ओमप्रकाश वाल्मीकि भारतीय दलित साहित्य के सबसे बड़े हस्ताक्षर हैं। उनकी आत्मकथा, जूठन, जिसमें उन्होंने जातीय अपमान और उत्पीड़न के कई अनछुए सामाजिक पहलुओं पर रोशनी डाली है, दलित साहित्य में मील का पत्थर मानी जाती है। 30 जून 1950 में उत्तर प्रदेश में जन्मे वाल्मीकि ने एम.ए. तक शिक्षा प्राप्त की जिसके दौरान उन्हें आर्थिक, सामाजिक और मानसिक उत्पीड़न झेलना पड़ा। 1993 में उन्हें डा. अम्बेडकर पुरस्कार, 1995 में परिवेश सम्मान और साहित्य भूषण पुरस्कार से अलंकृत किया गया। अपनी दलित अस्मिता के आग्रह के बावजूद ओमप्रकाश वाल्मीकि के लेखन की व्यापक और गहरी चिंताएँ हैं और इसी कारण, देश, धर्म, जाति और विमर्श पर इस पुस्तक में प्रस्तुत उनके विचार आज भी अत्यंत महत्त्वपूर्ण और सामयिक हैं। 2012 में जब वे दिल्ली के गंगाराम अस्पताल में कैंसर का उपचार ले रहे थे तब उनकी देखभाल कर रहे युवा लेखक और दलित साहित्य के शोधार्थी भंवरलाल मीणा ने उनसे लम्बी बातचीत की। इस अंतिम बातचीत में जहाँ अनेक आत्मस्वीकार हैं, वहीं दलित दृष्टि का पुनराविष्कार भी है। यह संवाद इस मायने में अद्वितीय है कि मृत्यु को एकदम नज़दीक से देख रहे लेखक ने जीवन में अपने अनुभवों का अंतिम सार प्रस्तुत कर दिया है। 2013 को ओमप्रकाश वाल्मीकि का देहान्त हो गया। राजस्थान के आदिवासी क्षेत्र में अध्यापन कर रहे भंवरलाल मीणा साहित्य और विमर्श के अध्येता हैं। आदिवासी लोकगीतों पर आपकी एक पुस्तक प्रकाशित हुई है और लघु पत्रिका बनास जन से भी जुड़े हैं।
