            Preface
A popular History of Hindu Medicine is a desideratum in English Literature and yet the growing spirit of the age calls for a systematic arrangement of the subject. This miniature History of Hindu Ayur- Veda' is the growth of the times. Amidst the mass of writings scattered in the pages of forgotten works on classical Hind, this little book will, it is hoped, serve as beacons in directing the foot-steps of the rising generation, and tend to inspire them with zeal to pursue their course of investigation in the realms of antiquity, and stimulate them to fulfill the heritage of the intellectual glory of their sires worthy of the tradition of their race.

It now remains to add that the materials of this sketch were mostly gleaned from the monumental work of Dr. Thomas A. Wise, to the genius of whose pen the world is indebted for a comprehensive Review of the History of Medicine.

The Mahayanasraddotpadasastra – The Awakening of Faith is one of the most important books in the world. Its importance is still more apparend when we consider that its doctrines are the fundamental onesd of the Mahayana Faith, which is by far the chief school of Buddhism. This Chinese version of the texts xxwas mxade by the Buddhist missionary, Paramarth, who lived in China in the Liang dynasty, A.D. 502-555.

The book is divided into five chapters which deals with Reasons for writing this books; The fundamental doctrine of the Mahayana Faith; Exposition of the Faith; The practice of the Faith, and Advantages of the Faith.

              Translator’s Introduction

This is the title of one of the most important books in the world. A Japanese scholar has translated it The Awakening of Faith. It might also be rendered The Mahayana Faith or The Faith of the New Buddhism. Its importance is apparent when we consider the fact that of the 26,000 Buddhist monks and nuns in Japan no less than 17,000 of them belong to the Pure Land School and the True School, which regard this book as their fountain and origin.

Its importance is stilt more apparent when we consider that its doctrines are the fundamental ones of the Mahayana Faith, which is by far the chief school of Buddhism, not only in Japan, but also in China, where are the great majority of the Buddhists of the world. If we estimate the value of books by the number of adherents to their doctrines, then, after the Bible, the Koran, the Confucian Classics, and the Vedas, this volume, about the size of the Gospel of Mark, ranks next, or fifth, among the sacred books of the world.

The great value of the book is also apparent when we remember that the Eastern world had been, driven to general despair by the atheistic doctrines of primitive Buddhism, called the Hinayana School, and that it was by the doctrines of. this book, which gave rise to the Mahayana School of New Buddhism, that a gospel of great hope was preached to the greater part of the Eastern Asiatic continent. Its new doctrines were that of the One Soul immanent for good in all the universe, that of a Divine Helper of men, of individual immortalitv and growth in the likeness of God, of the importance of faith in God to produce good works and that of the willingness of the best spirits to make sacrifices to save others—the very subjects which in these modern days still OCCUPY the attention of the most thoughtful men of the world.

The book is Brahministic and Buddhistic, Indian and Western in some aspects of philosophic thought. It is profoundly philosophic, reminding one strongly of Hegel, Berkeley and G. Gore in the earlier part, and is as hard to understand as Bishop Butler’s famous Analogy; yet very practical in the latter part, therefore it has great importance arising from its high and extensive range of view.

If it be, as it is more and more believed that the Mahayana Faith is not Buddhism, properly so-called, but an Asiatic form of the same Gospel of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, in Buddhistic nomenclature, differing from the old Buddhism just as the new Testament differs from the old, then it commands a world-wide interest, for in it we find an adaptation of Christianity to ancient thought in Asia, and the deepest bond of union between the different races of the East and the West, viz., the bond of a common religion. Both Christianity and the New Buddhism hold to the transcendent and the immanent forms of God; but the East emphasi3es more of the immanent form while the West emphasises more of the transcendent. The almost universal reception of the doctrines contained in this book by both the East and the West constitutes to my mind its highest claim to our attention; for thereby we are brought face to face with a solution of the stupendous practical problem of uniting all races in one bond of religious charity!

This work undertakes a detailed study of the nature and rationale of Anitayata the third pillar of Buddhism. It explores into the concerned rationale in its three phases (a) Anityata in general in the sense of permanent susceptibility to change (b) Ksanikata as the adequate condition of the occurrence / cognition of change and (c) Ksanabhanga as the adequate condition of the occurrence cognition of the most radical change. The inquiry into the rationale of Anitayata in its different phases in undertaken with two aims in view (a) To explore into the aspects of Buddhist opposition to permanence and or stability in any form and adopted in anybody Buddhist or non Buddhist and (b) to bring out conceptual change in the Buddhist camp and articulate the way Anityata provided a sound basis for putting forth characteristically Buddhist alternative ontology and or anthropology in opposition ot th eons which were then current opposition to the ones which were then current assessing the significance and importance of it. This study is novel and no one has yet undertaken any of its kind.

Within Buddhist conceptual framework in general and in the world of Buddhist Scholarship in particular the present work is the first full-scale inquiry into the rationale of the acceptance of two important concepts in Buddhist philosophy, viz. Santana and Santanantara. In the work, the rationale of their acceptance and intricate mode of inter-relationship has been explained in great detail. And it has been argued that their acceptance paves way for (a). philosophically satisfactory account of continuity, transformation and transcendence-no matter in case of isolated or inter-related items, and (b) laying foundation of an alternative philosophical psycho- logy in Buddhist Philosophy. It is argued that these features of them hold even in the face of acceptance of complete discreteness and literal momentariness. Assessing pioneering importance of the works of Dharmakirti like the Santanantara-siddhi on these counts, it has been maintained that such an account of continuity, transformation and transcendence on the one hand and adoption of an alternative philosophical psychology on the other has to be embedded in the conception of the three major pillars of Buddhism viz. Duhkha, Anatmata and Anityata together with complex sort of inter-relationship between them. The work, thus, underscores the unmistakable importance of the three pillars under consideration in general and of Anityata in particular in properly under- standing Buddhist ontology, epistemology, anthropology and psychology along with complex inter-relationship between them. This is, further, sought to be done in such a way that philosophically significant account of continuity, transformation etc. does not fail to be available in the Buddhist conceptual framework.

Advaitamoda the fragrance of Advaitamoda by Mahamahopadhyaya Vasudevasastri Abhyankar is a very useful book for understanding the two great Vedanta tradition. Advaita Vedanta and Visistadvaita Vedanta. Advaitamoda contains four chapters The first two chapters present the teachings of Advaita and of Visistadvaita respectively. Then follows a summation of the differences between these two traditions. The third and fourth chapters enter into a detailed critique of the arguments which Ramanuja advanced against Advaita in the LAGKU and Maha-Sidhanta portions of his great work, theSri Bhasya. The procedure followed in these chapters is that a. passage from theSri Bhasya is firstly cited and then taken up for discussion. In the way . most of the Laghu and Mahasidhania portions ofSri Bhasya systematically quoted and discussed. Dr .Michael Oomans, from the Australian National University, who has studied Advaita Vedanta in traditional manner over a number of years, has translated the Advaitamoda from Sanskrit into English. In addition to the translation, he has written a commentary in English upon much of the text, where he explains- and elaborates various topics as they arise. This commentary is very helpful, especially as it provides an accurate and detailed understanding of Advaita Vedanta. This work for all students of Indian Philosophy and especially those who are interested in the Vedanta traditions. The present book contains translation of the Adhyatma Ramayana. The book contains and Introduction. 1. The Bala Kanda. 2. The Ayodhya Kanda. 3. The Aranya Kanda. 4. The Kishkindha Kanda. 5. The Sundara Kanda. 6. The Yuddha Kanda. 7. The Uttara Kanda. Description: One who casually listens to the Adhyatma Ramayana from another without showing reverence, even he is freed from sin. He who bows to the Adhyatma Ramayana, having approached it, obtains the fruit of worshipping all the Gods. This greatness of the Adhyatma side of Rama's deeds was told to the sage Narada by the lotus-seated Brahma. He who reads or listens to it with faith attains to the abode of Vishnu and is worshipped by the Gods.
