The beautiful stone figure of Maharshi Patanjali is given a refine and detail treatment with some deep sense of accomplishment and refinement. Patanjali, the propounder of Yoga sutras, is often identified with primordial Vishnu, (the early stage of Vishnu). Patanjali is also known as the Adishesha, the incarnation of serpents that provided recreant resting place for Lord Vishnu, one of the Trinity Gods in Hinduism. Patanjali's feet are often shown as coiled serpents. In Hindu mythology Adishesha, sometimes also known as "Ananta" (The Endless One), is the thousand-headed ruler of the Nagas, the serpent race that is thought to guard the hidden treasures of the earth. Since yogic knowledge is the ultimate the secret treasure, many yogins still bow to Adishesha before beginning their daily yoga practice. "Salutation to the king of the Nagas, to the infinite, to the bearer of the mandala, who spreads out this universe with thousands of hooded heads, set with blazing, effulgent jewels."

The beautiful stone figure of Patañjali is given a spectacular and minute treatment. Patanjali is the compiler of the Yoga Sutras, a major work containing articles on the philosophical aspects of mind and consciousness. He is also the author of a major commentary on Panini's Ashtadhyayi. He is known to be an incarnation of Ādi S'esha who is the first ego-expansion of Vishnu, the manifestation of Vishnu. His primeval energies and opulences, is part of the so-called catur vyūha, the fourfold manifestation of Vishnu. Thus may Patañjali be considered as the one incarnation of God defending the ego of yoga. In recent decades the Yoga Sutra has become quite popular worldwide for the precepts regarding practice of Raja Yoga and its philosophical basis. "Yoga" in traditional Hinduism involves inner contemplation, a rigorous system of meditation practice, ethics, metaphysics, and devotion to the one common soul, God, or Brahman. He was a great Natya dancer and is revered by the exponents of classical Indian dance as their patron saint.

Description:
‘YogirajShri Shankar Maharaj was a Siddha yogi, a compassionate and unusual Guru not bound by rules or convention. He was bent and deformed in body, and usually appeared to be half-witted and inebriated from the brandy he drank. However when situation demanded, he would use his yogic powers to appear like a child to some, a tall muscular yogi to others, and even as Lord Shiva and Lord Hanuman to some others.
Shri Shankar Maharaj belonged to the NathPanth though he never wore the traditional attire of the sect. Maharaj spoke with a lisp and preferred not to preach himself, using instead disciples like TaisahebMehendale and SardarMirikar to spread the message of Dnyaneshwari, a commentary on the Bhagavad Gita by Sage Dnyaneshwar – a work that was very dear to Maharaj.
Maharaj extended his abundant grace to the rich and poor alike and was loved by all. Also his teachings were not limited to the Hindu tradition. In fact, he taught Muslims like Khansaheb the true meaning of Islam and induced them to do daily namaz. His contemporaries – Chile Maharaj of Kolhapur, known as the avatar of Lord Dattatreya, Fakir Baba, well-known sage from Maharashtra, and HazratBabajan, the renowned lady Sufi sage from Pune – considered him as their spiritual ‘brother’.
When Maharaj took samadhi in 1947 in Pune he was about 150 years of age. To this day hundreds of devotees visit his samadhi located on Pune-Satara road.
Yogiraj chronicles the life and teachings of this spiritual giant in the words of some of his most prominent disciples.
