DESCRIPTION:

In this serene figure, the Apostle of Non-Violence and Truth Buddha is shown in a meditative posture. The Lord is in Abhayamudra. Here brass, reconstituted turquoise and coral are nicely mixed to give more appeal to the figure. Abhayamudra is the gesture of reassurance and safety and is a hand pose that dispels fear and accords divine protection and bliss to the devotees. In this mudra, the Lord is holding his right hand upright, and the palm is facing outwards. This is one of the earliest Mudra found depicted on a number of Hindu, Buddhist, and Jaina images.

He is the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism, and was born as a royal prince and gave up the royal luxury in search of the Absolute truth. He established what today constitute the tenets of Jainism. When Mahavira (Siddhartha) was 30, he renounced his kingdom and family, gave up his worldly possessions, and spent twelve years as an ascetic and, spent most of his time meditating. He gave utmost regard to other living beings, even to insects. He had given up all worldly possessions including his drapery, and lived an extremely austere life. He showed exemplary control over his senses while enduring the penance during these years. His courage and braveness earned him the name Mahavira. These were the golden years of his spiritual journey, at the end of which he achieved Kaivlya Gyan. He was now a person of infinite harmony, knowledge and self-control.

The beautiful figure of the Lord Swaminarayan is given a nice and detail treatment. Bhagwan Swaminarayan was born on 2 April 1781 and passed away on June 1, 1830.

Swaminarayan is also known as Ghanshyam Pande, Ghanshyam Maharaj, Shreeji Maharaj, Hari Krishna Maharaj and Shri Hari.

Swaminarayan was born Ghanshyam Pande in Chhapaiya, Uttar Pradesh India in 1781. In 1792, he left home to undertake a 7-year pilgrimage across various places in India and he adopted the name Nilkanth Varni. Finally, he settled in Gujarat in 1799, where the preacher propounded his doctrine. In 1799, he was initiated into the Uddhav Sampraday by his guru, Ramanand Swami and given the name Sahajanand Swami.

After Ramamand Swami's death, Sahajanand Swami held a gathering and gave the Swaminarayan Mahamantra and he came to be known as Swaminarayan and was believed to be god by his followers. The Uddhav Sampraday came to be known as the Swaminarayan Sampraday.

The followers of Swaminarayan Sampraday believe in Vedic scriptures.

It is believed that on the 1st of June, 1830, Swaminarayan gathered all his followers and announced decision to take Samaadhi and did so after making this announcement. He was cremated according to hindu rites at Laxmi Wadi in Gadhada.

                                        Bhairava Head in Brass

The ferocious brass statue of Bhairav is given a refine and detail touch here. Bhairava is a fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva, one of the Trinity Gods in Hinduism. Lord Shiva is the God who is responsible for the destruction of the universe. But destruction here has a positive aspect as well as destruction is the prelude to a new generation. Here his eyes are bulging and hair is given a detail touch. The face is rough and his teeth are protruding out giving the figure an overall ferocious look.

The origin of Bhairava can be traced to a conversation between Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu recounted in Shiv Maha-Puran. Once Vishnu asks Brahma who is the supreme creator of the Universe. Brahma says Brahma is the supreme creator and therefor to worship him. This angered Shiva who incarnated in the form of Bhairava to punish Brahma. It is believed that Lord Shiva as the incarnation of Bhairava beheaded one of Brahma's five heads and since then Brahma has only four heads.

When depicted as Kala Bhairava, Bhairava is shown carrying the decapitated head of Brahma. Cutting off Brahma's fifth head made him guilty of the crime of killing a Brahmin (Brahmahatyapap), and following this he had to carry around the decapitated skull for twelve years and roam as Bhikshatana, a mendicant, until he had been absolved of the sin.

As frightful Bhairava, Lord Shiva is said to be guarding each of the Shaktipeeths. Each Shaktipeeth temple is accompanied by a temple dedicated to Bhairava.

Bhairava’s temples or shrines are located within or near most Jyotirlinga temples, the sacred twelve shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva across India, including Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Varanasi and the Mahakaleshwar Temple at Ujjain, where at the Kal Bhairav Temple, he is worshipped by the Kapalika and Aghori sects of Shaivism, here one can also find the Patal Bhairav and Vikrant Bahirav shrines.

It is believed that there are 52 forms of Bhairava, which are in fact considered as manifestation of Shiva himself.
