Goddess Durga is one of the most revered goddesses in Hinduism. The Kalamkari depicts the goddess killing the demon Mahisasur. Variegated colours have been used to portray the figures. The special feature of the Kalamkari painting is the use of natural dye colours that are extracted from bark, flower and root. This form of painting demands lot of treatment before and after the painting is completed on cotton fabric. Depending on the treatment of cloth, or quality of the mordant, the colours change accordingly. Every step from soaking the cloth, to sketching the outlines to washing and drying the cloth, is done carefully and correctly.
