About Kalamkari Paintings
Kalamakri is an unique form of hand painting on cotton cloth. The word Kalamkari is derived from the Persian words Kalam means 'pen' and kari means 'work'. The kalam or pen is used for free hand drawings; the majority of topics are religious related to Indian Gods and great Hindu Epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata etc. The themes are carefully chosen and often depicting in narrative manner, powerful use of line drawings and natural colors is the specialty of these paintings, Srikalahasti and Machilipatnam are the two famous towns in South India where the Kalmkari works are produced in majority, while preparing a painting the cotton fabric gets its glossiness by immersing it for an hour in a mixture of resin & cow milk. The contours of chosen subject is drawn with a point in bamboo soaked in a mixture of jagri fermented & water; after its application the vegetable dyes are applied. After applying each color, the Kalamkari is washed. Thus, each fabric undergoes through at least 3-4 washings. Various effects are obtained by using cow dung, seeds, plants, crushed flowers, rusted iron, indigo etc. Now days the kalamakari has spread its wings from wall paintings to other products such as Stoles & Scarves, Bags, Dupattas, Cushions & Throws, Table, Decor, and Stationary.
