Description:

Swami Vaidyanathan (1913-90) was an awakened and extraordinary individual of the modern age; a rare combination: master of music (both Indian and Western), science, and philosophy. True to the wisdom of the Upanishads, he was awakened by the sheer questioning of the meaning of the word “young”. He pondered, “What is young?” He looked at the photo of his childhood in his mind and then looked at his present body and questioned, “Who is me, this or that?” His deep deliberation took his mind backwards in time and at one point he went beyond where there was no sun, or moon. This happened when he was 23 years old, studying the atom under Lord Rutherford in Cambridge, England. Later, overpowered by compassion at seeing the world’s suffering, he dedicated his life to assuage the suffering of people and unite humanity. He found a solution and called his thesis, Masquism. He did not compromise on his principles even in trying circumstances. He lived as a walking messenger of God with the message that made him a world Guru. He loved humanity as a father would love his family, leaving his message as his offering and contribution to human welfare and unity. This book gives an overall biography of Remaji with his insight, struggles, and his last two years of letters to the author.

Description:

Ramana has often been described as “an incarnation of Advaita”. The description is an intriguing philosophical oxymoron as the thunderous truth of Advaita boldly declares that no one has ever been born, lived, or died, and yet it is, without doubt, an astonishingly powerful image in conveying the profound affinity that exists between the teachings of Advaita and Ramana. As one passes the philosophically relevant portions of Ramana’s life and teachings through the lens of Advaita, they will be seen to be in perfect accordance with the essence of Advaita’s philosophical teachings. What is all the more astonishing is that Ramana’s teachings emerged spontaneously as the fruit of his sudden Great Awakening and only subsequently, almost by accident, did he learn of the ancient Upanishadic and Advaitic teachings. This book is an attempt to view, to see (have darshan) the life and teachings of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharsi through the lens of the philosophical system (darshana) known as Advaita Vedanta. Not only does the word darshan mean “being in the presence” of a sage or deity, but it is also the nearest equivalent Sanskrit word for “philosophy”. Darshana, from the Sanskrit root drsh meaning “to see” implies not only vision (which includes insight, intuition, and vision of the truth), but also the instrument of vision (such as viewpoint, world-view, doctrine, philosophical system).

Description:

This book presents an article published in 1963 and since translated into Spanish and French, but being published in book form in English for the first time.
The book records the vision of a truth seeker unclouded by theological dogmatism or sectarian bigotry. It is a quintessential exposition of the direct awareness of reality unmediated by the inherently defective instruments we use in our efforts to gain knowledge. All our exertions to obtain authentic knowledge about Reality are foredoomed to be frustrated by the inbuilt constraints of our psychological organism. Hence we only grope in the twilight borderland between the real and the unreal, mistaking the phantasms of appearance for the substance of reality. Thus the central paradox in our search for truth is that in order to know Reality as it is the knower should disappear, i.e. the ego-mind should spontaneously dissolve itself in its substratum — the thought-free consciousness with which the ultimate Reality is homogeneous. With the dissolution of the ego-mind the subject-object dichotomy eliminates itself and Truth shines in its original effulgence.

Description:

She would say in humility, l am a little girl only, I have not been educated at all ”, but I have heard the effervescence of Veda-Vedanta pouring forth from her divine lips.”
— Mahamandaleswar 1008 Sri Vidyanandaji Maharaj, Kailash Ashram, Rishikesh
For a span of more than fifty years Sri Ma Anandamayi dominated gracefully the spiritual horizon of India. The keepers of the Vedic heritage — the ascetics orders of India — were united in declaring her the quintessence of the Upanishadic Spirit. Eminent philosophers like Mahendra N. Sarkar and T.M.P. Mahadevan acknowledged her utterances as authoritative.
Much has been written about Sri Ma by erudite scholars as well as ordinary men and women. The present book is a lively and engaging account of Sri Ma’s enigmatic personality from the point of view of a single devoted family. It is an intimate and moving study of personal commitments. Yet through the author’s perspective an emerging modern society is glimpsed where orthodox rites, political upheavals, social changes create the shifting patterns of a kaleidoscope. Sri Ma and her entourage of visiting dignitaries, princes, scholars, village women and children, and renowned ascetics assume a three-dimensional image. According to Richard Lannoy, who has written the Foreword, the book is a valliant attempt at closing the distance between the known and the unfathomable.
“Trained in the highest rigours of academic discipline in renowned universities of India and Canada, Bithika Mukerji, being very close to Anandamayi Ma from early childhood, was able to observe from near rare dimensions of a surpassingly beautiful spiritual being. Her reminiscences of her days with the Mother consequently, have an authenticity, charm and insight difficult to come by.”
— Manas Mukul Das, Professor of English, University of Allahabad

Description:

“Looking at Her I felt that she is not a body, but just light. She seemed to see through me with all my shortcomings. All night I prayed to Her: Take possession of me completely, don’t let a particle of me remain.”
Death Must Die gives an intimate first-hand account of a courageous woman’s spiritual quest in close association with several of India’s greatest modern saints. Unfolding against the back-drop of Banaras in the1940s, where she lived as a teacher and musician, we are given an in-depth picture of her intense relationship with the extraordinary woman who becomes her guru — Sri Anandamayee Ma.
Atmananda, as she came to be known, was also closely associated with J. Krishnamurti, and a unique picture is given of him here in comparison with his peers and contemporaries within India. In her almost obsessive desire to “understand” J.K., as she calls him, she was driven ever deeper into the heart of Indian spirituality, encountering Sri Ramana Maharshi, as well as other outstanding Indian sages, before ultimately coming to the feet of Anandamayee Ma.
Although written in a diary format, Atmananda’s story reads almost like a novel, beginning with her youthful involvement with Theosophy in the Vienna of the 1920s, followed by her coming to Banaras to teach at Krishnamurti’s school. Here we encounter several of her friends and fellow travellers, in particular the English poet and mystic Lewis Thompson who exerted a profound influence on her. In 1945 she came in contact with Anandamayee Ma with whom she embarks on the great spiritual adventure of her life as told here-in, culminating in sannyasa, the ultimate renunciation. In particular, this book gives a true darshan (an experience of the presence) of Anandamayee Ma and the unique way in which she guided people to self-illumination. Ram Alexander, who was a close friend of Atmananda’s and a fellow disciple of Anandamayee Ma, writes with insight into the guru–disciple relationship and the particular problems that arise when a Westerner enters into this within a traditional Indian context.

Preface
Swami Brahmananda As we Saw Him is yet another addition to the rich reminiscences literature published by the Ramakrishna Order. Like the other books of the same genre, we are sure this book too will be received with enthusiasm and fervour. Reminiscences, on account of their sheer real-life connectivity, are an easy method to abstruse principle or concept of spirituality. They are, hence, widely welcomed by spiritual seeks everywhere.

As noted the Publishers Note, this book may be considered as a companion volume to The Eternal Companion, the book containing Swami Brahmanandas short life and teachings. Though some of the reminiscences were included in the earlier edition of Eternal Companion, this volume contains many more additional reminiscences. These reminiscences have been culled from diverse sources, a complete list of which is provided at the end of the book. Many of these reminiscences are appearing in his from for the first time (for instance the one by Swami Ashokananda). A good number of reminiscences included were originally written or recorded in Bengali but their English translation have appeared in var

These reminiscences, translated and explained by Swami Bhaskaranda from the original Bengali book, Brahmananda Leelakatha, by Brahmachari Akshayachaitanya, reveal many wonderful ways in which Swami Brahmananda touched the hearts of those fortunate enough to have met him. The Swami's multifaceted personality, along with his deep insights into life and human nature, establish these reminiscences as a true spiritual treasury. Includes a short biography, photos and illustrations, glossary and more.
Review

Swami Vivekananda once referred to Swami Brahmananda as a spiritual dynamo. These reminiscences related by Brahmachari Akshayachaitanya and freely translated by Swami Bhaskarananda clearly reveal the innumerable ways in which he radiated that spiritual power. His calm majestic personality is sweet, soothing, inspiring and enlightening. Though often lost in profound mystical moods, this man of God could be down-to-earth as well, dealing with day-to-day details of many centers of the Ramakrishna Order, expressing his sympathetic concern for devotees and, most importantly, showering his divine love on all. His deep insights into life and human nature touched the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to come into contact with him. It is said God has the nature of a child. Childlike himself, Swami Brahmananda was witty with an irrepressible sense of humor who delighted in playing practical jokes on many unsuspecting monks and devotees. These reminiscences are indeed a veritable spiritual feast for sincere seekers of God. --Swami Prabuddhananda, head of the Vedanta Society of Northern California

To reminiscence is to simply recall. But when one reminisces ... about a spiritual giant of Swami Brahmananda s stature, it becomes an act of meditation. Swami Brahmananda, a direct disciple of Sri Ramakrishna and the first President of the Ramakrishna Order, has left behind a rich legacy of how to live a spiritual vibrant life. His lofty state of mind, practical wisdom and a deep love and sympathy for all those who came in touch with him, is a legend in the Ramakrishna tradition. Swami Bhaskarananda, the translator of the present volume, has taken great pains to provide a faithful and clear translation, with copious explanatory notes and a glossary. He has also added a short biographical sketch of Swami Brahmananda. ... Nothing could be of greater help in the contemporary world where the need for such books is keenly felt, but rarely met. --Publisher, Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai

TALKS IS ALL PURE GOLD -Major Alan Chadwick During the four years from 1935 to 1939,Munagala Venkataramiah,a veteran devotee and author of this work, painstakingly recorded the conversations that took place in the old hall between Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi and his devotees. People from all faiths and every walk of life came to sit at Sri Bhagavan s feet:Whether ignorant or erudite,a simple peasant or royalty, they traveled from the far corners of the earth to place their doubts before him or just to sit in his divine presence. His infinite compassion and unique insight ensured that none left his ashram empty handed. Their questions covered every aspect of the spiritual search and every problem troubling the human mind:Maharshi s answers gently led the questioner to the correct solution, each question answered according to the questioner s own level of spritual development. All had their doubts dispelled, their hearts suffused with peace and their beings uplifted in his presence. This book is a truthful chronicle of such happenings. Reflecting the warmth, the humour and the deep spirtual atmosphere generated by the Master s presence, this work is a treasure-house for all who seek the highest truth.Sri Bhagavan s teaching,self-enquiry,is the core of this work. However, doctrinal questions from the various faiths,Hindu,Christian,Buddhist,Theosophical etc., have also been answered by the Maharshi. His explanations have revealed the common thread underlying all faiths and the absolute unity of the spiritual quest, irrespective of the diverse paths encountered on the journey to the Highest Goal. First printed in the year 1955 the book has been reprinted sixteen times. Somerset Maugham visited India and met Sri Ramana Maharshi. It is said that the famous important work of Somerset Maugham 'Razors's Edge' is based on the philosophy of Sri Ramana Maharshi.

Description:

Ramprasad Sen was born in the second decade of the eighteenth century in Halishahar in (then) Bengal. He was a great saint in Shakta cult. But, he was too natural a poet and composer. The songs are hymns to Goddess Mother Kali couched in rustic words and symbols of everyday life. Yet, most of this symbolism is a rare mosaic of the occult mystery of Tantrashastra and carry a double meaning. Thus, flying kites, the blind ox trudging routine endless circles of the village oil-machine (ghaani), the small town courtroom, the sailing craft of life-are all symbols of the highest mystic Shakta worship of Goddess Durga or Kali (Mahashakti). The English rendering aims to echo the nuances of the original in its threefold uniqueness: (a) simplicity and rustic symbols, (b) their inner spiritual mystique, and (c) muse and rhymes. The volumes will treat the English speaking world to a taste of this rare Indian spiritual songs and poetry. Printed Pages: 299.

Slaves of the Lord: Path of the Tamil Saints
Slaves of the Lord: Path of the Tamil Saints

In the Tamil country of south India, during the last millennium, a powerful cult of saints has been in existence. These saints referred to themselves as adiyar or tondar, both words meaning "slaves"-of the Lord. Although the south Indian saints are lesser known than those of northern India, or of Europe, they are in a manner more significant. For the sacred canon of south India, both the Saivites and Vaishnavas, consists of the poems composed by these saints. Their hymns are chanted daily in the southern temples, and often sung in homes and at festivals. In the field of art too, the saints of south India occupy a unique position. Images of the complete group of saints, sixty-three Nayanmars in the case of Siva and twelve Alvars in the case of Vishnu, are to be seen in every temple in the Tamil country. Placed beside the shrine of the god, the saints are anointed, clothed and worshipped, being an integral part of temple rituals. To view the art forms in their totality and to appreciate the saints and the status accorded to them in the Tamil country, the author introduces their biographical details, the milieu in which they functioned, and includes selected translation of their poems. A complete picture emerges when the strands of poetry and religious history are brought in to highlight a study of the art. This is not simply a book about images of the saints, but one that will appeal to students of religion and literature. This original and exciting book is of relevance for the history of ideas. Printed Pages: 218 with 87 b/w illustrations.

Minor Works (Complete Works of Goswami Tulsidas, Vol. VI)
Minor Works (Complete Works of Goswami Tulsidas, Vol. VI)

In ten short works contained in this volume, Tulsi composes verses on themes which evaluate his religious perspectives. Only three of these works are based on the deeds of Rama: In Baravai Ramayana, the rapture of devotion in the Name of Rama is brought out; in Ramalala Nahachhu Tulsi reiterates his faith in the Saguna form of Rama; in Ramajna Prashna, he ostensibly reads omens from the Deeds of Rama but concludes that all welfare depends on the devotion of Rama. Three of the works: Sankata Mochana, Hanuman Bahuka and Hanuman Chalisa are dedicated to Sri Hanuman. Tulsi's avowed principle was 'greater than Lord, the Lord's devotee take to be.' In the long poem Janaki Mangal Tulsi sings of the wedding ceremony of adi-shakti Sita to Rama. In Parvati Mangal, he departs from the story of Rama and sings on the wedding ceremony of adarsha-nari Parvati to Lord Shiva. In Vairagya Sandipini Tulsi observes that vairagya is not renunciation of the worldly duties but of Ego and bonds of 'I and mine.' Krishna Gitavali is a work totally unconnected with the story of Rama, the only common link between them being the supremacy of devotion and bhakti which is the reason for this work finding place in this anthology. Philosophy of Sri Madhavacarya
Philosophy of Sri Madhavacarya

Sri Madhavacarya (1238-1317) was the historical founder of the Dvaita system, which is one of
the three principal schools of Vedanta. He was a native of Tulunadu in Karnataka. Pajakaksetra,
eight miles south-east of the modern town of Udipi, on the West coast of S. India, was the village of his birth. He lived seventynine years.

He appeared on the Indian philosohical scene after the systems of Sankara and Ramanuja had been well established. The reasons which led him to propound a new system of Vedanta were his doctrinal differences and ideological dissatisfaction with contemporary trends and schools of thought within and without Hinduism and particularly with the system of Sankara which was the dominant philosophy of the time. In spite of the Theistic revolt against Sankara led by Ramanuja, Madhva could not agree with him on many points of Theistic doctrine. So he felt called
upon to give a new lead in thought to his countrymen.

Madhavaís writings are characterized by extreme brevity of expression and compression of thought. They need the help of a very good commentary to be understood in their fulness of thought and depth of meaning and intention. His commentator Jayatirtha has infused into them the necessary amplitude of utterance and expansiveness of thought and wealth of details.

This book is to give a complete, copious, critical and comparative exposition of Sri Madhavacarya's system of philosophy, bringing out its logical strength and metaphysical consistency and satisfyingness. It is intended to be an organic presentation of the system in all its essential aspects. It differs from all the other works in the field, including Dasgupta's, in showing how the concepts and categories of Madhava's philosophical thought have been conceived and formulated and have been put into a coherent system and in what relation they stand to those of other allied and rival systems. It brings out the special significance and interconnections of Madhava's doctrines and the architectonic unity of his system in relation to its parts. The reader is enabled to see for himself and appreciate the precise value and significance of some of Madhava's distinctive contributions to the perennial problems of religion and philosophy-particularly 'Indian Philosophy', for doctrine of Saksi, Svatantra, Visesa, Savisesabheda and Creation as Paradhinavisesapti.

Not only is such a systematic and critical exposition of Madhavaís philosophical system called for, but it has long been overdue. Metaphysically, it embodies the most powerful and sustained refutation of Vedantic monism. It has produced front-rank thinkers like Madhava, Jayatirtha and Vyasatirtha. It has an extensive philosophical literature of rare philosophical penetration, in Sanskrit. It has become the living faith of a large section of the people living in present-day India.

The volume is a good presentation of the philosophy of Sri Madhvacarya, complete in its architectonic unity. The author probes its ontological and epistemological foundations, and critcally examines the structure erected on them. The discussion focuses on crucial doctrines of theism, and brings to light for the first time the striking parallelisms of thought between Madhva and his Western contemporary St. Thomas Aquinas. Light is also thrown on how Madhva and his commentators anticipated the views of modern philosophers like Spencer, Russell and Hobhouse on the nature of time, space and memory. The latest researches on Madhvacarya's role in the Vedantic Bhakti movement and his attempt to harmonize the Upanisadic texts on monism and dualism are substantially drawn upon.

The Philosophy and Religion of Sri Caitanya
The Philosophy and Religion of Sri Caitanya

This is a comprehensive, critical and comparative study of all aspects of the philosophy and religion of Sri Caitanya. In the first three chapters the history of the Vaisnava religion is traced from the earliest Vedic period to pre-Caitanya Vaisnavism in Bengal and some controversies regarding the life of Sri Caitanya and the Sampradaya or the sect to which he belongs are set at rest. In the succeeding chapters the problems of philosophy and religion are discussed in detail. It is shown how Sri Caitanya breathes a new spirit into philosophy and religion by transcending the narrow and mutually conflicting 'isms' and dogmas and reconciling them in a higher synthesis by means of the concept of the absolute as Bhagavan and the doctrine of Acintyabhedabheda or inconceivable identity-indifference. The importance of bhakti as the exclusive means of attaining God is His highest and sweetest form is stressed. Prema or divine love is distinguished from eroticism and established as the highest end. The doctrine of rasa or transcendental relish is explained and Parakiya rasa is established as the highest rasa. Printed Pages: 260.

About the Book

In the Hindu tradition Kapila is admired and worshipped as a philosopher, a divinity, an avatara of Visnu and as a powerful ascetic. This book is the first monographic study of this important figure. The book deals with Kapila in the Veda, the Sramana traditions, the Epics and the Puranas, in the Samkhya system of religious thought and in the ritual traditions of many contemporary Hindu traditions. Kapila is an important figure in the sacred geography of India and the study of the rituals and narrative traditions of the firthas of Kapila is an important contribution of this book. The book also contains a translation into English of the text Kapilasurisamvada, Kapila's teaching of Asuri, found in a few manuscripts of the Southern recension of the Mahabharata.

Kapila refers to a pluralistic phenomenon. The Kapilas in the Hindu tradition can't be reduced to a single figure. In general, pluralism characterizes the religious traditions and religious life in South Asia, ancient, medieval, modern as well as contemporary. Openness for the greatest possible plurality is therefore often a good way to approach religion in South Asia. This is the case also with the study of Kapila. The approach of the book therefore is pluralistic.
