Description:

Sri Ramana Maharshi (1879 to 1950 A.D.)

Venkataramana was a lad in his teens in Madurai in South India. Urged by an inner call, the body played the truant, slipped away from home and soon found himself in the solitary caves of the Arunachala Hills. There he forgot the world, and, insensible to hunger and thirst and reckless of the ravages which crawling creatures wrought on his body, he immersed himself in concentrated meditation.

After a number of years of his phenomenal tapas, incredibly unrelieved by any break whatsoever, he emerged with the realization of the Supreme Reality and of the identity of his Self with it. Liberated by that realization from the chains of finitude, he became a Jivanmukta. Proclaimed a Maharsh from that time, Bhagavan Ramana, as he was reverently adored lived ever after in his ashram at Tiruvannamalai in Sahaja Samadhi, always established in the Spirit and overlooking the things, of the World with a smiling serenity.

A living witness to Advaita anubhava, Sri Ramana spent the remainder of his days conveying counsel through his unparted lips and providing comfort by the beam of his gracious eyes to the countless disciples and devotees who sought refuge at his holy feet from their ills of mind and body. ‘Know thy Self and the world will not torment thee was the central teaching of this modern edition of Vamadeva of yore.

    Description:

    About the Book
Candipatha, a part of the Markandeya Purana, which is one of the eighteen major Puranas, is its most important segment. Apart from Sridurgasaptasati, which forms the core of Candipatha, there are, preceding and succeeding it, several hymns of equal importance and, in the course of its ritual performance, all these hymns, as an integral totality, have to be recited as indicated in this book.

Candipatha celebrates the Feminine Power, Durga – Sakti – with her innumerable names, across in this sacred text, represents the quintessential woman. She is the source, substratum and ultimate Life Force. All the gods, men, birds, animal, even demons, all the elements, all moving and stationary objects are but Her fragmental particles. The universe is Her playground as well as Her play. At will, She creates, sustains and dissolves it. In Candipatha we see Her in Her full glory, majesty and splendor. As the Mother, She loves and protects Her children and as the invincible Kali, She decimates the forces of evil when they threaten righteousness, peace and Her devotees in the world.

The present publication includes, in addition to Sridurgasaptasati and the other associate hymns, a detailed Introductory Essay, which besides discussing the contents and importance of this work and its symbolism, provides a panoramic view of the Mother worship through the millennia. The four appendices include (i) Names, Adjectives, Incarnations, Epithets, etc., of the Mother Goddess (ii) Weapons mentioned in the text and their functions (iii) Glossary of important terms and (iv) the First-line index of Sanskrit verses, chapter-wise.

    Bhuta-Damara Tantra (Sanskrit & English)
    Bhuta-Damara Tantra (Sanskrit & English)
Bhoot means, ‘Past’ and Damar means ‘fierce. Hence this is a Tantra, which liberates the seeker from the fierce sins of past and make his/her present and future better. Being, seem to be a broken link of Kashmir Shaivism, it is chatushpeeth Tantra of Sri Krodha Bahirave, who is expansion of supreme Lord Sri Swacchanda Bhairava. He is seer sage of the Mantra of Mata Cchinnamasta Ji. He is Lord of South and Once worshiped as per given rituals, he would certainly eradicate fears of his worshipers.

This translation is done to brake a jinx, which tells that ‘Bhoot’ means ghost!!! or this Tantra, deals with exorcisms of ghost enchanting etc!! This is an approach to establish the glory of it; which it had during its epoch. This would certainly be a great readout for worshipers of Sri Bhairava.

    About the Author

Elisabeth Benard became interested in India at the age of twelve years when her father first brought back Hindu image from a trip to India. For many years she looked at these image in her family library never dreaming that one day she would become a scholar in Indian religions. She researched in India under the auspicious of the American Institute of Indian Studies and received her doctorate from Columbia University. She has lectured widely in the United States, including at Smithsonian Institute and Asia Society, as well as in India and Japan. She has taught at Princeton, Rutgers University, Collage of Wooster and the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Presently she is teaching Hinduism, Women in Religion, and Asian Religions at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas.

    ABOUT THE BOOK:

This is the first monograph which examines the rare Hindu and Buddhist Tantric Goddess, Chinnamasta, her rituals, her names and forms (namarupa) and their symbolism by comparing and contrasting her sadhanas (spiritual practices) in Hinduism and Buddhism. The entire Hindu "Chinnamastatantra" section from the Sakta Pramoda, the Buddhist "Chinnamunda Vajravarahisadhana" and the "Trikayavajrayoginistuti" are translated for the first time into English. Since Chinnamasta is a rare goddess, her texts were not popularized or made "fashionable" according to the dictates of a particular group at a particular time. The earliest extant texts date from the ninth and tenth centuries-a time when Hindu and Buddhist Tantras were developing under common influences in the same places in India. Having such texts about Chinnamasta Chinnamasta from these centuries, one can begin to understand the mutuality of a general Tantric tradition and the exclusivity of a particular Hindu or Buddhist Tantric tradition. Hence the study, not only examines Chinnamasta, but also attempts to understand what is a Tantric tradition.

    Foreword

Elisabeth Benard’s work on the Hindu-Buddhist goddess Chinnamastã is a product of indefatigable energy, not overlooking any lead from Sanskrit and Tibetan texts or from knowledgeable informants. So to cast light on a goddess that was strangely obscure and yet implicates any Indian goddess properly to be called wondrous or arousing of awe. Although completed in the United States, her treatise does not follow a History of Religions approach with a baggage of technical terms. Besides, Dr. Benard avoids the guessing and speculations that characterized some previous references to this goddess. Throughout she employs a direct communication with the reader while soberly basing her conclusions on stated sources.

One welcome feature of Benard’s book is the translation of much material from the Sakta Pramoda. Another fine feature is the treatment of the goddess’s names, both the 108 and 1,000 list. Her classification of the names by the rasas of Hindu drama is probably unique.

This work is a solid contribution to the theories of the Hindu and Buddhist Tantras and their symbolism, in particular as related to the goddess.

    Description:

    From the Book

The Paratrisika (or Paratrimsika) is a short Tantra which has been held in the highest esteem by Kashmir Saivism or Trika. After Somananda, Abhinavagupta has written two commentaries on it, a short one (Laghuvrtti) and an extensive one-the present Vivarana which is presented here for the first time in an English translation. The Paratrisika Vivarana is one of the most fascinating but also most difficult texts of the Kashmir Saiva School, and of the mystical philosophical literature of India as a whole. It deals with Ultimate Reality (anuttara or para) and with the methods of realization, centred above all in the theory and practice of the mantra. Abhinavagupta displays here his great exegetical genius and presents a penetrating metaphysics of language, of the word (vak) and its various stages in relation to consciousness. His language reflects in a luminous fashion the mystical experience contained in this text.

The present translation of Abhinavagupt's masterpiece will not only be a milestone in the study of Kashmir Saivism, but it also makes available one of the major mystical texts of the Indian tradition to readers interested in philosophy and spirituality.

      Description:

The classical Vedic texts that deal with large-scale sacrificial ritual and those writings that deal with domestic ritual have traditionally been treated as unrelated. The former are devoted to the explication of rituals that are dominated by wealthy male elites; the latter concern humble private ceremonies more open to female participation. Reflections on Resemblance, Ritual and Religion argues that there is in fact, a fundamental connection between these two large and important bodies of Indic religious literature.

Siva Sutras: The Yoga of Supreme Identity by Jaideva Singh
Text of the Sutras and the Commentary Vimarsini of Ksemaraja

The Saiva philosophy of Kashmir is generally called Trika Sastra, because it is philosophy of the triad ñ (1) Siva (2) Sakti (3) Nara ñ the bound soul or (1) para ñ the highest (2) parapara ñ identity in difference and (3) apara ñ difference. The literature of the Trika system of Kashmir falls into three categories, viz., (1) the Agama Sastra, (2) the Spanda Sastra and (3) the Pratyabhijna Sastra. Agama Sastra is considered to be revelation by Siva. It lays down both the principles and practices of the system. The most important Agama of the Trika system was known as the Siva Sutras.

Siva Sutras are considered to be a revealed book of the Yoga: supreme identity of the individual self with the Divine. Here and English translation of the Siva Sutras has been provided, together with an abstract of each sutra, throws a flood of light on the entire system of Saiva Yoga. A glossary of technical terms and index are appended for the convenience of the reader.

Four commentaries on Siva Sutras are available at present, the Vimarsini commentary of Ksemaraja in prose, the Siva-sutra-vrtti by some anonymous author in prose, the Siva-sutra-varttikam by Varadaraja in verse.

The Siva-Sutra-vrtti is so close to Vimarsini that it appears to be either a preliminary draft or a later abstract of the Vimarsini. There is a strong presumption that the author of the Vrtti was Ksemaraja himself.

        DESCRIPTION:

The Spandakarikas are a number of verses that serve as a sort of commentary on the Siva-sutras. According to Saivagama, the divine consciousness is not simply cold, inert intellection. It is rather spanda, active, dynamic, throbbing with life, creative pulsation.

In Siva-sutras, it is the prakasa aspect of the divine that is emphasized; in Spandakarikas, it is the vimarsa aspect that is emphasized. Together, these two books give us integral view of Saiva philosophy.

Ksemaraja has written a commentary on Spandakarikas, titled Spanda-nirnaya. He is fond of sesquipedalian compounds, long and windy sentences, but he is very profound in the comprehension of the subject and so cannot be ignored.

The author tried to provide a readable translation of both the karikas and the Spanda-nirnaya commentary. Each karika (verse) is given both in Devanagari and Roman script, followed by its translation in English. This is followed by Ksemaraja's commentary in Sanskrit. Then follows an English translation of the commentary. After this, copious notes are added on important and technical words. Finally, a running exposition of each karika in author's own words is given.

        Description:

Vijnanabhairava is a very ancient book on Yoga. It closely follows the basic principles of
Saivagama. It contains 112 types of Yoga. There is hardly any other book on yoga which has described so many ways of approach to Central Reality that is present in each man as his essential Self. It is both extensive and intensive in the treatment of the subject of yoga.

An English translation of this excellent work is being provided for the first time. The text that
has been adopted is mainly the one that is published in the Kashmir Series of Texts and Studies. At a few places, however, slightly different readings yielding better sense have been
incorporated as suggested by Swami Laksmana Joo.

Each verse of the Sanskrit text has been printed in both Devanagari and Roman script. This is followed by an English translation and a number of expository notes which will go a long way in elucidating the main idea of the verse.

A long Introduction explaining the basic principles of the yogas described in the text has been provided in the beginning. A glossary of technical terms has also been added at the end.

The book has for the first time been translated into English. The translation of each verse is followd by copious expository notes, which contain not only all that is of any value in the Sanskrit commentaries, but also many practical suggestions made by Svami Lakshmana Joo on the basis of his personal experience of these Yogas.

In order to understand the philosophical background of these Yogas, the reader is advised to go through the introductory portion of the author's Pratyabhijnahrdayam or the Siva-sutras.

          DESCRIPTION
Secrets Of Aghora Aghoris are devotees of Shiva manifested as Bhairava are monists who seek moksha from the cycle of reincarnation or samsara. An aghori believes in getting into total darkness by all means, and then getting into light or self realizing. Though this is a different approach from other Hindu sects, they believe it to be effective. They are infamously known for their rituals that include such as shava samskara or shava sadhana to invoke the mother goddess in her form as Smashan Tara. In natural the Aghora sadhana is a process of unlearning deeply internalized cultural models. When this sadhana takes the form of charnel ground sadhana, the Aghori faces death as a very young child, simultaneously meditating on the totality of life at its two extermes. This ideal example serves as a prototype for other Aghor practices, both left and right, in ritual and in daily life.

          Editorial Reviews

Excellent book. Might be a disturbing read to some, but if you're already aware of Aghori practices this book gives you a great insight on the why & how of this way of life. Despite its lengthy details regarding tantrik practices in relation to spirits, the dead, and even sex, what one will take away the most from this book is the whole idea of how the Universe functions. The Aghori whom this book is about must have been a great soul indeed, and wise enough to have this book published after his death considering the questionable nature of spiritualists in today's society. --By SG on 13 March 2016

I had no idea about Aghora or Aghori, but i have seen some crazy naked sadhu''s in documentary of 'Kumbh Mela' a mass Hindu pilgrimage in which Hindus gather to bathe in a sacred river Ganga. I was wondering why they are naked, what kind of rituals they do and there was no answers even after reading top or best selling spiritual books! But as i completed this book, everything was very clear to me. --By Ganesh on 22 June 2016

This book contains aghora wisdoms and left hand tantra. It's a great read. However it may seem disturbing to some because of uncommon and extreme aghora rituals. But Vimalananda has beautifully explained the relevance of each ritual with red flags of caution for curious aspirants at appropriate places. --By varun on 25 April 2014

          Description:

Shri Nisargadatta Maharaj was one of the most significant spiritual teachers of Non-Duality of his time. His powerful non-dual teachings continue to impact spiritual seekers from all over the world, decades after his passing. Maharaj spoke in his mother tongue, Marathi, and a translator would then translate his words into English. It goes without saying that the translator had to be finely tuned not only to Maharaj’s teachings but also to the subtle nuances of his language, his singular vocabulary of spiritual terms and his distinctive teaching idiom. Those who had the good fortune of being in Maharaj’s presence reiterate that the intensity of his teaching was at its peak in the last five years before he shed his body. In those years, a relatively young disciple, ShriDinkarKshirsagar, sat at Maharaj’ssatsangs with a notebook. Every time Maharaj said something which impacted him – it could be a sentence or an entire chunk of conversation – Dinkar-ji would jot it down faithfully, making note of the exact Marathi words used by Maharaj. Though he did not jot down every single word spoken by Maharaj during satsang, his meticulous unfiltered ‘excerpts’ comprised the very essence of the Living Teaching manifesting through Maharaj. They accurately reflected Maharaj’s intensity, his steadfast rootedness in the Self and his utterly natural, intention-less compassion for the spiritual seeker. These talks were first published in Marathi in a book titled Atmaprem. They were subsequently translated into English by Shri Mohan Gaitonde, Maharaj’s ‘evening’ translator, who had the privilege of being with him from 1979 to 1981. This translation is made special by one outstanding fact: years of intuitively translating Maharaj, and that too in his presence, bestowed upon Gaitonde-ji an invaluable gift – an ‘ear’ for Maharaj’s voice and tone. In other words, for his subtlest nuance. For spiritual seekers, keen on accessing Maharaj’s original teachings, this has indeed turned out to be a wonderful gift.

Apart from ritual commodities, mantras and its chanting, yantras or mandalas play a special and important role in ritual ceremony. It is considered that if mantras are devatas (deities) then yantras are the abode of them. Without yantras, the ritual of deities remains incomplete.
In order to attain perfection in worship, it is suggested that puja with yantras of their related deities is more beneficial.
This book comprises of yantras used for all major gods, goddesses and deities accomplished with meaningful colour and geometrical composition.

                From the Jacket:

This book is a translation and study of the poems of ninth century woman saint and mystic. The introduction is designed to make the translations accessible to a non-specialist audience, while the Notes provide insights into the poems and useful explications of allusions and convention with which readers who do not possess a specialized knowledge of Tamil Vaisnava bhakti may be familiar.

"I liked the clear and idiomatic translation. Dehejia introduces the reader to a world of religious experience that is little known. In doing so, she recapture Antal's very personal appropriation of the world of Hindu Vaisnava myth. This book will make an important contribution towards widening out knowledge of women mystics."

Paul E. Muller-Ortega, Department of Religious Studies, Michigan State University. "As an aesthetically successful English translation of an important but hitherto neglected Tamil Bhakti text, this book represents a major contribution to the study of south Indian Hinduism. The text translated in exemplary of an important variety of religious experience in Hinduism which is prominent in many regions of India. It is therefore significant both in terms of the study of Tamil Hinduism and from a broader pan-regional perspective." Norman Cutler, Department of South Asian Languages and Civilizations, The University of Chicago.

                Description

The Devi Bhagavatam, also known as the Devi Bhagavata Purana, ‘the old book of the goddess’, is an integral part of ancient Indian mythology. It is important for the Shakta sect of Hinduism, which describes the Devi as the foundation of the world and equivalent in stature to Brahman, the supreme being.

The original text was written in Bengali and consists of 318 chapters and 18,000 verses, all praising the Devi as supreme and describing instructions for her worship, including temples and rituals such as the annual ritual of Durga Puja which is celebrated all over India, especially in Bengal. The Devi, the mother of the Universe, is worshipped in India in her many forms as Goddess Durga, Kali, Shakti and Saraswati, to name a few.

Menon’s Devi : The Devi Bhagavatam Retold, is a condensed version of The Devi Bhagavatam and describes the legends of the Goddess in all her forms and interpretations. The books opens with the birth of Ved Vyasa, who is also regarded as the author of the Mahabharata and narrates poignant instances from his relationship with his son Suka, such as the dialogue between them over the decision to enter Grihastashrama. Also described is the incarnation of the Devi as Goddess Durga and the epic tale of her destruction of the evil demons Rakthabija and Mahishasura. The tale depicting the origin of the holy Indian rivers, Ganga, Padma and Saraswati, is one of the many rich stories connected to our ancient origins, woven into the tapestry of this literary piece on Indian mythology.

He seemed impatient with me, And now even The song of the nightingale seems shrill.' An erotic narrative poem that explores desire and jealousy, love experienced and love lost, Radhika Santawanam is the most recognized work of nineteenth-century poet and courtesan Muddupalani. Celebrated as a literary masterpiece in Muddupalani's lifetime, Radhika Santawanam was banned by the British in 1910 when it was published again, a century and a half later, with critics panning its graphic descriptions of lovemaking. And, after another hundred years, this epic is now available in its entirety for the first time in English translation.

One of the only collections of Vachana poetry in translation—a must read for all poetry lovers. Here I come, a ferryman without a body To the great flowing river. If you pay the price– Your mind That grasps and lets go, I shall take you across” Vachana poetry in Kannada literature attained its zenith in the twelfth century. Passionate, intensely personal, and ahead of their times, these free-verse poems speak eloquently of the futility of formal learning, the vanity of wealth and the evils of social divisions. The vachanas stress on the worship of Shiva, through love, labour and devotion, as the only worthwhile life-goal for the vachanakara—the vachana poet. This collection offers a selection of vachanas composed by a wide range of vachanakaras from different walks of life writing during that period. While some of these poets are well known even today, most have been forgotten. Translated fluidly and with great skill by H.S. Shivaprakash, I Keep Vigil of Rudra is not only an important addition to Vachana literature, but also a must read for lovers of poetry everywhere.

                  Description:

The subhashita verse is a popular feature of Sanskrit literature. Composed in isolation or as part of a larger work, it is essentially a miniature poem which encapsulates a complete thought, mood or image in a single stanza. These verse epigrams have a wide range of themes. This selection from the Subhashitavali, a celebrated verse anthology compiled by Vallabhadeva in c. fifteenth-century Kashmir, offers a rich variety of erotic poetry and a wealth of lyrical and gnomic verse. One section is given to earthy humour and cynical satire seldom available in English renditions. Also included are invocations and allegories, panegyrics and pen-pictures, sage observations and stark musings. The sweep of these verses is matched by the eclectic array of contributors from illustrious poets like Vyasa and Valmiki, Kalidasa and Bana to others now mostly forgotten. These verses of jollity and wit, ribaldry and bawdiness, snide sarcasm and wry comment showcase the fact that Sanskrit literature, generally perceived as staid and serious, can also be flippant and fun.

The stories here, each self-contained, are spread over the eight decades that have elapsed since Sai Baba's passing away. They are based on the actual experiences of Baba's non-corporeal grace regardless of the religion or region of the recipient. The reader will find the volume absorbing both as a collection of short stories and as a portrayal of experiences relating to Baba from the point of view of one person or another.
