The beautiful image of Medicine Buddha is given a royal and detail treatment with the gold paints sparkle like stars. His left hand is in the meditation mudra and holding a begging bowl full of long life nectar in his lap. He gives protection from illness, his right hand is outstretched in the gesture of giving and holds the "great medicine", the myrobalan plant Tibetan medicine recognizes three basic types of illness, the root causes of which are the conflicting emotions -- passion, aggression, and ignorance. Myrobalan is the only herb in the Tibetan pharmacopoeia that can aid in healing each of these three types of diseases. This is like the action of the Buddha of Healing, who has the power to see the true cause of any affliction, whether spiritual, physical or psychological, and who does whatever is necessary to alleviate it. It is believed that mere sight of the Medicine Buddha heals us from all sorts of illness.

A fine Buddha statue. The carved robes of the Buddha feature Stories from his life on his path to becoming the Enlightened One.Here you can see the partial use of silver and copper on some parts of this beautiful sculpture.

Although some aspects of the medieval bhakti movements are known or have been viewed by the historians from their own angles of vision, much remains to be known, understood and interpreted. The present volume, issued on the occasion of the Quincentenary of Mahaprabhu Sri Caitanya, is an attempt to understand a little more of the medieval bhakti movements of India. The contributors to the volume who have enthusiastically agreed to participate in this project are all specialists in their own fields and their valuable papers are expected to throw new light on many hitherto unknown or known features of the great historical movement, the far-reaching consequences of which are very much lively in the heart of the Indian masses even today. The contributors to this volume are Bimanbehari Majumdar, Niharranjan Ray, G.S. Chhabra, Manorama Kohli, G.V. Saroja, J.C. Jain, M.S. Ahluwalia, H.A. Qureshi, Manjula Bhattacharyya, Uma S. Foreword
It is owing to the grace of Mahaprabhu Sri Caitanya that we have been able to bring out the present volume on the occasion of his quincentenary commemoration in our humble capacity. We express our sincere gratitude to the scholars-all eminent in their own fields -who contributed their learned articles to this volume at our request, to the editor who devoted all his time and energy to make the project a grand success, to Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers, New Delhi who came forward to publish the work on our behalf and to those who helped us in many ways. At the same time we place on record our deep sorrow at the death of two of the contri- butors-Prof. Prabhat Mukherjee of Bhuvaneswar and Prof. Sarat Chandra Goswami of Guwahati-and our appreciation of the services rendered by them to the cause of this volume.

The Apostle of Non-Violence and Truth is presented here in a meditative posture. The Lord Buddha gave up the pap of luxury in search of the Truth and after a severe penance he came out with the absolute truth. The ushnisha or knot of hair on top of Buddha’s head is considered a sign of his spiritual wisdom. Lord Buddha is also considered an incarnation of the Hindu God Vishnu.

DESCRIPTION:
Bringing the deep wisdom of the heart into your daily life. Meditation is a systematic technique for training the mind, especially attention and the will, so that we can set forth from the surface level of consciousness and journey into the very depths. With meditation you train your attention, drawing together the scattered threads of what you think, say and do. The Principle of Meditation is simple: You are what you think. By meditating regularly, you find yourself becoming wiser, kinder, with greater sense of purpose and connection to others. This book is a complete guide to a program of meditation developed by Eknath Easwaran. Universal and dogma-free, meditation fits within any religious practice or nonreligious philosophy, it is used by counselors and yoga teachers, as well as health and education professionals. Eknath Easwaran taught meditation to thousands of people for over 40 years, including a course at the University of California. Thoroughly tested, consistent and clear, the instructions in this book are all you need to start meditating. With Easwaran's help, choose words or passages that appeal to you, from one spiritual tradition or many, poetic or intellectual, lofty and inspiring or warmly practical. Keep meditating and your words or passages will become lifelines, taking you to the source of wisdom deep within and then guiding you through the challenges of daily life.
