The beautiful image of the Guru Dattatreya is nicely carved out of single block of marble by the sculptor revealing some attractive characteristics of the marble sculpture. The guru is considered by some Hindus in western India to be God and an incarnation of the Trinity: Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshar. Datta means ‘Given;’ and is called so because the divine trinity have ‘given’ themselves in the form of a son to the sage couple Atri and Anasuya. Awadhoota is the son of Atri, hence the name ‘Atreya.’

In the Nath tradition, Ahe is identified as an Avatar or incarnation of Lord Shiva and as the Adi-Guru (First Teacher) of the Adinath Sampradaya of the Nathas. Although Dattatreya was at first a ‘Lord of Yoga’ revealing Tantric traits, the god was soon assimilated into the more devotional cults. He is still worshipped by millions of Hindus and approached more as a benevolent God. The three heads of the figure, which are of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, and six hands, have been gracefully carved out. They are wearing gold plates and the handmade designs sparkle in the statues. The smiling faces of the trinity are amazing. The god is accompanied by the cow. The godheads have been beautifully decorated and even the cow is painted well.
