Residue
Residue

Named for the revolutionary Trotsky by a missing communist father he never saw, Leon Ali is a Kashmiri born in Britain and brought up by a single mother in Delhi. Keya Raina is a Kashmiri scholar of exile, an insecure immigrant, who collects other people’s stories. Marked by the oppressive history of Kashmir, they meet in Berlin, the city of Cold War partitions, and begin a journey of discovery, which reveals to them the story of Shula Farid, the bohemian wife of a staid Bengali diplomat. Through their travels, these two young Kashmiris outside Kashmir find startling truths about themselves in the midst of unwitting identities and multiple belongings—the residue of shared human emotions.
A riveting exploration of mobility and affinity across the borders of nation and faith, Residue provides fascinating glimpses of class-stratified urban India, divided Berlin, and complications of identity in England. It is a remarkable novel about divided lands and fortress continents, lines inked in blood and memory, and the absences they create in people’s lives and imaginations

              Description

Jim Corbett’s tales of tiger hunts are legendary. Mostly alone, he would traverse the hills and jungles of India, hunting his quarry using blood trails, examining pug marks and following broken twigs and branches, often putting himself at risk. Later, he became a conservationist, taking up the cause of the endangered royal Bengal tiger.

This comprehensive volume contains some of Jim Corbett’s best-known books and short stories, from The Man-eating Leopard of Rudraprayag, a gripping tale of a notorious leopard, to the fascinating stories in Man-eaters of Kumaon and The Temple Tiger. Showcasing Corbett’s acute awareness of jungle sights and sounds and enlivened by his descriptions of village life, this is a must-read for those interested in wildlife and tiger tales.

                    Description

The Mavericks of Mussoorie is an inspiring look at how an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, in his individual capacity, can work to influence and execute policies that make a positive contribution to the country. It is surprisingly honest in its acknowledgement of some of the pitfalls of the system and sets out clearly what needs to be done to bring out the full potential of the Civil Service. In this candid memoir M. Ramachandran opens up on how and why, despite a distinguished career, the post of Cabinet Secretary eluded him. This book unfolds what transpired and reveals what happens behind the scenes in Indian bureaucracy.
