Ananda Math - A Literary Classic from Bengal
Ananda Math - A Literary Classic from Bengal
Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay (1838-1894) is considered to be one of the greatest writers in the world of Bengali literature. One of his most popular novels Ananda Math, considered to be a milestone in the history of modern fiction in India, reeived such wide acclaim in the late 19th century that he came to be referred to as the walter scott of India. Translations of this story appeared in Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi and Urdu. This vividly described story depicts the struggle for freedom in 1773 Bengal.

The British stronghold had gripped Bengal. The rural population starved and suffered, struggling to meet the taxes imposed upon thim by thie\eur rulers poverty stricken villages were left in a state of near abandon. In the face of all this misery, one young man named Satyananda yearned for truth, justice and freedom, and left his home to fight for his motherland. Soon, many others followed suit, and this band of patriotic youngsters came to be know as santaans (children).

The novel Ananda Math played an important role in fostering militant nationalism in Bengal I the early 20th century. Emulating the santaans, many young men gave up their homes and families to join secret societies that worked towards freeing India.

The songs Vande Mataram, which Bankim Chandra first wrote in this novel, echoed through the Indian freedom movement, inspiring patriotism and resolve. It was heard on the lips of many as they braved the lathis of the British police.

                            Description

Within Buddhist conceptual framework in general and in the world of Buddhist Scholarship in particular the present work is the first full-scale inquiry into the rationale of the acceptance of two important concepts in Buddhist philosophy, viz. Santana and Santanantara. In the work, the rationale of their acceptance and intricate mode of inter-relationship has been explained in great detail. And it has been argued that their acceptance paves way for (a). philosophically satisfactory account of continuity, transformation and transcendence-no matter in case of isolated or inter-related items, and (b) laying foundation of an alternative philosophical psycho- logy in Buddhist Philosophy. It is argued that these features of them hold even in the face of acceptance of complete discreteness and literal momentariness. Assessing pioneering importance of the works of Dharmakirti like the Santanantara-siddhi on these counts, it has been maintained that such an account of continuity, transformation and transcendence on the one hand and adoption of an alternative philosophical psychology on the other has to be embedded in the conception of the three major pillars of Buddhism viz. Duhkha, Anatmata and Anityata together with complex sort of inter-relationship between them. The work, thus, underscores the unmistakable importance of the three pillars under consideration in general and of Anityata in particular in properly under- standing Buddhist ontology, epistemology, anthropology and psychology along with complex inter-relationship between them. This is, further, sought to be done in such a way that philosophically significant account of continuity, transformation etc. does not fail to be available in the Buddhist conceptual framework.

Ancestors of Rama - Paperback Comic Book
Ancestors of Rama - Paperback Comic Book
According to Indian tradition and belief, Rama was the ideal king and his kingdom of ‘Rama Rajya’ represents the ideal state of governance.kalidasa, in his poem entitled ‘Raghuvamsa’ inspired by Valmiki’s Ramayana, traced the ancestry of Rama, chronicling the dynasty of the lkshwakus. Gandhiji was only reinforcing this firm belief when he named his ideal state ‘Rama Rajya’. Yet the predecessors of Rama, in his dynasty of the lkshwakus, were as valiant and as benign as Rama himself. This story tells of their deeds.

The heroes of epics have their tragic flaws because epics always tell the whole truth. Like Rama, his ancestors also had natural flaws in their characters, which do not diminish the glory of their personalities.

It is interesting to note that the Puranas trace the genealogy of Rama to the Sun or Surya. Some of the illustrious ancestors listed in the genealogy are Manu, lkshwaku, Harischandra, Rohita, Sagara, Bhagiratha, Ambarisha and Rituparna. Brihadbala, who fought in the Mahabharata war, is said to be a descendant of Rama.

                            Ancient Bronzes
                            Ancient Bronzes
                            The Book

It is primarily intended for use to metal conservators, engineers, conservation scientist, metal sculptors, and students striving to acquire some back ground and perspective on this subject. Conservation especially remedial conservation of the ancient bronzes is one of the major challenges of our time for metal conservators. With the advancement of science and technology several new materials have come out time to time. However a random survey indicates that there is hardly a book, which covers from history of bronzes to philosophy and conservation of ancient bronzes including techniques of casting, deterioration, metallography, characterization and identification of elements and compounds of ancient bronzes for understanding the type and level of decay of metals.

This book is expected to be useful not only for the university students, technologists, practicing conservators, metal sculptors, artists and metallurgists but also for all those who are entrusted with responsibilities for conserving the ancient bronzes.

The book gives a detailed development of bronzes in global perspective, metallurgical identities, characterization and identification of elements and compounds, types and factors of corrosion including corrosion mechanism and corrosion products and their colouration. The last section of this book gives the remedial conservation including preventive measures.

Its Impact on the Ancient and Modern Worlds
To understand modern science as a coherent story, it is essential to recognize the accomplishments of the ancient Hindus.
They invented our base-ten number system and zero that are now used globally, carefully mapped the sky and assigned motion to the Earth in their astronomy, developed a sophisticated system of medicine with its mind-body approach known as Ayurveda, mastered metallurgical methods of extraction and purification of metals, including the so-called Damascus blade and the Iron Pillar of New Delhi, and developed the science of self-improvement that is popularly known as yoga. In the modern era, thinkers and scientists as diverse as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Johann Gottfried Herder, Carl Jung, Max Müller, Robert Oppenheimer, Erwin Schrödinger, Arthur Schopenhauer, and Henry David Thoreau have acknowledged their debt to ancient Hindu achievements in science, technology, and philosophy.
Ancient Hindu Science is well documented with remarkable objectivity, proper citations, and a substantial bibliography. It highlights the achievements of this remarkable civilization through painstaking research of historical and scientific sources. The style of writing is lucid and elegant, making the book easy to read. This book is perfect for all students and others interested in the developments of science throughout history and among the ancient Hindus, in particular.

The work is divided into three broad divisions of the natural course of cultural development in Ancient India: (1) From the prehistoric age to 600 B.C., (2) From 600 B.C. to 300 A.D., (3) From 300 A.D. to 1200 A.D.The work describes the political, economic, religious and cultural conditions of the country, the expansionist activities, the colonisation schemes of her rulers in the Far East. Political theories and administrative organizations are also discussed but more stress has been laid on the religious, literary and cultural aspects of Ancient India.Among the more important additions may be mentioned the chapters on the prehistoric age, including the Indus Valley Civilization, more detailed account of the ancient republican clans and the various medieval local dynasties, specially those of the south and the development of art and colonisation. Important changes, though much less extensive, have been made in chapters dealing with political theory and administrative system, as well as social and economic condition and an entirely new section on coins has been added. Considerable other modifications and rearrangements, involving re-grouping of chapters, have been made and more copious footnotes and fuller bibliography have been added for the guidance of advanced students. The book is of a more advanced type. It would meet the needs not only of general readers but also of earnest students who require a thorough grasp of the essential facts and features before taking up specialized study in any branch of the subject. It would also fulfil requirements of the candidates for competitive examinations in which Ancient Indian History and culture is a prescribed subject.
