Vishnu With Lakshim - Ajanta style

The Ajanta style of batik painting is manifest in the beautiful painting of Vishnu and His consort Lakshmi. An amorous feeling marks the painting. Lord Vishnu is one of the Trinity Gods in Hinduism, the other two being Lord Brahma and Shiva. Lord Vishnu is responsible for the preservation of the Universe and in order to salvage His devotees from any impending catastrophe, He takes birth as human being. There are as many as ten such human incarnations of Lord Vishnu. Batik is one of the most popular styles of painting in India and a Batik artist needs to have a clear understanding of pattern and colours as they play a significant role in any Batik painting.

Vishnu: A Step Toward The Infinite
Vishnu: A Step Toward The Infinite

Indian culture is rich and its philosophy is robust, deep and capable of providing convincing answers to all questions. Since explaining the details of advanced philosophy to a layman is very difficult, our ancestors have devised the method of cultivating rituals. Among such rituals is the process of worship. Images, charts of mystic diagrams, paintings, stones and gems have been prescribed for daily worship to the common man. This book is an attempt to explain various forms of Vishnu and iconographical details of such images and also tries to bridge the gap between ritualistic approach to religion and the philosophical background of society. It is a guide to iconographic descriptions for the philosopher and a philosophical account for the simple devotee.

This book is also a window into the evergreen forest of Indian narratives and is full of narratives related to Vishnu's avataras as well as popular tales associated with popular temples. Individual chapters have been dedicated to every form listed in the Shrimadbhagauata. Details of iconographical proportions, interpretations of mudras, ayudhas, and bhangimas have been researched out of authoritative texts of Agamashastras and Shilpashastras. Many unknown forms of Vishnu like Badarayana, Shimshumara, and Gandabherunda have been included to widen readers' intellect. Besides these, Appendices 11 and III deal with Vishnu ayudhas and Vishnu pariuaara, respectively. As the title suggests, the book, however is small, but definitely, is a step toward the infinite.

Vishwa Rupa Lord Krishna - Brass Conch
Here the brass figure of Vishwa Rupa Lord Krishna is given a spectacular touch. Here the Lord is manifested in his Vishwarupa as was seen by Arjuna during the epic battle of Kurukshetra.
In chapters 10 and 11 of Bhagwat Gita, Lord Krishna reveals Himself as the Supreme Being and finally displays his Vishvarupa to Arjuna, who was reluctant to fight against his brothers in the epic battle of Kurukshetra. In Chapter 10 of Bhagwat Gita, Arjuna was keen to know about various manifestations through which Lord is pervading all over.
Lord Krishna replies that, "Of lights He is the radiant sun; of immovable things, He is the Himalayas; among the stars He is the moon; of purifiers He is the wind; of the wielders of weapons He is Lord Rama etc. etc."
On Chapter 11, Arjuna asks Krishna to show him the Cosmic Form of God. Lord Krishna bestows a special “vision” to Arjuna so that he can see the Divine God in His universal form. Krishna reveals His opulence, hundreds of thousands of varied divine and multicolored forms. Arjuna saw numerous mouths, eyes, wonderful visions. The form was decorated with many celestial ornaments and bore many divine upraised weapons. He wore celestial garlands and garments, and many divine scents were smeared over His body. All was wondrous, brilliant, unlimited, all-expanding.
"If hundreds of thousands of suns were to rise at once into the sky, their radiance might resemble the effulgence of the Supreme Person in that Universal Form." On seeing such a fierce form, Arjuna was awe-struck and asks God, “Who are you in this fearful form & what is Your mission in this form?” To this query of Arjuna "Lord Sri Krishna says: Time I am (Kala), the great destroyer of the worlds, and I have come here to destroy all people. With the exception of you (the Pandavas), all the soldiers here on both sides will be slain." Arjuna asks Lord Sri Krishna to return to his “intimate, beautiful form (saumya-rupa)." At Arjuna's request, Lord Krishna, again displays His real four-armed form and at last shows His two-armed form, thus encouraging the fearful Arjuna.

                              Vishwamitra - Paperback Comic Book
Known as the Land of the Rishis of Rishi Bhoomi, India proudly claims the heritage of the rishis(sages) as its own. Here, Vishwamitra stands out as a superlative example of the accomplishments of the rishis.
Vishwamitra was a Kshatriya king who constantly explored the realms of immortality beyond the kingdom of earth. His confrontation with Sage Vasishtha convinced him of the superiority of spiritual power over physical strength, and so he set out to attain it.
When he was given the status of Rajarshi, he was not content. This was because the word connoted a rishi who was born a Kshatriya and was considered inferior to a Brahmarshi, a rishi who had been born a Brahmin.
The arduous paths that Vishwamitra had to tread to conquer his passion in order to reach spiritual heights are described in detail, giving us a glimpse of the glory of the rishis.
India was later named after Bharata, the grandson of Vishwamitra.

                                Visnuism And Sivaism A Comparison
This expanded version of Professor Gonda's Jordan lectures, given at the School of Oriental and African Studies in the University of London in 1969, presents, not a regular account of the history of Visnuism and Sivaism, but rather a detailed discussion of some of those historical, doctrinal, ritual, and literary aspects of both religious currents which do not seem to have attracted the attention they deserve. Being comparative in character it is an attempt to delineate the main characteristics of each tradition and to reconsider some vexed problems relating to their origin and the history of their theological doctrines and practices. Special emphasis is laid upon their various interrelations, upon those many features which have their roots in the Vedic past, and upon the partly parallel and often divergent development of their rituals and philosophies.

About the Author: Late Dr. J. Gonda was Professor of Sanskrit and Indo-European Linguistics in the University of Utrecht. Preface THESE LECTURES were written in 1967 and 1968 and delivered, in an abridged form, in June 1969. My intention was to collect, in a small compass, some material illustrating the characters and interrelations of the great Hindu gods Visnu and Siva and to establish a comparison between their religions. The field surveyed is, however, so vast and our sources are so copious and manifold that inevitably many aspects are only briefly treated or even completely omitted. It gives me great pleasure to express my gratitude to the Governing Body of the School of Oriental and African Studies who invited me to write this book for publication in this series and to Mr L. A. van Daalen and Miss Y. B. W. Van Reck for supplying it with an index.
