Saivism encompasses all aspects of religion: a philosophy, a theology, a conception of the universe, a current of devotion, a world of myths, elaborate rituals in organized temples, expressions in plastic arts, in poetry, music, and dance. Images of Siva of great variety and impressive beauty are countless all over India. To improve our understanding of such a rich and elevated subject, the sources are the Sanskrit texts of Epics, Puranas and Agamas, The present book gives a clear presentation of Saivism through a survey and an erudite reading of this vast literature. The Agamas are the key to the knowledge of temple organization and rituals, the description of which is a unique and original contribution of this work. This very readable work contains an amazing quantity of information, carefully referenced at every step, and is likely to be of the greatest utility to researchers in history of religion, medieval to modern, as well as to the general reader interested in Saivism.

In the ancient lexicons of Vedic and classical periods, the influence of ¶gama has been parliamentary and pivotal. NÈ yaveda by seer Bharata is a magnum opus dates back to 5th century B.C. The other important works in musicology such as Brihaddeshi, Abhinavabharati and Sangitaratnakara are from post-Vedic and mediaeval periods, distinguishly composed by the great Saivite polymaths. Thus the streams of ¶gama consciousness and the works of Indian art and poetics went together in the creative evolution of Indian mind. It was obvious to trace and deconstruct the inter-influence in modern cultural mileu. This research work is the outcome.

Description:

Abhinavagupta, undoubtedly the greatest genius of India in the fields of philosophy, aesthetics, poetics, dramaturgy, Tantra and mysticism, is being rediscovered only in the last few decades. Although several scholars, in India and abroad, are engaged in studying his works, it is surprising that there are still few translations available.
Abhinavagupta explains in his commentary that he undertook this work because he felt that his predecessors when commenting on the Bhagavad-Gita had not understood its secret or esoteric meanings. With the main purpose to explain these esoteric meanings, Abhinavagupta elaborates the secret doctrine of the purification of the sense-organs through the alternation of enjoyment of worldly objects and deep meditation. He claims that the continuous exchange of two contradictory experiences, i.e. gratification of the senses which brings satisfaction and samadhi in which sense-organs are reduced to one’s own atman, quickly brings the highest good.
The great merit of the present translation of Abhinavagupta’s “summary of the (real and secret) meaning of the Bhagavad-Gita” lies in the following: First, it includes the text and translation of the Kashmiri version of the Bhagavad-Gita, which in places differs from the one commented upon by Shankara (there are fifteen additional verses, and many verses partially differ from the verses found in other recensions). Besides, it brings out the specific meanings in the context of Kashmir Shaiva philosophy and yoga, without being influenced by Samkhya or Vedanta. The translation and explanatory notes show a deep understanding of Kashmir Shaiva metaphysics and yoga.
The present work will fulfil an important role by presenting a different version of the Bhagavad-Gita in the light of Kashmir Shaivism. It will also be inspiring for anyone interested in the practice of the secret yoga of the Gita.

    ISBN-13: 978-8186569061
Description:

Since time immemorial, one perennial Wisdom permeates the whole history of mankind, expressing itself in the spiritual traditions of all peoples. Even though these traditions often differ in their forms of expression in different places and times, they nevertheless fully coincide in their essential contents.
A.K. Coomaraswamy once said: “The time is coming when a summa of the Philosophia Perennis will have to be written, impartially based on all orthodox sources whatever.” Whitall N. Perry, after fifteen years of patient work, completed this anthology containing several thousands of quotations gathered from a wide range of spiritual authorities, pointing to this One trascendent Truth which manifests through many languages.
In Perry’s words: “The reader is invited to enter upon a spiritual journey. In this book he will encounter the heritage he shares in common with all humanity, in what is essentially timeless and enduring and pertinent to his final ends. Out of this myriad mosaic of material emerges a pattern of the human personality in the cosmos that is unerringly consistent, clear, and struck through with a resonance infallible in its ever renewed reverberations of the one same Reality.”
“Marco Pallis [in his foreword] distinguishes three classes of reader to whom this book is likely to be of service: those who are already ‘spiritually committed’; those who are still seeking to become such; and those who, from any motive or angle, concern themselves with ‘Comparative Religion’. In any case it is to be hoped that the presence of this work on the shelves of many a private, public and university library not only will illumine an enliven the study of religion on the more academic levels [...] but also will lead many individuals to a truer and more fruitful personal response to religion and spirituality [...]. Indeed, for whatever purpose this anthology is consulted, few individuals will be able even to skim through its pages without being drawn somewhat into its dephts.”

About Author

WHITALL N. PERRY at an early age became interested in Platonism and Vedanta. Even before college, his contacts —though travels in the Near, Middle and Far East — with Islamic, Hindu and Buddhist cultures left deep-rooted impressions, and after a short term at Harvard, he chose to return directly to the living sources of his elected field. In 1946 he came under the close personal influence of Coomaraswamy, and from then until 1952 resided in Egypt, where he enjoyed a continuing realtionship with Rene Guenon. During this same period commenced his association with Frithjof Schuon, and he has since had intimate personal ties with foremost authorities in Hindu, Buddhist, and Islamic orders, as well as with Roman Catholic and Orthodox contemplative circles. The author counts many personal friends among the American Indians with whose sages in particular he has been familiar.
Whitall N. Perry has made contributions on metaphysical and cosmological subjects to various journals, including notably Studies in Comparative Religion.

Description:

“Marco Pallis was at once an incomparable authority on Buddhism, especially in its Tibetan form, a defender and protector of the Tibetan tradition in the West since the tragedies of 1951, a lover of nature and a mountain climber who first encountered Tibetan Buddhism while climbing Himalayan peaks in the 1920s, a profound student of other religions, especially Christianity, and a very accomplished musician. All of these concerns of Pallis are reflected in A Buddhist Spectrum, whose themes are woven together by the principles of tradition and, more particularly, by Buddhism. It is a Buddhist work on both religion as such and religions in their multiplicity, presented in a contemporary but traditional language. A major characteristic of the book is that it is concerned with the reality of Buddhism and not just a theoretical analysis of its ideas. A Buddhist Spectrum is a wise book while being thoroughly reliable from a scholarly point of view.
A Buddhist Spectrum is at once one of the most readable works on Buddhism and a major work on comparative religion and living spirituality. It is the fruit of the thoughts and meditations of a man whose authoritative exposition during several decades of religious questions in general and Buddhism in particular, especially in its Tibetan form, have had a profound influence upon many scholars and practitioners of religion in both East and West.”
—Seyyed Hossein Nasr, George Washington University
“For insight, and the beauty insight requires if it is to be effective, I find no writer on Buddhism surpassing him.”
– Huston Smith, Univesity of California Berkaley

Description:

"The past thirty years have witnessed dramatic developments in the study of Agamic Shaivism in general. Progress has been made on several fronts. On the one hand there has been a substantial increase in the historical and anthropological data. On the other, access has been cleared to vast reserves of unedited and unpublished sources. This book is a collection of essays which document in their own way the author’s personal journey in these years through parts of the Shaiva and, to some extent, the Vaishnava Tantras. Anyone who has travelled on similar paths knows how vast and marvellous the lands of this extraordinary world are.
“Self-awareness, Own Being and Egoity” studies the history of the notion that the one, unique reality which is equally Shiva, the Self and all that appears and exists in any form, is pure, universal “I” consciousness aham-bhava.
Abhavavada, the “Doctrine of Non-being” focuses on a little known doctrine taught in the Bhairava and Kaula Tantras that Shiva, who is inherently beyond characterization, is Non-being.
“The Samvitprakasha” is an important text for monistic Kashmiri Vaishnavism. Its author, date and teachings are the subject of chapter three.
“The Inner Pilgrimage of the Tantras” deals with sacred geography. Sacred geography is not only divine. It is also human. It is more than physical, social or cultural geography. It is the geography of the land in which we live. It is not just about space or places, it is about our home. The more esoteric early Tantric cults were concerned with the roaming ascetic. But now the places he has to travel to are much increased in number. Moreover, they are no longer just simply called “sacred lands/kshetra” they are specific seats (pithas) of deities and meeting grounds for male initiates and Yoginis, their female counterparts. The development of the sacred geography of India we witness in these sources is paralleled by that of their public, exoteric counterparts — the Puranas.
“Kubjika, the Androgynous Goddess” and “The Cult of the Goddess Kubjika” deal with the secret goddess of the Malla kings, who ruled the inhabitants of the Kathmandu Valley up to about the middle of the seventeenth century. The king’s deity is that of his country and people. With two faces, the inner secret goddess and the outer public god, the king’s deity transmits its energy and grace both in the outer domain and through the network of esoteric familial goddesses who, energies in their own right, are thereby inwardly charged. Thus the king, his goddess and his priest together are the axis of this inner secret society which, although close to its end, still survives today."

Preface
Swami Brahmananda As we Saw Him is yet another addition to the rich reminiscences literature published by the Ramakrishna Order. Like the other books of the same genre, we are sure this book too will be received with enthusiasm and fervour. Reminiscences, on account of their sheer real-life connectivity, are an easy method to abstruse principle or concept of spirituality. They are, hence, widely welcomed by spiritual seeks everywhere.

As noted the Publishers Note, this book may be considered as a companion volume to The Eternal Companion, the book containing Swami Brahmanandas short life and teachings. Though some of the reminiscences were included in the earlier edition of Eternal Companion, this volume contains many more additional reminiscences. These reminiscences have been culled from diverse sources, a complete list of which is provided at the end of the book. Many of these reminiscences are appearing in his from for the first time (for instance the one by Swami Ashokananda). A good number of reminiscences included were originally written or recorded in Bengali but their English translation have appeared in var

These reminiscences, translated and explained by Swami Bhaskaranda from the original Bengali book, Brahmananda Leelakatha, by Brahmachari Akshayachaitanya, reveal many wonderful ways in which Swami Brahmananda touched the hearts of those fortunate enough to have met him. The Swami's multifaceted personality, along with his deep insights into life and human nature, establish these reminiscences as a true spiritual treasury. Includes a short biography, photos and illustrations, glossary and more.
Review

Swami Vivekananda once referred to Swami Brahmananda as a spiritual dynamo. These reminiscences related by Brahmachari Akshayachaitanya and freely translated by Swami Bhaskarananda clearly reveal the innumerable ways in which he radiated that spiritual power. His calm majestic personality is sweet, soothing, inspiring and enlightening. Though often lost in profound mystical moods, this man of God could be down-to-earth as well, dealing with day-to-day details of many centers of the Ramakrishna Order, expressing his sympathetic concern for devotees and, most importantly, showering his divine love on all. His deep insights into life and human nature touched the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to come into contact with him. It is said God has the nature of a child. Childlike himself, Swami Brahmananda was witty with an irrepressible sense of humor who delighted in playing practical jokes on many unsuspecting monks and devotees. These reminiscences are indeed a veritable spiritual feast for sincere seekers of God. --Swami Prabuddhananda, head of the Vedanta Society of Northern California

To reminiscence is to simply recall. But when one reminisces ... about a spiritual giant of Swami Brahmananda s stature, it becomes an act of meditation. Swami Brahmananda, a direct disciple of Sri Ramakrishna and the first President of the Ramakrishna Order, has left behind a rich legacy of how to live a spiritual vibrant life. His lofty state of mind, practical wisdom and a deep love and sympathy for all those who came in touch with him, is a legend in the Ramakrishna tradition. TALKS IS ALL PURE GOLD -Major Alan Chadwick During the four years from 1935 to 1939,Munagala Venkataramiah,a veteran devotee and author of this work, painstakingly recorded the conversations that took place in the old hall between Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi and his devotees. People from all faiths and every walk of life came to sit at Sri Bhagavan s feet:Whether ignorant or erudite,a simple peasant or royalty, they traveled from the far corners of the earth to place their doubts before him or just to sit in his divine presence. His infinite compassion and unique insight ensured that none left his ashram empty handed. Their questions covered every aspect of the spiritual search and every problem troubling the human mind:Maharshi s answers gently led the questioner to the correct solution, each question answered according to the questioner s own level of spritual development. All had their doubts dispelled, their hearts suffused with peace and their beings uplifted in his presence. This book is a truthful chronicle of such happenings. Reflecting the warmth, the humour and the deep spirtual atmosphere generated by the Master s presence, this work is a treasure-house for all who seek the highest truth.Sri Bhagavan s teaching,self-enquiry,is the core of this work. However, doctrinal questions from the various faiths,Hindu,Christian,Buddhist,Theosophical etc., have also been answered by the Maharshi. His explanations have revealed the common thread underlying all faiths and the absolute unity of the spiritual quest, irrespective of the diverse paths encountered on the journey to the Highest Goal. First printed in the year 1955 the book has been reprinted sixteen times. Somerset Maugham visited India and met Sri Ramana Maharshi. It is said that the famous important work of Somerset Maugham 'Razors's Edge' is based on the philosophy of Sri Ramana Maharshi.

Among the priceless teachings that may be found in the great Hindu poem of the Mahabharata, there is none so rare and precious as this, 'The Lord's Song'. Since it fell from the divine lips of Shri Krishna on the field of battle and stilled the surging emotions of his disciple and friend, how many troubled hearts has it quieted and strengthened, how many weary souls has it led to Him! It is meant to lift the aspirant from the lower levels of renunciation, where objects are renounced, to the loftier heights where desires are dead and where the Yogi dwells in calm and ceaseless contemplation, while his body and mind are actively employed in discharging the duties that fall to his lot in life. That the spiritual man need not be a recluse, that union with the divine Life may be achieved and maintained in the midst of worldly affairs, that the obstacles to that union lie not outside us but within us - such is the central lesson of the Bhagavad-Gita.

But, as all the acts of an Avatara are symbolical, we may pass from the outer to the inner planes and see in the fight of Kurukshetra the battlefield of the soul, and, in the sons of Dhritarashtra, enemies it meets in its progress Arjuna becomes the type of the struggling soul of the disciple and Shri Krishna is the Logos of the soul. Thus the teaching of the ancient battlefield gives guidance in all later days and trains the aspiring soul in treading the steep and thorny path that leads to peace. To all such souls in East and West come these divine lessons, for the path is one, though it has many names and all souls seek the same goal, though they many not realize their unity.

About the Book:

This attempts to reconcile the Raja-Yoga of Patanjali with Hatha-yoga. Hatha is considered to be made up of two syllables ha meaning the moon and tha meaning the sun. They correspond to the breath which flows through the left and the right nostrils. Hatha-yoga is the preliminary step and ends in Raja-yoga Consciously or unconsciously. The Saivagama urges students not to give up the practice of asana and pranayama for keeping the body in perfect health.
