                          Description

The Naxalite Movement in India started in 1967 from a small village and gradually spread over large areas of the country, particularly in the states of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and West Bengal. It was described by the UPA government as the biggest threat to the internal security of the country. The movement has since suffered setbacks but nevertheless retains the capacity to launch lethal strikes and continues to pose a formidable challenge to India’s democratic structure.

The Naxalite Movement in India, now in a revised and updated edition, traces the Naxalite movement from its inception to its metamorphosis into a predominantly Maoist movement in a historical sweep.

                              Description

The Mavericks of Mussoorie is an inspiring look at how an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, in his individual capacity, can work to influence and execute policies that make a positive contribution to the country. It is surprisingly honest in its acknowledgement of some of the pitfalls of the system and sets out clearly what needs to be done to bring out the full potential of the Civil Service. In this candid memoir M. Ramachandran opens up on how and why, despite a distinguished career, the post of Cabinet Secretary eluded him. This book unfolds what transpired and reveals what happens behind the scenes in Indian bureaucracy.

‘…a tall, stooping, elderly gentleman sat down beside me. I gave him a quick glance, noting his swarthy features, heavy moustache, and horn-rimmed spectacles. There was something familiar and disturbing about his face, and I couldn’t resist looking at him again.
I noticed that he was smiling at me.’

The Man Who Was Kipling is a collection of stories which should be on the must-read list of every reader. We are introduced to a man in a museum in London who claims to be the ghost of Rudyard Kipling. Then there is a schoolboy’s encounter with a mysterious woman, while waiting for their trains to arrive. We have an inspector pitting his wits against a murder mystery and a writer who always takes the same route into the city to catch a glimpse of a balcony belonging to a past love. And then there is the timeless classic ‘Sita and the River’ that will tug at your heartstrings. Through this collection, Ruskin Bond has us enthralled, yet again, with his effortless storytelling of these tales and more.

The Ramayana and the Mahabharata are the two great epics of India, the Mahabharata being by far the longer. Both were first composed in verse and, coming down the centuries in the ancient oral tradition, have deeply influenced the history, culture and arts of not only the Indian subcontinent but of most of South-East Asia. The Mahabharata tells of a Great War, and the events that lead upto it.

                                      Description

Less than 3000 tigers remain in the wild in India, the Asiatic Lion number an abysmal 300. The fate of the Snow Leopard is unknown, while we lose a leopard a day. With an insatiable curiosity and lavish powers of observation, Prerna Singh Bindra takes us through the vast canvas of the forests of India. Her swathe cuts through the evergreen forests of India’s Northeast, across the grasslands of Central India and the teak forests of the South. The swirling waters of the Sunderbans with its man-eating tigers and associated myths are brought vividly to life. She explores the areas where the legendary hunter Jim Corbett shot his man-eaters, meets the collared tigers of Panna, follows the trail of the elusive Snow Leopard and meets Baby, a leopard raised by the erstwhile royal family of Mysore. Through her veins flows a true love of the wild and this is captured in entrancing detail in this travelogue though the heart of India’s natural world

                                        Description

Jim Corbett’s tales of tiger hunts are legendary. Mostly alone, he would traverse the hills and jungles of India, hunting his quarry using blood trails, examining pug marks and following broken twigs and branches, often putting himself at risk. Later, he became a conservationist, taking up the cause of the endangered royal Bengal tiger.

This comprehensive volume contains some of Jim Corbett’s best-known books and short stories, from The Man-eating Leopard of Rudraprayag, a gripping tale of a notorious leopard, to the fascinating stories in Man-eaters of Kumaon and The Temple Tiger. Showcasing Corbett’s acute awareness of jungle sights and sounds and enlivened by his descriptions of village life, this is a must-read for those interested in wildlife and tiger tales.

                                        AUTHOR OF THE BOOK

Edward James ‘Jim’ Corbett (25 July 1875—19 April 1955) was an Anglo-Indian hunter and tracker-turned-conservationist, author and naturalist, famous for hunting a large number of man-eating tigers and leopards in India. He played a key role in creating a national reserve for the endangered Bengal tiger in what is now Uttarakhand. In 1957 the national park was renamed Jim Corbett National Park in his honour.

The Bhagwadgita comprises seven hundred verses and has guided us over generations. This book focuses on seventy verses, which, the author believes, form the core of what Shri Krishna told Arjun at the Kurukshetra battlefield. Each chapter begins with a Sanskrit verse, which is followed by its literal translation. The wisdom of each of those is then eloquently expounded. This book doesn’t confine itself to explaining the verses and the philosophy of the Bhagwadgita alone; it shows us how to apply these tenets in everyday life through lucid examples. Effectively, it teaches us how to resolve our problems, improve social relations, enrich our souls and make our journey worthwhile.
