The story of Savitri and Satyavan is from the great epic Mahabharata. It is one of the many told by Saga Markandeya to the Pandavas while they were in exile. Yudhishthira, the eldest Pandava prince, was depressed at witnessing the trials and tribulations of their wife Draupadi, whose devotion to her husbands remained constant despite her sufferings.

Markandeya explained to Yudhishthira that regardless of what one may have to suffer, the chastity and devotion of women will ultimately bring triumph to their loved ones and themselves. Draupadi’s goodness therefore, would ultimately deliver the five Pandava princes from their misfortunes, just as the chaste Savitri’s staunch devotion to her husband, but also to her parents and her husband’s parents. It was her intense devotion that gave her the strength to influence even Yama, the very God of Death, to release Satyavan from his clutches.

Simple motifs such as this one with two women swinging in the monsoon season have been treated in such a creative manner that the entire painting has turned a unique creation. Thanks to the master artists of this form of paintings, where a deep sense of colour and pattern is essential to create effective painting, the Batik paiting stands out to be a vibrant painting. Sawan jhoola is associated all Indian music and art form and it portrays the significance of the season. In this form of art images are created on cotton cloth using wax resist method. Rice starch and wax resists were used for printing. The technique had lost its popularity because of tedious procedures of waxing and dewaxing. The fine painting of the temple of Lord Jagannath is a fine manifest of the rich traditions

Various parts of the temple have been painted with some fabulous line formations and vibrant colours. The origin and development of Patachitra paintings are inextricably linked with the Jagannath Cult. Each year, the painted wooden images of Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Shubhadra in the Jagannath temple of Puri are ritually given the holy bath. This cleansing leads to the discoloration of the images. Hence, they are removed from the 'garbha griha' (the Seat in the Temple) for repainting. During this period, the temple images are substituted for three paintings, depicting the holy trio, cloth, Chitra = painting). Originating as a ritual, the Patachitra has evolved as a distinct school of painting and is regarded today as one of the most cherished collectors' items.

Schopenhauer is widely recognized as the Western philosopher who has shown the greatest openness to Indian thought and whose own ideas approach most closely to it. This book examines his encounter with important schools of Hindu and Buddhist philosophy and subjects the principal apparent affinities to a careful analysis. Initial chapters describe Schopenhauer's encounter with Indian thought in the context of intellectual climate of early nineteenth-century Europe. For the first time, Indian texts and ideas were becoming available and the belief that they could bring about a second Renaissance-an "Oriental Renaissance"-was widespread. Schopenhauer shared in this enthusiasm and for the rest of his life assiduously kept abreast of the new knowledge of India. Principal sections of the book consider the two main pillars of Schopenhauer's system in relation to broadly comparable ideas found, in the case of Hindu thought, in Advaita Vedanta, and within Buddhism in the Madhyamika and Yogacara schools. Schopenhauer's doctrine of the world as representation, or a flow of impressions appearing in the consciousness of living beings, is first considered. The convergence between this teaching and India idealism, especially the doctrine of illusory appearance (maya), has long been recognized. Schopenhauer himself was aware of it, emphasizing that it was the result not of influence but of a remarkable convergence between Eastern and Western thought.
