Trishul (Trident) symbolizes the Lord's three basic powers: will, action and knowledge. As a weapon the trident represents the instrument of punishment to the evildoers on all the three planes - spiritual, subtle and physical.

One of the Trinity Gods in Hinduism, the other two being Lord Brahma, who is responsible for creation of the Universe, and Lord Vishnu, who is responsible for the preservation of the Universe, Lord Shiva is responsible for the destruction and regeneration of the Universe and His trident plays a key role in destruction of the evil forces.
