Description

The beautiful brass figure of Dhanvantari, the father of Ayurveda, is given a refine and minute treatment with some nice carvings on it. The tall and standing figure of the Lord reveals a deep sense of accomplishment and gracefulness. Dhanvantari first appeared during the great churning of the cosmic milk ocean to deliver amrta (nectar) for the nourishment of the demigods. Lord Dhanvantari was "dressed in yellow garments and wore brightly polished earrings made of pearl. The tips of His hair were anointed with oil and His chest was very broad. His body had all good features, and He was stout and strong as a lion. In His hand, He carried a jug of nectar." The demons stole the jug of nectar and Lord Vishnu appeared as Mohini, a beautiful woman, who fascinated the demons and recovered the nectar from them. Dhanvantari’s second Appearance ccurred at the beginning of the reign of the current Manu in the second Dvapara-yuga . Lord Vishnu foretold at the time of the churning that Dhanvantari would appear again in the human society and be worshipped by human beings. He would also teach them the science of Ayurveda. Dhanvantari at that time was residing in the heavens and Lord Indra seeing the misery of human beings afflicted by disease on earth, requested the Lord to teach Ayurveda to the human race.

Feast: With a Taste of Amir Khusro
Feast: With a Taste of Amir Khusro
Description

‘Stories and food remain the same, only faces change, and those too only vaguely. The same faces keep coming back every few generations to eat the same food and live out the same stories.’

Ayesha realizes that her relationship with food has made her obese and this realization takes her on a journey of self-discovery where she learns to fall in love with food not through gluttony, but by understanding its sensuous journey and evolution. In her life, feast runs parallel to the tales of people, and sometimes becomes the cerebral voice relating its journey over time and regions, telling stories of the people to whom it provides nourishment and nurturing.

Travelling in time, Ayesha and Feast present scenarios of hospitality, generosity and warmth of the people of the subcontinent; through seasons, traditions and celebrations. Soon Ayesha comes to appreciate how food brings with it interesting stories, tying various emotions together—celebratory, jubilant, sorrowful and the ordinary. The history of regional cuisine, the multitude of tastes and flavours, and the passions they evoke, have a deep impact on Ayesha. She eventually comes to understand that her primary relationship is with food, and until that is not healthy, nothing else will be.

Away from Ayesha’s voice, Tirmizi’s account is often omniscient, telling tales of a different time, stepping into another past, and then jumping to the present, voicing the evolution of food and its impact on Ayesha, and the relationships she has with others.

Additionally, mouth-watering recipes of traditional dishes from the subcontinent make for a delightful read. In Tirmizi’s deft hands, Feast is as a feast should be: endearing and unputdownable.

Feng Shui FrogsFeng Shui Frogs
Feng Shui Frogs
This polyresin figure of Feng shui frogs is nicely crafted. This is a good luck frog and it appears during the season of spring when the weather starts to get warmer and have traditionally been associated with new beginnings. In China the frog is a symbol of good luck and they speak of the frog on the moon, whereas people from the Western world will speak of the man on the moon. In Ancient China images of frogs were found on the drums used to summon thunder and much need rain. However, according to Feng Shui rule, the frog never should be placed in a well. A frog in a well is a symbol of ignorance. Frogs are associated with prosperity because they are found near water and we are all in desperate need of water to survive.
