DESCRIPTION:
Fiaz Ahmed Faiz is the most famous contemporary Urdu poet of the twentieth century who appeals both to the common man as well as the elite connoisseurs of poetry. Faiz's ghazals reflect a strong influence of the Persian style and diction, because of which he is often considered the inheritor of the tradition of Ghalib: and at the same time several of them are written in a simple conversational style dealing with the problems of the common man. Faiz was a committed poet who regarded poetry as a vehicle of serious thought rather than just a pleasurable pastime and often used it to champion the cause of socialistic humanism. Born in Sialkot in 1911, Faiz began his career as a lecturer in English but soon turned to journalism where he excelled, rising to the post of editor of The Pakistan Times. In 1951 the Pakistan government sentenced him to four years imprisonment on the charges of complicity in a failed coup attempt known as the Rawalpindi Conspiracy case. While in jail he wrote two of his greatest works, Dasta-e-Saba and Zindan-Nama. During the regime of Zia-ul-Haq he was forced into exile to Beirut. He returned to Pakistan in 1982 and two years later he passed away. This book offers a selection of the best of Faiz's ghazals and nazms along with their English translations as well as transliterations so you can enjoy the beauty and richness of Urdu language as you read the English transliteration while the translation helps you understand the meaning with all its subtle nuances.

DESCRIPTION:
Faraz Ahmed Faraz is considered as one of the greatest modern Urdu poets of the last century. Though essentially a romantic poet, steeped in classical Persian and Urdu traditions, who combined the sensitivity and lyricism of the great Urdu poet Meer Taqi Meer and philosophical range and depth of Mirza Ghalib, his poetry also reflected a progressive outlook. He is often compared to Faiz Ahmed Faiz for his simple style of writing because of which he become popular among common readers as well as the connoisseurs of Urdu poetry. Born on January 14, 1931 in Kohat (Pakistan) in a Pushto-speaking family, Faraz started his career as a script writer for Radio Pakistan. Later he moved to academics and also served as the director-general of the Pakistan Academy of Letters. Because of the long spells of dictatorship in Pakistan, Faraz often resorted to symbolism in his poetry to deliberately create an ambiguity so that his lines could be interpreted differently by different people, and mirrored a new kind of ''political sensibility''. Though Faraz wrote in Urdu, he did not hesitate in using Hindi words if they served his poetic purpose for he believed, ''Hindi is close to Urdu, besides it enriches the language''. On 25 August, 2008 at the age of seventy-seven he passed away due to kidney failure. This book offers a selection of the best ghazals and nazms of Faraz Ahmed Faraz translated into English by kuldeep Salil. And to help the reader enjoy the richness and beauty of Urdu language, the original Urdu ghazals are transliterated and presented both in Roman and Devnagri scripts.

DESCRIPTION:
Mohammad Iqbal was a poet and political philosopher, known both for his poetry and his ideas that were influential in the creation of Pakistan. Mohammad Iqbal was born in Sialkot, Pubjab in 1877. He graduated from Government College, Lahore, with a master's degree in philosophy and then taught there until 1905. During this period his poetry expressed an ardent nationalism, but a marked change came over his views between 1905 and 1908, while studying for his doctorate at Cambridge University, England, as he was deeply influenced by the philosophies of Nietzsche and Bergson and became extremely critical of Western civilization, which he regarded as decadent. Iqbal turned to Islam for inspiration and rejected nationalism as a disease of the West. He argued that Muslims must find their destiny through a pan-Islamic movement that ignored national boundaries. These ideas found expression in his long peoms 'Asrar-e-Khudi' (The Secrets of the Self) in 1915 and 'Rumuz-e-Bekhudi' (The Mysteries of Selflessness) in 1918, which he wrote in Persian and not Urdu. In his last years Iqbal returned to Urdu as his poetic medium. He died in Lahore on April 21, 1938. This book presents a collection of some of the best nazms and ghazals of Iqbal, along with their English translation as well as transliterations in both Hindi and English so that the readers can enjoy the original beauty of Urdu poetry.

It is this simplicity which makes a deep impact on the readers. Meer also used Persian imagery and idiom in his poetry to enhance its beauty. His masnavi Mu'amlat-e-Ishq is counted among the greatest love poems in Urdu literature. His personal life influenced the poetry he wrote and the pathos and melancholy in his poetry are due to the tragedies he suffered throughout his life. Meer wrote poetry in Urdu and Persian. DESCRIPTION:
Widely known for his wit and flamboyance, Oscar Wilde was a great advocate of art for art’s sake.
This charming collection of his prose and drama includes his most evocative works complete with his first and only, novel the Picture of Dorian Gray, a tale of pure beauty and unadulterated decadence.
Also included are his fascinating short stories, like the delightful tale of the Happy Prince and the poignant satire, the Birthday of the Infanta with its much darker overtones. Among his plays are comedies such as Lady Windermere’s Fan and A Woman of No Importance, seemingly trivial but mercilessly exposing Victorian hypocrisies. The book also includes the controversial and macabre tragedy, Salomé which was designed to make his audience shudder by its depiction of unnatural passion.
Vividly engaging and beautifully illustrated, Jaico Classics’ edition of Oscar Wilde’s timeless work is must-have for a true lover of literature and art.

DESCRIPTION:
Sahir Ludhianvi can be called the poet with a “social conscience” as is evident from his poetry in which social concerns are often the dominant themes. Through his poetry he lamented the decline of morality in society, discrimination against women, futility of war, and attacked the rise of the self-appointed custodians of religion and power-hungry politicians. Born into a Muslim family on March 8, 1921, his real name was Abdul Hayee and Sahir Ludhianvi was his pen name. Sahir's childhood was marked by the separation of his parents and the unfair treatment of his mother. His first work, a collection of poems in Urdu, Talkhiyan, was published in 1945 when he was just 24 years old. He worked as a journalist and editor in Lahore, editing several Urdu magazines. In 1949 he moved to Mumbai, after the Pakistan government issued arrest warrants for him for making inflammatory and communal statements. Mumbai proved to be lucky for him as his poetic genius was discovered by the Hindi film industry. For three decades he wrote lyrics of Hindi film songs, forming successful partnerships with several music directors. His ego often came in the way of his ability to sustain long term professional relationships and he fell out with people over trivial matters. He died of a cardiac arrest on October 25, 1980 in Mumbai. Sahir Ludhianvi was honoured with the Padma Shri in 1971, and on his 92nd birthday a commemorative stamp was issued in his memory. Best of Sahir offers an English translation of Sahir Ludhinavi's selected ghazals and nazms along with their transliterations in Hindi and English.
