The beautiful painting of Lord Shiva, one of the Trinity, the other two being Lord Brahma and Vishnu, is given a refine and spectacular treatment in the traditional Batik style. Lord Shiva, as the Nataraj, represents the rhythmic motion of life. He is considered the Master of all the 64 forms of dance mudras. The painting in variegated colours is full of life and enthusiasm. The method of waxing and then dewaxing, a characteristic feature of this genre of painting, gives rise to a special effect in the painting.

It is believed that on the auspicious occasion of Maha Shivaratri, Shiva performs the ecstatic dance of realization (Nataraja). The dance symbolises the thrill of god-realisation. Beyond the realms of the waking, dream and deep-sleep states of consciousness. Beyond the ' experiences of the body and its perceptions, the mind and its feelings, the intellect and its thoughts lies the bliss of Godhood. Shiva reaches this state of Godhood and dances with the intoxication of supreme bliss.
