This Amar Chitra Katha special issue narrates three powerful tales of the Mother Goddess.
In the first story, Brahma and Vishnu are keen to see the ascetic Lord Shiva married. They appeal to Goddess Uma to Become Shiva’s consort and she is thus born to Brahma’s son Daksha. She is named Sati. With severe penances, young Sati wins the love of Shiva and they marry. Later, when Daksha insults Shiva, the ever-dutiful Sati immolates herself as she wishes to be reborn to a father she can respect.
True to her word, Sati is reborn as Parvati in the second story of this volume. She is the daughter of the great Mountain King, Himavat, and the lovely nymph, Menaka. Parvati fervently woos Shiva with charm, penance and servitude, in turn. The help of Kama, the God of Love, is also engaged in the romantic tale. Eventually, Parvati is united with her beloved Shiva, never to be separated form him again.
The third part of this volume narrates three tales of the mighty Goddess Durga. Shakti, the female principle, activated Shiva and therefore worshipped as Durga, the personification of universal energy. The worship of Durga can be traced to the mother worship of the ancient pre-Aryan cults. Durga is created form the powerful rays of lights that emanated form the faces of all the Gods. Her thousand arms carry the greatest of all the Gods’ weapons – Shiva’s trident, Vishnu’s discus and Indra’s thunderbolt, among other. In essence, Parvati, Durga, Ambika and Kali or Chamundi are all powerful manifestations of the supreme female Shakti.

Vishnu has countless incarnations, but the complete incarnations are ten in number nd are called Dasha Avtar. These ten start with the form of a fish and work their way up to the human form, cast in the image of god.
The tales of these descents or avatars told in various Puranas have contributed in no small measure to make Vishnu one of the most popular Hindu deities. His worshippers are called Vaishnavas. Of the eighteen major Puranas, six are known as the Vaishnava Puranas as they eulogise Vishnu and depict him as the Supreme Self.
According to some scholars, the identification of Vishnu with Vasudeva-Krishna, the deified Yadava hero, contributed significantly to the rise of Vishnu as the greatest of the gods in the hierarchy of the Hindu pantheon. In fact, Vasudeva-Krishna came to be considered the eighth avatar of Vishnu.
Vishnu inspires more love than fear in his devotees. The Bhagwat Purana, from which the tales in this Amar Chitra Katha have been adapted, abounds in narratives of the benevolent acts of Vishnu. Although he is kind and sympathetic, he is never taken in by the apparent devotion of the wicked and wily. Even when they suceed in wresting favours from the other deities, Vishnu maneuvers to bring about their destruction without falsifying the boons given to them by the gods.

Description:
TALKS IS ALL PURE GOLD -Major Alan Chadwick During the four years from 1935 to 1939,Munagala Venkataramiah,a veteran devotee and author of this work, painstakingly recorded the conversations that took place in the old hall between Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi and his devotees. People from all faiths and every walk of life came to sit at Sri Bhagavan s feet:Whether ignorant or erudite,a simple peasant or royalty, they traveled from the far corners of the earth to place their doubts before him or just to sit in his divine presence. His infinite compassion and unique insight ensured that none left his ashram empty handed. Their questions covered every aspect of the spiritual search and every problem troubling the human mind:Maharshi s answers gently led the questioner to the correct solution, each question answered according to the questioner s own level of spritual development. All had their doubts dispelled, their hearts suffused with peace and their beings uplifted in his presence. This book is a truthful chronicle of such happenings. Reflecting the warmth, the humour and the deep spirtual atmosphere generated by the Master s presence, this work is a treasure-house for all who seek the highest truth.Sri Bhagavan s teaching,self-enquiry,is the core of this work. However, doctrinal questions from the various faiths,Hindu,Christian,Buddhist,Theosophical etc., have also been answered by the Maharshi. His explanations have revealed the common thread underlying all faiths and the absolute unity of the spiritual quest, irrespective of the diverse paths encountered on the journey to the Highest Goal. First printed in the year 1955 the book has been reprinted sixteen times. Somerset Maugham visited India and met Sri Ramana Maharshi. It is said that the famous important work of Somerset Maugham 'Razors's Edge' is based on the philosophy of Sri Ramana Maharshi.
