DESCRIPTION:
The Detective Diaries presents the most sensational post-Independence cases of Kolkata Police, the oldest police commissionerate in Asia.Writer Supratim Sarkar, a serving additional commissioner of Kolkata Police, captures the different aspects of criminal investigation in a style that is rare among India’s true-crime writers. Starting from 1948 and coming right down to 2010, every case is a trendsetter, either owing to the nature of the crime, or the manner in which it was solved. From cold-blooded, psychopathic murderers to those who killed purely for money, from crimes of passion to conmen who made masterful use of technology, the selection is as varied as it is fascinating. No matter what the context, each crime made headlines. The man who mercilessly killed his pregnant wife, or the killer who wiped out his entire family, are as easily identifiable as the man who decided that big ticket robberies is the path to happiness. The highlight of the book is a case that caught the attention of the nation—the stoneman murders of 1989, a series of killings that terrorized Kolkata for months, and gave rise to an entire pantheon of urban legends. For the first time, this book presents the police version of this unsolved case.A glimpse into Kolkata's dark underbelly, guided by an author whose job takes him there every day, this book will shock and amaze in equal measure.

The author has carefully marshaled all kinds of data - literary, epigraphic, numismatic, glyphic and sculptural - and presents his materials and different problems in a systematic manner so as to build up a logical and coherent picture of Hindu Iconography in its wide and varied scope. A special feature of the book lies in a discussion of early iconographic types even before the systematization of this branch of knowledge in the ancient Hindu texts. First published in 1941, the present edition has been completely revised and enlarged so as to serve as the most authoritative guide and reference work on this interesting subject.

The divine dancer Lord Shiva has been painted blue. Lord Siva is a great master of dance (Nataraja) and it is believed that all the 108 modes of dancing known to the treatises on dancing have come from him. The beauty of the painting lies in Lord Shiva’s body that has been carefully painted in indigo colour. The method of dewaxing has given the painting a special effect. The Kailash Mountain has also been painted beautifully where the method of dewaxing is applied beautifully.

THE DEVOTIONAL POEMS OF MIRABAI offers the reader a sober English translation of two hundred of her Padas, based on the interpretative work of Indian scholars that has appeared during the last few decades. Three introductory essays deal with her life, her place in the Bhakti movement and the characteristics of her poetry. Terminal notes explain the mythological references to the non-Hindu reader, indicate some linguistic difficulties and record minor deviations from the fifteenth edition of Parashuram Chaturvedi`s MIRAMBAI KI PADAVALI, the basic text used.

Description
Rediscovering Meditation, the forgotten treasure of India. "If we want mankind to become healthy, if we want the terrorism that is increasing everywhere and becoming more and more explosive and violent to end, if we want the flames of fire to turn into flowers, then there is only one way. That way is called Samadhi, enlightenment. Become natural, become ordinary, live in equanimity and do not remain unacquainted with the secret that is hidden within you. The moment you become acquainted with it, a great revolution will take place, the revolution which turns dirt into gold, which turns an ordinary man into a Buddha, which picks you up from the ground and takes you to the heights of the stars in the sky. I have moved around the world saying only this one thing and have been amazed and astonished that people are not ready to hear it. People close their doors, countries close their doors, because what will happen then to their religions, to their religious scriptures? I know only one scripture. That is you." - Osho. In response to questions from individuals and members of the press, Osho speaks on the essential and timeless path of meditation - focusing on India's ancient heritage of inquiry into transforming human consciousness, of going within ourselves rather than looking to the outer world for fulfillment and recognition. Set against the backdrop of his return to India after having been illegally deported from the United States and after a subsequent "World Tour" where he was denied entry to 21 countries, Osho uses those recent experiences to highlight his essential message for the whole of humanity - to grow in consciousness, to discover individual freedom and truth through tapping into our inner treasure of awareness.

The Bengali version of the book Bharatiya Sangeetkosh earned for him ""Sangeet Natak Academy"" award as the best book on music published during the period from 1960 to 1968. Bimalakanta Roychaudhuri was born in 1909 in all illustrious family of musical heritage. He had his training in music from Sitalchandra Mukhopadhyay, Sitalkrishna Ghosh, Amir Khan (Sarod) and then from Inayet Khan, the foremost Sitar players of those days. He also had his musical training from his maternal uncle Birendrakishore Roychaudhuri and maternal grandfather Brojendrakishore Roychaudhuri. He took part in the translation of ""Sangeet Ratnakara"" from Sanskrit to Bengali under the patronage of Brojendrakishore Roychaudhuri. He was Chairman of the Board of Musical Studies of the University of Calcutta. His work ""Raga Vyakarana"" (in Hindi) has been published by the Bharatiya Jnanpith.
The growing interest of the Western, especially the English-speaking nations towards the North Indian Classical Music is more evident now than ever before. It is no doubt a sign for us to be happy about; at the same time it causes us deep concern whenever we try to appreciate
the great responsibility that has devolved upon us in presenting the correct interpretation of musical terms of the ancient Sanskrit
Sastras.
Aphoristic couplets of the ancient Sanskrit Texts, as they mostly are, even with their annotations, easily lend themselves to be
misinterpreted today. Painfully bearing this in mind the author has attempted this dictionary with great trepidations. He has depended solely on his own inner resources in interpreting the musical terms rather than allowing himself to be influenced by any other publications in English or in any other languages, lest he should tread on the trap of terminological inexactitude.
Review:
""This is an excellent text-book for it imparts knowledge of the ocean of music in the form of little drops. It is interesting to note that every word in music literature has a depth of meaning while the author explains the origin of each word with its history and development over the years along with suitable examples. The book reveals the meaning of 341 words and is indeed a music encyclopedia."" - Indica, Vol.:40, No.2, September, 2003
""The work explains, in very simple and clear language, the technical terms as found in Sastras and also those in common use. The history of the origin of the words, description of seventy-eight musical instruments and forty-seven varieties of talas."" - Dwaram V.J. Lakshmi, S.V.U. Oriental Journal Vol.: 46, No.182, 2003
""In this era, when Indian music is spreading worldwide, the author has rightly felt it a duty to prepare this Dictionary of musical terms. He presents the proper interpretation of musical terms of the ancient Sanskrit Sastras and explains them with reference to their origin and development. An additional fact is that the author remains true to Indian tradition and is not influenced by the Western methods of interpretation and presentations. Styled and arranged in such simple and precise form, this book will definitely be an essential aid for researches and students of music."" - V.K. Journal of Oriental Research Vol.71-73. p. 18
""This one covering words and terminology, Sanskrit, derivative and colloquial, applicable and applied to Hindustani Classical (Art) Music, is the foremost one, even considering the more recent publications on the usage of music terminology."" - R.C. Mehta, Journal of the Indian Musicological Society Vol.: 31, Jan-Dec.2000"

Man, from the very dawn of history, has never been at home in the world. He has continuously tried to search for such ways and means, both intellectual and practical, that would allow him to transcend the conditioned existence in which he finds himself in space-time bound universe. It has always been the burning desire in the heart of man to realize such a mode of life that transcends the tragic terror of finitude in terms of the realization of abundance of life. It is this search for the everlasting blissful life that constitutes the story as well as history of human religious search for meaning.
Both Yoga and Tantricism have their own eschatologist in terms of which transcendence of human finitude is endeavored to be actualized. To achieve this stereological goal, both the systems have discovered, in their own respective ways, such theoretical responses and practical methods by the application of which soteric goal can be appropriated. It is because of this feature that both may be said to be stereological systems of thought and practice.
This book attempts to study Yoga and Tantra from both historical and theoretical perspective. An effort has been made to trace the historical roots of both Yoga and Tantra, and how, with the passage to time, each system developed in the context of prevailing situations. The analytical interpretation of some of the major themes that Yoga and Tantricism tackle in the context of suffering in the world greatly enhances the value of the work and will be of great interest to students of religion.

Description:
The Divine Matrix represents a bold scholarly attempt to provide a framework for discussing these and other questions that will keep the interreligious dialogue project from grinding to a halt. In this book, philosopher and theologian Joseph Bracken first locates the Infinite as transcendent source and goal of human activity as the notion common to virtually all the major world religions. He suggests that the Infinite is prototypically experienced not as an entity but as an ongoing activity, the principle of activity for all beings. This idea is consistent with the notion of eternal and continuous motion is Aristotle, with the "act o being" (actus essendi) in the theology of Thomas Aquinas and Meister Ecker and with the ground of being of Shelling and Heidegger, as well as with Whitehead's definition of "creativity" . The divine Matrix proposes that the Infinite, thus identified, e understood as a nondual reality: an activity that does not exist in itself but only in the entities which it thereby empowers to exist. The Brackenargues, becomes the key to understanding ultimate reality within the different world religions.
