In this applique cotton work, Rambhakt Hanuman is painted holding the mountain containing sanjeevani trees with his right hand and his weapon with his other hand. His two-piece drapery is painted yellow and red as the Lord is looking upward. His body is painted black as the devotee of Ram is on his way back from the Himalayas to Lanka to heal an injured Laxman. During the battle against the demon king Ravan, who had abducted Seeta -- wife of Ramchandra -- Laxman was injured severely and following advice from the physician Hanuman flew back to the Himalayas to bring leaves of Sanjeevani. But since Hanuman couldn't identify the tree, he brought an entire portion of mountain where it was grown. This beautiful Gond painting reveals the deep love of the Gond people for nature and their dreams and aspirations. Gonds are one of the biggest tribes in Central India residing mainly in Madhya Pradesh. Rural setting, simple living, love for nature are some of the key motifs that Gond artists depict through their paintings. Birds are symbol of freedom, of peace and prosperity.
