Description:
In the ancient lexicons of Vedic and classical periods, the influence of ¶gama has been parliamentary and pivotal. NÈ yaveda by seer Bharata is a magnum opus dates back to 5th century B.C. The other important works in musicology such as Brihaddeshi, Abhinavabharati and Sangitaratnakara are from post-Vedic and mediaeval periods, distinguishly composed by the great Saivite polymaths. Thus the streams of ¶gama consciousness and the works of Indian art and poetics went together in the creative evolution of Indian mind. It was obvious to trace and deconstruct the inter-influence in modern cultural mileu. This research work is the outcome.

Editorial Reviews
Excellent book. Might be a disturbing read to some, but if you're already aware of Aghori practices this book gives you a great insight on the why & how of this way of life. Despite its lengthy details regarding tantrik practices in relation to spirits, the dead, and even sex, what one will take away the most from this book is the whole idea of how the Universe functions. The Aghori whom this book is about must have been a great soul indeed, and wise enough to have this book published after his death considering the questionable nature of spiritualists in today's society. --By SG on 13 March 2016
I had no idea about Aghora or Aghori, but i have seen some crazy naked sadhu''s in documentary of 'Kumbh Mela' a mass Hindu pilgrimage in which Hindus gather to bathe in a sacred river Ganga. I was wondering why they are naked, what kind of rituals they do and there was no answers even after reading top or best selling spiritual books! But as i completed this book, everything was very clear to me. --By Ganesh on 22 June 2016
This book contains aghora wisdoms and left hand tantra. It's a great read. However it may seem disturbing to some because of uncommon and extreme aghora rituals. But Vimalananda has beautifully explained the relevance of each ritual with red flags of caution for curious aspirants at appropriate places. --By varun on 25 April 2014
About the Author
Robert E. Svoboda is the only American licensed to practice Ayurvedic medicine in India. A native of Texas, he is the author of eight books on Ayurveda and Indian mythology.

The first volume of Agni: The Vedic Ritual of the Fire Altar contains a discussion of the place of the Agnicayana in the Vedic srauta tradition, its textual loci, traditional and modern interpretations of its origins and significance and an overview of the Nambudiri Vedic tradition. The bulk of the volume, written in close collaboration with C.V. Somayajipad and M. Itti Ravi Nambudiri, is devoted to a detailed description of the 1975 twelve-day performance, richly illustrated with tipped-in photographs, mostly in colour and almost all by Adelaide de Menil. There are numerous text illustrations, tables and maps. The mantras are published in Devanagari and translation.
The second volume, edited with the assistance of Pamela MacFarland, contains contributions by an international galaxy of scholars on archeology, the pre-Vedic Indian background, geometry, ritual vessels, music, Mudras, Mimamsa, a survey of Srauta traditions in recent times, the influence of Vedic ritual in the Homa traditions of Indonesia, Tibet, China, Japan and related topics. There are translations of the relevant Srauta Sutras of Baudhyayana (together with Caland's text) and the Jaiminiya (with Bhavatrata's commentary) as well as the Kausitaki Brahmana; and a survey of the project with an inventory of the films and tape recordings made in 1975.
