After a period of 5 years he wrote his first story "Maunvrat`. He started writing again but he was not satisfied with the new social pattern. He believed that socialism will bring happiness but for that the old pattern of socialism should be demolished completely. He tried to search for the new and virtues which would provide healthy atmosphere to everybody. He tried to attempt this through his stories included in this collection.

Every time, she sent him a letter, she sent a small flower of 'bakul' for him, without fail. Her letter always brought back some special memories for Shridhar. He used to get lost in the memories with the small flower in his hand. The flower represented her. Her mild manners, her simplicity, the fragrance around her, and the chastity in her eyes along with the love every single tender thing was present in the flower. Her personality was devoid of ego. He had collected each flower from her letter. He had stored all those flowers in a small bag. Every day, he kept the bag beneath his pillow. Every letter brought a new hope for him, saying that the flower will be a lifelong partner. Sudha Murthy, has pictured this very sensitively.

Exploitation had become the first rule of conduct for the high-ranking officers. As the voyage continued for a very long period, everyone was anxious to see the land. While traveling towards the Markisus islanders, two of its sailors Tomo-the author and his friend Tobo decide to run away. As they dropped the anchor at Nukuhewa, the captain permitted them to stroll around the port. They saw a golden opportunity to fulfil their plan. To stay away from the ship, they start running. They cannot afford to halt at any place. Initially, they enter the Taipi region. All they have with them are a few loaves and biscuits. They survive the hardships but after travelling thus for a week or so, the Taipi detain them. For four months they remain with the Taipi. How did they survive during this period is worth reading.

        DESCRIPTION:

Ashapurna Debi gazed into the heart of the domestic life of the Indian woman as no other writer in the world has done. In one story after another, numbering into thousands by the time she was done, she examined the imprisonment of the women within their homes and their responses to the power play, pressures and hypocrisies lying beneath the surface of the apparent solidity of the middle-class urban family. Nobody has written as relentlessly, with as much insight and yet with as light a touch, of the darkness of both the interior and the behavioural life within the four walls of the home. Over more than 70 years of a writing career, she created an extraordinary oeuvre, whose depths will be mined for generations.Twenty-one of Ashapurna Debi’s most shocking stories, cherry-picked from over a thousand, have been brought together in this collection. Each of them unravels an unexpected, even dreadful, side to the personalities of the women who feature in them. In every story, a deceptively quiet but potentially explosive act of revolt takes place – or comes close to taking place. Far from the sweet and submissive stereotype of  wife/mother/daughter/woman of the house that familial structures have enforced, it is the rebellious side of the woman, often forced to emerge through cruelty, viciousness and even hatred, that stands revealed. these are scandalous stories, each one of them.

        DESCRIPTION:

Set in a Malabar village of Christian settlers, The Book of Passing Shadows, translated from the Malayalam original Aayusinte Pusthakam, tells the story of a family’s fall from grace, and their journey to redemption. As the narrative unravels against the wider inner conflict between bodily temptations and spiritual aspirations, the sins of one generation seem to visit ominously upon the next. Through his journey from an innocent childhood to a ruined adolescence, Yohannan loses everyone he knows as ‘family’—a father who is a convicted felon, a grieving mother who passes away while her husband is in prison, an elder sister with prospects who elopes to build a better life, a grandfather who embraces death after committing a sin, and a best friend and lover who chooses religion over a domestic life. The only solace he finds is in the loving companionship of a grieving widow, Sara, who has been equally wronged by fate and unbundles her woes with him.Faith plays a pivotal role—provides a mythical, ethical, and moral scaffolding of this heart-rending novel, which resonates with the agony and pathos of the human spirit caught in the travails of earthly life.Written in a sublime style made lyrical with a biblical cadence and rich in scriptural allusions, this passionate and visionary narrative has remained popular with readers since it was first published in 1984.

The Detective Diaries presents the most sensational post-Independence cases of Kolkata Police, the oldest police commissionerate in Asia.Writer Supratim Sarkar, a serving additional commissioner of Kolkata Police, captures the different aspects of criminal investigation in a style that is rare among India’s true-crime writers. Starting from 1948 and coming right down to 2010, every case is a trendsetter, either owing to the nature of the crime, or the manner in which it was solved. From cold-blooded, psychopathic murderers to those who killed purely for money, from crimes of passion to conmen who made masterful use of technology, the selection is as varied as it is fascinating. No matter what the context, each crime made headlines. The man who mercilessly killed his pregnant wife, or the killer who wiped out his entire family, are as easily identifiable as the man who decided that big ticket robberies is the path to happiness. The highlight of the book is a case that caught the attention of the nation—the stoneman murders of 1989, a series of killings that terrorized Kolkata for months, and gave rise to an entire pantheon of urban legends. For the first time, this book presents the police version of this unsolved case.A glimpse into Kolkata's dark underbelly, guided by an author whose job takes him there every day, this book will shock and amaze in equal measure.

Oxygen Manifesto is a story of the triumph of ordinary people over the might of the establishment in their battle to save the environment.Thatha lives in a remote and inaccessible part of Manipur and Ravi is a young IAS officer from the Tamil Nadu cadre. Circumstances bring them together and they create the most effective environmental movement the world has ever seen. They shun the politics of criticism and personal attacks and focus on establishing a new polity based on the principles of environmental protection, habitat conservation, direct civil action and democratic decentralization.Oxygen Manifesto is an engaging story about environmental degradation and the impact of the Anthropocene. It exposes the myth around wealth creation and the paradigm of economic growth. It also plants a development narrative that is environment-centric—an idea which is considered fringe in today’s times, but is bound to emerge as a mainstream thought in the future. The story also has an undercurrent of minimalism and veganism, as opposed to consumerism and wasteful consumption. A novel concept of taxing goods and services based on their carbon and water footprint has also been introduced by the writer. This is a must-read for anyone who cares about the future of human civilization
