The spectacular Kalamkari painting of Lord Shiva, one of the Trinity Gods in Hinduism, the two other being Lord Brahma and Vishnu, seated with His wife Uma, is given a nice portrayal. The ornamental effulgence of colours and the characters that emerge on the beautiful painting, help create a resplendent spread. Kalamkari art is unique in its use of colour as a medium to portray mythological characters. As the nome de plume suggests, Kalamkari is the art of painting cotton fabrics with a kalam i.e. pen, a sharp pointed pierced bamboo that regulates flow of colour on the fabric

Description
Lord Shiva Shankar is here in a meditative posture. The figure is nicely treated with a minute touch. One of the Trinity Gods in Hinduism, Lord Shiva is responsible for the destruction of the order. But such a destruction also means a prelude to a fresh beginning. He is also called Neelkanth. According to the scriptures, during churning of the milky ocean, the poison or 'Halahal' also came out of the ocean which terrified the Gods and Demons. It was so toxic that it might have destroyed all of creation. Lord Shiva then came to rescue and swallowed the poison and held it in his throat. Lord Shiva therefore became 'Neelkanth'. The swallowing of poison could have burned the throat but keeping the Moon and the Ganges in the lock of hair soothed Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva is also known as Aashutosh (one fulfilling wishes instantly); Aja (unborn); Akshayaguna (God with limitless attributes); Anagha (without any fault); Anantadrishti (of infinite vision); Augadh (who revels all the time); Avyayaprabhu (imperishable Lord) and Bhairav (Lord Of terror)

An epitome of tremendous force and energy, the female goddess Mahakali is being depicted dancing over the sleeping Shiva. The Goddess is wearing the garlands of human skulls and her black figure and the bulging lip show an element of awe and ferocity. The sleeping Shiva symbolizes ignorance as surrounds our life. Her body is painted black and every part of the body is being given a detail and refine treatment. She represents the darker side of human beings and worshipping her protects us from the evil forces. The painting has some spectacular floral designs on it. There is an interesting story about how Shiva stops Kali from her frenzy. In Kali's most famous myth, Durga and her assistants, the Matrkas, wound the demon Raktabija. But with every blood that is spilt from Raktabija, the demon reproduces a copy of himself. The battlefield becomes increasingly filled with his duplicates. Durga, in dire need of help, summons Kali to combat the demons. Kali destroys Raktabija by suckling the blood from his body and putting the many Raktabija duplicates in her gaping mouth. An overjoyed Kali starts dancing on the battlefield, stepping on the corpses of the slain. Her consort Shiva lies among the dead beneath her feet. Kali, becoming drunk on the blood of her victims on the battlefield, dances with destructive frenzy. In her fury she fails to see the body of her husband Shiva who lies among the corpses on the battlefield. Ultimately the cries of Shiva attract Kali's attention, calming her fury. As a sign of her shame at having disrespected her husband in such a fashion, Kali sticks out her tongue and stops her frenzy.

.Nandi is the bull, which Shiva rides and the gatekeeper of Shiva in Hindu mythology. A statue of Nandi facing the main shrine is seen in most Shiva temples. There are also a number of temples dedicated solely to Nandi. The bull Nandi is Shiva's primary vehicle and is the principal gana (follower) of Shiva. Some Puranas mention that Nandi lead the Siva Ganas, Siva's attendants. In addition to being his mount, Nandi is also Shiva's foremost disciple. According to some Puranas, Nandi was born out of the right side of Vishnu resembling Siva exactly and given as a son to the sage Salankayana. It was Nandi who cursed Ravana (the demon King of Lanka) that his kingdom would be burnt by a monkey (Vanara). And later Hanuman burnt Lanka when he went in search of Sita, who was kept prisoner by Ravana in Ashok Vatika. Once when the Gods (devas), and the demons (asuras), joined together on a rare occasion to churn the ocean with a mountain to obtain the nectar of immortality they utilized Vasuki, the serpent, as the rope. The devas pulled from one end and the asuras from the other. Vasuki was upset during the process of this churning, and vomited up a poison. This "poison" was so dangerous that none of the devas or asuras wanted to go near it. As everyone else ran away, Lord Siva, followed by Nandi, came forward to help, as he was the only one who could counteract this deadly poison. Shiva took the poison into his hand and drank it. Nandi saw some of the poison spill out of Siva's mouth and immediately drank if off the ground. The devas and asuras watching were shocked and wondered aloud what would happen to Nandi. Lord Siva calmed their fears saying, "Nandi has surrendered into me so completely that he has all my powers and my protection".
