The beautiful Kalamkari painting depicts goddess Durga in a most accomplished and fitting manner. Goddess Durga was created out of the combined forces and energies of all the gods and goddesses to kill the demon Mahishashur who wrought havoc on Earth and Heaven. She is one of the most popular goddesses in Hindusim and is widely worshipped in the Eastern part of the country (like Bengal, Orissa and Assam). For the Bengali community the Autumn season holds tremendous importance as it is the period when the Durga Puja is celebrated with enthusiasm and gusto.

Description
In this Madhubani painting, Goddess Durga is given a local thrust by the painters of Madhuban, Bihar. Handmade paper treated with cow dung is used by the local painters who are mainly males. The Goddess is standing on a lion. Colour patterns are exquisitely used. Madhubani is a popular hand-made painting in the Mithila region of Bihar where women draw paintings of nature, or mythological figures on handmade papers or cloths. Natural colours are delicately used on cotton. This genre of painting is marked by line drawings filled in by bright colours and contrasts or patterns. Though traditionally done by the women of the region, nowadays men are also involved in the process of painting. These are basically tribal art which are marked by the application of strong earthly colours. Madhubani paintings are done with mineral pigments prepared by the artists. The work is done on freshly plastered or a mud wall. But nowadays, to cater to the growing commercial demand, such paintings are also done on paper, cloth and canvas as well.

Description
Mother goddess Durga is depicted here as a warrior woman riding a lion with multiple hands carrying weapons and assuming symbolic hand gestures. She is portrayed here as the embodiment of feminine and creative energy (Shakti). Durga was the creation out of the combined energies of all the gods and goddesses to kill the demon Mahishasur. Her form was blindingly beautiful with 3 lotus-like, blood-bordered eyes, ten powerful hands, hair in the form of black pearls, golden glow from her skin. Her face was sculpted by Shiva, torso by Indra, breasts by Chandra (the moon), teeth by Brahma, bottom by the Earth, thighs and knees by Varuna (wind), and her three eyes by Agni (fire). Each god also gave her their own most powerful weapons, Rudra's trident, Vishnu's discus, Indra's thunderbolt, Brahma's kamandal, Kuber's gada etc. Himalayas gifted her a fierce white tiger. On the end of the 8th & beginning of the 9th day of waxing moon, Chanda and Munda came to fight the goddess. Her form was the most powerful one with 3 red eyes, blood-filled toungue and dark skin; who finally killed the twin demons with her sword. The figure has been heavily decorated with the goddess and the roaring lion being given equal treatment.
