Africa and a major world statesman. His inspiring life receives a fresh retelling in this new biography written especially for general readers and students. This volume is an authoritative and enjoyable way not only to understand a great man, but also to understand a critical time in world history and race relations. Through the landmark presidency of South Africa and post Nobel Peace Prize years, up until today, he has continued as a peacemaker and agent for change. A timeline, photo essay and selected bibliography complement the narrative.

This biography is a stellar introduction to the foremost leader of the civil rights movement. In gripping narrative style, it describes young Martin as son and grandson of formidable preachers, drawn to his calling as a minister too, but as one who would take on the entrenched racism of the South and North, through a nonviolent movement that changed the course of American history. King's story is compelling, right from his early life in an insular community of blacks in Atlanta, to his education at Morehouse College, Crozer Theological Seminary and Boston University, to his courtship of Coretta Scott leading into the early days of the civil rights movement and his role of leadership in the major demonstrations and sit-ins that took place, mainly in the South. We gain critical insight into the Kennedy and Johnson Administrations, as King negotiated with the presidents for equal rights for blacks.

This book contains 39 powerful lessons of personal change, gleaned from Gandhi's life. It offers us invaluable advice on creating and leading an enlightened life, a more meaningful, purpose-driven, self-aware and socially responsible life. Drawing from a diverse range of fields such as psychology, management, leadership, philosophy and spirituality, Anand Kumarasamy explains and illustrates each of these lessons in language that is simple, vivid and highly interesting. These lessons are based on timeless principles which, if deeply reflected upon and integrated into our daily lives, can powerfully transform us while positively impacting the world around us.

The three cardinals of Gandhian Philosophy -truth, love and non-violence are so coherent, cohesive and co-focal that the absence of even one breaches the wholesomeness of the structure. However, all these elements ought to be understood across a much wider plane and in a much deeper sense beyond the threshold of their common meanings. The importance of the human factor in contemporary management can be seen in its finest form in Gandhian Management. Gandhiji's humanitarian canvas was so global and clarion call for natural justice so intense that he became an institution by himself much before the world discovered this reality.

Bapu had failed to convince two people in his lifetime, one was Jinnah and the other was Harilal. This novel was simultaneously serialized in the Sunday supplements of three Gujarati Dailies: Sam Kaleen of Bombay, Jansatta of Ahmedabad and Loksatta of Vadodra. In this book the author tries to make an ardent effort to understand yet another enigmatic facet of human life. The tussle between the father and the son was the most poignant and pathetic story of their lives. When Gandhi, who was busy attending meetings and conferences where the fate of forty crore Indians was to be decided often found headline in a newspaper screaming -Police Arrested Drunk Harilal For Creating A Scene On The Road and sometimes Harilal himself from the dais of the fundamentalist Muslim organization's meeting -'I shall continue fighting till Ba and Bapu embrace Islam.'

It was in Africa that he first experimented with the powerful weapon of Satyagraha, which was to later change the face of the Indian struggle for independence.

Put your principles to real practice, this was his message to the contemporary world. To him God was Truth and Truth was God. Here are essays and reflections on Mahatma Gandhi, one of the outstanding personalities not only of our time but of all times. Gandhiji was the greatest moral force in Indian history. For the accomplishment of liberty, justice and peace, he rediscovered the old techniques of Ahimsa and Satyagraha. He revealed to the masses a power not of rifles and machine guns, but the power innate in each individual, a power which this war-haunted world can exploit fully in making wars impossible. This book contains tribute to the Father of the Nation, from prominent thinkers like C. Fandrews, Aldous Huxley, Lin Yutang, A. Coomaraswamy, Sri Aurobindo and many others. Some of Gandhiji's most distinct and famous speeches are brought together in an appendix in this volume.

In this book, the contributors explain how certain Gandhian concepts can be used for our nation’s advancement. For example, ‘Gandhian engineering’ can help boost India’s progress with its focus on getting more from fewer resources for more people. In addition, the gram swaraj approach alone can stop the mass exodus of youth from villages to cities in search of jobs—a major worry for urban planners and village economies today. These are just a few of the many applicable solutions based on Gandhi’s ideas you will come across in these pages.
