Description

Once, when Markandeya was in his Ashrama on the banks of the river Pushpabhadra he saw that a strong gale was blowing and this was followed by a fierce storm Before many moments had passed he saw that the earth was covered with water He realized that The Great Deluge had come.

Markandeya was floating on the turbulent sea which carried him away from his Ashrama. He knew not that this was Vishnumaya which he had been wanting to see.

All on a Sudden he saw a Nyagrodha trees which was standing firm in the midst of the waves a branch of the tree could be seen pointing toward the direction Ishanya There on a leaf he saw a lovely child which was dispelling the darkness around with its glow. Green like a newly broken piece of an emerald mountain with the red flowers of the pomegranate adorning its ears the child had raised his foot to his lips. It was sucking its toe with a beatific smile on its face.

Markandeya was swept near and was and sucked into the body of the child along with its breath inside. When he opened his eyes. Markandeya saw the Universe The small child small enough to lie on an Ashwantha leaf held inside it the entire Universe Yashoda was also granted this vision when Krishna opened his month. This was the vision of Markandeya.

Description

Foreword

As we know, Gita Press is committed to publish literature that is helpful in exhilarating morality, building national character and inculcating fervour for developing devotion to the universe. For this purpose, Gita press has in its agenda, the publication of puranic literature, rare books on religious subjects, Upanisads, Gita, Ramayana and Mahabharata etc. Under this process Gita Press published the Asvamedhika Parva of Mahabharata composed by Maharsi Jaimini, a great scholar, poet, philosopher and also astrologer. His book on astrology is regarded as a mature composition on the subject.

It is said that Maharsi Jaimini composed also Mahabharata- much bigger in comparison to Mahabharata composed by Krsnadvaipayana vyasa. But the current of time swallowed most of it and now remains only Asvamedhika parva which gives a vivid description of Asvamedha Yajna performed by Yudhisthira. There are three thousand Slokas in the Asvamedha parva of Mahabharata composed by Vyasadeva and four thousand Slokas are there in the Asvamedhika Parva of Jaiminiya Mahabharata. It may give an idea how voluminous the complete Jaiminiya Mahabharata must have been.

A few years before it was a rare book. For the first time Gita Press published it in monthly 'Kalyan' in a serial form and afterwards in a book form with original Sanskrit text and Hindi translation. Now it has been decided to present an English translation with original Sanskrit text for the benefit of non-Hindi readers of the country and also abroad.
From the point of story telling it starts with presenting Yudhisthira quite aggrieved on account of the sin he committed in the form of mass massacre in the war. He seriously thinks to abandon the kingship and go to the forest for practicing penance. Vyasa ap

DESCRIPTION:

From the Jacket,

This first volume of the Bhagavat-sandarbha includes the first 60 Anucchedas of the work. First, there is discussion of how the Absolute Truth is manifested in three features; as Brahman, Paramatma, and Bhagavan. Next is a discussion of the various potencies of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, including the potency that manifests the living entities.

It is proven beyond doubt that the Supreme Lord is always the absolute controller of all His potencies, and that there is no question of Him coming under their control, especially under the control of the external energy, known as maya.

In the Sri Caitanya-caritamrta, Madhya-lila, chapter one, Srila Krsnadasa Kaviraja Gosvami writes: Sri Rupa Gosvami's newphew, Srila Jiva Gosvami, has compiled so many books on devotional service that there is no counting them. In Sri Bhagavata-sandarbha, Srila Jiva Gosvami has written conclusively about the ultimate end of devotional service.

Back of the Book

In his purport, Srila Prabhupada wrote: The Bhagavata-sandarbha is also known as the Sat-sandarbha. In the first part, called Tattva-sandarbha, it is proved that Srimad-Bhagavatam is the most authoritative evidence directly pointing to the Absolute Truth. The second Sandarbha, called Bhagavat-sandarbha, draws a distinction between impersonal Brahman and localized Paramatma and describes the spiritual world and the domination of the mode of goodness devoid of contamination by the other two material modes. In other words, there is a vivid description of the transcendental position known as suddha-sattva.

DESCRIPTION:
From the Jacket

This second volume of the Bhagavat-sandarbha includes the Anucchedas beginning with sixty-one. This volume begins with a discussion of the nature of the spiritual world, which is declared to be non-different from the Supreme Personality of Godhead, being a manifestation of His personal potency. Any comparison of the spiritual world with the material world of our experience is soundly refuted.

Next, the fact that the Vedas solely describe the Supreme Lord is presented. Although materialistic men consider that the Vedas deal with the four purusarthas-dharma, artha, Kama, and moksa-such materialistic goals are simply stepping-stones on the path back home, back to Godhead. Thereafter, it is argued that Brahman and Bhagavan and not at all two separate entities, but are factually different aspects of the one Absolute Truth.

In the Sri Caitanya-caritamrta, Madhya-lila, chapter one, Srila Krsnadasa Kaviraja Gosvami writes: Sri Rupa Gosvami's has compiled so many books on devotional service that there is no counting them. DESCRIPTION:

This book contains thirty-two excerpts from lectures on Srimad-Bhagavatam given by Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, who was the founder of Sri Caitanya Math and its branches, the Gaudiya Maths. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura was the most prominent preacher of Lord Caitanya's teachings in the early 20th century because he expertly refuted all false conclusions that came in the way of the philosophy established by Sri Rupa Gosvami. For Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, Srimad-Bhagavatam was the original and primary evidence for establishing all conclusive truths. He endorsed Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's philosophy, which had been accepted and preached by the six Gosvamis of Vrndavana. These explanations of Srimad-Bhagavatam were published in the weekly Gaudiya magazine during Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura's time. Later on, they were republished in the monthly Gaudiya magazine in 1964-65. Now, they have appeared in the form of this book. We hope that the readers will relish the preaching of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura found in this book and thus more firmly establish their convictions in Krishna consciousness.

DESCRIPTION:

The Bhagavadgita, or 'Sacred Song', holds an assured place among the world's great scriptures. In fourteen hundred lines of verse, the relationship of man with God - and the intense joy of divine love - are celebrated, in a language that is precise and beautiful. The Gita is a tale of action, taking the form of a dialogue between Arjuna and Krishna on the eve of a battle. Krishna teaches the fearful Arjuna the need for action and the requirement that he - like all mankind - take his place in the world in love and faith. Only through the search for God and the Absolute will the true self be discovered.

This edition of the Bhagavadgita offers the Sanskrit text as well as Radhakrishnan's English translation and a commentary that has become a classic. His clear understanding of the profound wisdom contained within the Gita ensures an equally clear vision of its powerful and eternal message, one that cannot fail to touch the minds and spirits of all those who reach for it.

About the Author

Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, (Telugu: September 1888 17 April 1975) was an Indian philosopher and statesman. He was the first Vice-President of India (1952 1962) and subsequently the second President of India (1962 1967). One of India's most
influential scholars of comparative religion and philosophy, Radhakrishnan is thought of as having built a bridge between the East and the West by showing that the philosophical systems of each tradition are comprehensible within the terms of
the other. He wrote authoritative exegeses of India's religious and philosophical literature for the English speaking world. His academic appointments included the King George V Chair of Mental and Moral Science at the University of Calcutta
(1921 ?) and Spalding Professor of Eastern Religion and Ethics at Oxford University (1936 1952). Among the many honours he received were a knighthood (1931), the Bharat Ratna (1954) and the Order of Merit in 1963. His birthday is celebrated in India as Teacher's Day on 5 September.

DESCRIPTION:
The Bhagwat Gita is the main sourcebook on yoga and is a concise summary of India's Vedic wisdom. Yet, remarkably, the setting for this classic spiritual text is an ancient Indian battlefield.

In this interpretation of the Gita, the author explains that the essence of the Gita is the equanimity of mind, which is attained by transcending it because mind consciousness is myopic and only spiritual consciousness abounds in universal love and absolute knowledge.

This best-selling and expanded edition of the most famous and popular of Indian scriptures contextualizes the book culturally and historically and explains the key concepts of Hindu religious thought and the technical vocabulary of yoga. Chapter introductions, notes and a glossary help readers understand the book's message better. Most importantly, the translation uses simple, clear language to impart the poetry, universality and timelessness of the Gita's teachings.

DESCRIPTION:
Among the priceless teachings that may be found in the great Hindu poem of the Mahabharata, there is none so rare and and precious as this, 'The Lord's Song'. Since it fell from the divine lips of Shri Krishna on the field of battle and stilled the surging emotions of his disciple and friend, how many troubled hearts has it quieted and
strengthened, how many weary souls has it led to Him! It is meant to lift the aspirant from the lower levels of renunciation, where objects are renounced, to the loftier heights where desires are dead, and where the Yogi dwells in calm and ceaseless contemplation, while his body and mind are actively employed in discharging the
duties that fall to his lot in life.

That the spiritual man need not be a recluse, that union with the divine Life may be achieved and maintained in the midst of worldly affairs, that the obstacles to the union lie not outside us but within us-such is the central lesson of the BHAGAVADGITA

Annie Besant in the preface to the book.

DESCRIPTION:
A Guide to Navigating the Battle of Life “O Dhananjaya, do your work established in yoga and abandon attachment. Be impartial to success or failure, for yoga is equanimity.” —The Bhagavad Gita Myths offer truths that speak about the human condition and have withstood the test of time. The Mahabharata is one such magnificent saga and the Bhagavad Gita is the nectar of its distilled wisdom. The great Indian gurus and philosophers have looked at the battle of Kurukshetra as a euphemism for the struggle within – between a person’s asuric (demonic) and daivic (divine) inclinations. Eons later, the Gita is still relevant and popular. Is it because we are still fascinated about an ancient war and a philosophical discourse that happened in the middle of a battlefield a long time ago, or because we are concerned about understanding the constant tussle between good and bad in our lives and in our own consciousness? Ravi Ravindra’s fresh prose translation of the great epic stands out from the many other versions with its assertion that the Gita is, at its heart, an indispensable universal guide to help you cross the battlefield of life. Ravi Ravindra, PhD, is Professor Emeritus at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he served for many years as a professor in comparative religion, philosophy and physics. He is the author of numerous books including Science and the Sacred, The Wisdom of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras and The Pilgrim Soul.

Bhagavan would quote and comment on the Bhagavad Gita when speaking to devotees. Among the many references to the Gita in the Ashram literature, the following is characteristic of Bhagavan's insight in to this great scripture.

The Bhagavad Gita is an episode in one of India's two great epic poems, the Mahabharata. This is a vast work, many times longer than the Homeric poems. It contains a wealth of mythology and much religious and ethical teaching but is mainly centred around the quarrel between the Pandavas and Kauravas culminating in the battle of Kurukshetra. The book has Sanskrit Text,English Transliteration and English Translation.

About the Author

Arthur Osborne (1906 1970) was an English writer on spirituality and mysticism, and an influential disciple and biographer of Ramana Maharshi. When one of Osborne's books, Ramana Maharshi and The Path of Self Knowledge, was first published in 1954, it contained a foreword from Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, at that time vice president of India.[1] From 1964, Osborne served as the founding editor of Mountain Path, a journal published by Ramanasramam, the ashram founded by the devotees of Ramana Maharshi. Osborne has also been a biographer of Shirdi Sai Baba, another saint-fakir, who lived a humble life in a masjid at Shirdi. During his life time Ramana Maharshi directed several disciples to go to Shirdi as Sai Baba was their guru. Prominent among them was B.V.Narasimha Swami who was also a biographer of Ramana Maharshi and spent a considerable time at Ramana Ashram at the lotus feet of Ramana Maharshi. .

        Description:

Although Pandu’s son Arjuna was widely known as one who in combat could single-handedly fight and defeat 1,000 opposing warriors simultaneously, he was twice traumatized and brought to his knees on the battlefield of  Kurukshetra. The first time was upon seeing countless loved ones eager for bloodshed on both sides of the impending fray. The second was upon discovering that his own charioteer, a bosom friend since adolescence, could not only speak about the experience of awakening to one’s true nature, but could also provide the experience of beholding the infinite form of the one universal Self. Gitavali Vol.3 -Complete Works of Goswami Tulsidas
Gitavali Vol.3 -Complete Works of Goswami Tulsidas

Gitavali is of special significance to a devotee of Lord Rama. The Lord declared both in Ramacharitmanasa (VII.46) and in Srimad Bhagavadgita (IX.14) that by chanting His Glories one attains His Divine Bliss. Tulsi sings of the glory of the Saguna Form of Rama in highest ecstasy. He depicts the entire Creation: birds, beasts, Blossoms, trees, skies, clouds, fragrant breezes, day, night, Sun, Moon and stars paying obeisance to Rama, the Incarnated Lord of the Universe. Tulsi's love for Ayodhya is apparent in Gitavali. He sings of many events from the Deeds of Rama pertaining to Ayodhya. His songs of Holi, Diwali and jhoola (swing) festivals are unique.

          Description:

Abhinavagupta, undoubtedly the greatest genius of India in the fields of philosophy, aesthetics, poetics, dramaturgy, Tantra and mysticism, is being rediscovered only in the last few decades. Although several scholars, in India and abroad, are engaged in studying his works, it is surprising that there are still few translations available.
Abhinavagupta explains in his commentary that he undertook this work because he felt that his predecessors when commenting on the Bhagavad-Gita had not understood its secret or esoteric meanings. With the main purpose to explain these esoteric meanings, Abhinavagupta elaborates the secret doctrine of the purification of the sense-organs through the alternation of enjoyment of worldly objects and deep meditation. He claims that the continuous exchange of two contradictory experiences, i.e. gratification of the senses which brings satisfaction and samadhi in which sense-organs are reduced to one’s own atman, quickly brings the highest good.
The great merit of the present translation of Abhinavagupta’s “summary of the (real and secret) meaning of the Bhagavad-Gita” lies in the following: First, it includes the text and translation of the Kashmiri version of the Bhagavad-Gita, which in places differs from the one commented upon by Shankara (there are fifteen additional verses, and many verses partially differ from the verses found in other recensions). Besides, it brings out the specific meanings in the context of Kashmir Shaiva philosophy and yoga, without being influenced by Samkhya or Vedanta. The translation and explanatory notes show a deep understanding of Kashmir Shaiva metaphysics and yoga.
The present work will fulfil an important role by presenting a different version of the Bhagavad-Gita in the light of Kashmir Shaivism. It will also be inspiring for anyone interested in the practice of the secret yoga of the Gita.

          Discription:

Among the priceless teachings that may be found in the great Hindu poem of the Mahabharata, there is none so rare and precious as this, 'The Lord's Song'. Since it fell from the divine lips of Shri Krishna on the field of battle and stilled the surging emotions of his disciple and friend, how many troubled hearts has it quieted and strengthened, how many weary souls has it led to Him! It is meant to lift the aspirant from the lower levels of renunciation, where objects are renounced, to the loftier heights where desires are dead and where the Yogi dwells in calm and ceaseless contemplation, while his body and mind are actively employed in discharging the duties that fall to his lot in life. That the spiritual man need not be a recluse, that union with the divine Life may be achieved and maintained in the midst of worldly affairs, that the obstacles to that union lie not outside us but within us - such is the central lesson of the Bhagavad-Gita.

But, as all the acts of an Avatara are symbolical, we may pass from the outer to the inner planes and see in the fight of Kurukshetra the battlefield of the soul, and, in the sons of Dhritarashtra, enemies it meets in its progress Arjuna becomes the type of the struggling soul of the disciple and Shri Krishna is the Logos of the soul. Thus the teaching of the ancient battlefield gives guidance in all later days and trains the aspiring soul in treading the steep and thorny path that leads to peace. To all such souls in East and West come these divine lessons, for the path is one, though it has many names and all souls seek the same goal, though they many not realize their unity.
