Arjuna, the Peerless Archer - Kalamkari PaintingArjuna, the Peerless Archer - Kalamkari Painting
Arjuna, the Peerless Archer - Kalamkari Painting

The heavily ornate Kalamkari painting shows Arjuna at the Swayambara of Draupadi. Arjuna was one of the heroes of the Hindu epi cMahabharata. His skill in archery was to have an unlikely utility: it won him the hand of Draupadi, his first wife, the daughter of Drupada, king of Panchala. According to Mahabharata a contest was held by Drupada to choose a suitable match for his daughter. A wooden fish was suspended high above a pool of water; furthermore, the fish rotated in a circle. Contestants were required to string a heavy bow and then use it to hit the eye of the rotating fish. They were allowed to take aim at the eye of the fish only by looking at its reflection in the pool of water. Many princes and noblemen vied for the hand of the princess of Panchala, but every one of them was failed except Arjuna, the peerless archer, who alone was able to accomplish the set task; he won the hand of Draupadi. The beautiful painting contains lot of strong lines and drawings. No chemical colours are used in such paintings. Kalamkari art is unique in its use of colour as a medium to portray mythological characters.

Ashta Ganesha Kalamkari Wall PaintingAshta Ganesha Kalamkari Wall Painting
    Ashta Ganesha Kalamkari Wall Painting
The beautiful Kalamkari painting depicts eight forms of Ganesha in a deep sense of simplicity yet devotion. Ashtavinayaka refers to the "eight forms of Ganeshas" in Sanskrit. Lord Ganesha, son of Lord Shiva and Parvati, is the Hindu deity of prosperity and learning. The term refers to eight Ganeshas and Ashtavinayaka yatra refers to a pilgrimage to the eight Hindu temples in Maharashtra. The eight forms of Ganesha include: Mayureshwar, Siddhivinayak, Ballaleshwar, Varadavinayak, Chintamani, Girijatmaj, Vighnahar, Mahaganapati. They are Mayureshwar (Moresh) or the peacock rider, who slew the demon Sindhu following request from the gods. As Mahaganapati, Ganesha comes to the assistance of his father Lord Shiva in destroying the citadels of the demon Tripurasura. As Varadvinayak (the bestower of boons), Lord Ganesha is remembered in a legend related to Rukmangada. Chintamani Vinayak relates to the legend of Kapila Muni and the Chintamani gem that he had obtained from Shiva. Girijaatmaja Vinayaka is enshrined on Lenyadri Parvat, and is believed to be a manifestation of Ganapati as an infant. "Vigneshwara" is regarded as the destroyer of the demon Vignaasura. Ballal Vinayak is associated with a legend where Ganapati is said to have come to the help of a young boy, who was a big evotee of Ganapati. As Siddhi Vinayak, Lord Ganesha is said to have come to the help of Mahavishnu as he was drawn out in a long battle with the demons Madhu and Kaitabha.

Ashta Rupa Ganesha - Kalamkari PaintingAshta Rupa Ganesha - Kalamkari Painting
Ashta Rupa Ganesha - Kalamkari Painting

The eight forms of Lord Ganesha have been vividly portrayed by the Kalamkari artist in a most beautiful manner. Kalamkari is a very popular art form from Andha Pradesh. The enhancing effulgence of colours and the characters that emerge on cotton fabric, help create a resplendent spread in this form of painting. Kalamkari art is unique in its use of colour as a medium to portray various Hindu mythological characters. The Mudgala Purana, an ancient text on Lord Ganesha, cites eight forms of Ganesha, prevailing over eight human weaknesses or demons. Ekadanta is the Conquerer of Moda, arrogance. Dhumravarna (smoke colored) overcomes Abhimana, pride; Vakratunda (curved trunk) is the Vanquisher of Matsarya, jealousy; Mahodara (big belly) is Lord of Moha, infatuation; Gajanana (elephant face) conquers Lobha, greed; Lambodara (corpulent belly) overcomes Krodha, anger; Vikata (deformed) conquers Kama, lust; Vighnaraja (King of Obstacles) prevails over Mamata (egotism). Thus Ganesha is "there" for even the lowest of the low, that there is hope for everyone, and that there really is "no intrinsic evil," only a seeming variation of the past containing all that has to be learned to live and grow from a young soul to an older one and then mature into rishi consciousness. He is "there for us." The Kalamkari art of painting undergoes a laborious, slow process of resist - dyeing and hand printing. Many stages have to be undergone before the final results are achieved. Unlike other styles of painting, Kalamkari painting demands a lot of treatment before and after the painting is completed on the cotton fabric. Depending on the treatment of cloth, or quality of the mordant, the colours change accordingly. Every step from soaking of the cloth, to sketching the outlines to washing and drying the cloth, is done carefully and correctly. The use natural dyes, extracted from bark, flower and root. Thus the colour red is obtained by using the Indian madder root, yellow from the pomegranate seed or even mango bark, and black from myrobalam fruit. No chemical dyes are used is producing Kalamkari colours! From whitening the cloth in a particular solution to the final painting, it is a labourious process and the artist has to put up lot of effort.
