End of the Demon King - Pata Painting

In this spectacular Patachitra painting, Bhakta Prahlad looks on as Narasimha kills Hiranyakashipu. Narasimha, the half-human, half-lion incarnation of Lord Vishnu, provides a very fascinating study of the Lord's incarnation in order to lessen the sufferings of his devotees. Sage Kashyap had four wives, Diti, Aditi, Vinita and Kudroo. From Diti was born demons and Aditi gave birth to gods, while from Vinita was born Garud, the carrier of Vishnu and the last one Kudroo created the hydras. Diti gave birth to Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashipu. Lord Vishnu had to kill Hiranyaksha as he wrought havoc on the gods. Following this Hiranyakashipu bore a strong hatred for Lord Vishnu and Vishnu's very name was like poison to him. His blood was boiling with the hatred of Vishnu.

Hiranyakashipu went to the mountain Mandara and began the severe order of penance and could successfully invoke Lord Brahma. From Lord Brahma he received a unique boon: He could be killed neither by any creature created by Brahma; either in the house nor outside it; neither either during the daytime nor at night; no weapon could cause his death and he should not die either on land or in the sky.

Armed with such a boon, the demon crossed all limits and wrought havoc on heaven and earth. He even dethroned Indra, the king of heavens.

However, Hiranyakashipu's son Prahalad was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu right from his very childhood. Prahalad had not pay any attention to the orders of his father not to worship Vishnu. Hiranyakashipu is father tried to kill his son in a fit of anger. But all his attempts were foiled by Prahlad's saviour Lord Vishnu.

At last Hiranyakashipu thundered at Prahlad and asked him who was his protector. Prahalad replied: "It was Hari who gave me this courage.

He shouted in rage: Show me where is he Prahlad replied: He is everywhere. The king could no longer control his anger. He hit a pillar with his mace. Is he here? He asked Prahlad. He drew out his sword and pounced upon the little boy. A terrible deafening sound came and as the stunned men watched, the pillar split into two and was born the Sri Hari, in the form of Narasimha with a head of a lion and the body of a man. .

Narasimha, ultimately killed Hiranyakashipu and saved the world.

                                          DESCRIPTION:

Energy is an indispensable resource that is required to run the economy and sustain the well being of people. The rapidly developing economies of Third World countries like China and India need to generate increasing amounts of energy as they grow. However, the situation has become complicated after discovery of the functional linkages between CO2 emission from fossil fuels like coal and petroleum. Hence, there is a global search for carbon free energy technology. Generation of energy is both a technological issue as well as a social commitment. The author has addressed these issues covering all major methods of energy generation. He believes that without social support, the technologists cannot derive effective gains from their discoveries. While dealing with each type of technology for generation, the reciprocity between theory and social response has been maintained throughout the book.

                                          • Presents detailed discussion both on the conventional non-renewable sources, as well as on renewable sources of energy

English Literature: Its History and Its Significance for the Life of the English-Speaking World is an all-encompassing study of English literature from Anglo-Saxon times to the twentieth century. It interprets literature both biographically and historically by showing how each work reflects not just the writer’s life and thoughts but also the spirit of the age and the nation’s history. It also shows the development of the English literary canon in terms of complexity, from the earlier simple moral allegories to the complex issues addressed in twentieth-century writings. Along with works of literature, this book also analyses important events and social conditions in each period, the lives of important authors, as well as literary epochs. With helpful summaries, bibliographies and tables of chronological events, this book is the best possible guide for students to understand the vast pantheon of English literature.

Patanjali is the propounder of Yoga sutras. Often Patanjali is identified with primordial Vishnu, or the early stage of Vishnu. He is also known as the Adishesha, the incarnation of serpents that provided recreant resting place for Lord Vishnu. Patanjali's feet are often shown as coiled serpents. In Hindu mythology Adishesha, sometimes also known as "Ananta" (The Endless One), is the thousand-headed ruler of the Nagas, the serpent race that is thought to guard the hidden treasures of the earth. Since yogic knowledge is the ultimate the secret treasure, many yogins still bow to Adishesha before beginning their daily yoga practice. "Salutation to the king of the Nagas, to the infinite, to the bearer of the mandala, who spreads out this universe with thousands of hooded heads, set with blazing, effulgent jewels."

Most spiritual seekers have no real idea of what exactly it is that they are seeking -- even after having spent years chasing the chimera of Enlightenment.

It stands to reason that if you want something desperately you would take great pains to find out what it did for those who have ‘got’ it. So if you desire Enlightenment, it would make abundant sense to at least check out what the ‘Enlightened’ ones have to say about the state of self-realization. That is what Enlightened Living does for you.

In this book Ramesh Balsekar, arguably the most renowned exponent of the ancient philosophy of Advaita today and the author of 30 well-known books, presents you a clear perspective on the self-realized state, in his hallmark lucid style.

If you have believed the sage to be a glorified vegetable, passionless and neutered to all pleasure and all pain, if you have believed that he is in a never-ending state of cocooned bliss or if you have believed that there is some-‘one’ out there to enjoy that ‘blissful’ state, this book shows you just how mistaken you are.

To make its point, Enlightened Living presents an impressive array of Masters -- from Adi Shankara to Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, from Ashtavakra to Ramana Maharshi, from Jnaneshwara to Nisargadatta Maharaj and Sengtsan -- to share with you, in the simplest terms possible, the reality of the state of self-realization. Pointers are used, insights are bestowed and cobwebs vigorously dusted away till what you are left with is a deeply satisfying clarity -- which may or may not be intellectual.
