Writing The EpicWriting The Epic
Writing The Epic

The beautiful image of Lord Ganesha is nicely carved out of soft pink stone from Orissa. The Lord of Learning and the Patron Deity of letters and scriptures, is shown writing the epic Mahabharata attentively with his tusk. When Vyasa wanted to compose the Mahabharata, Brahma suggested Him that Ganesha be his scribe. Vyasa agreed and Ganesha brought his broken tusk as a writing quill. Vyasa dictated the entire epic in verse. Ganesha recorded every word for Gods and men alike. Scholars, both mythical and historical, explain that this is so because, before undertaking to do the work, Ganesha stipulated that the dictation should never falter and that he should, at all times, be able to understand what was being said. Thus, it is not strange that such a conscientious god is propitiated by all and sundry.

Yaksas
Yaksas

Particular significance attaches to Yaksas in Indian mythology, religion and art. Their almost universal presence in the earlier Indian religions, Hindu, Buddhist and Jaina, wherein they are invested with peculiar traits and powers, indicates their importance.

Ananda Coomaraswamy's Yaksas is an attempt at bringing together the mass of information from literary and monumental sources about Yaksas and Yaksis, their origin, and development from the conceptual, mythological and iconographical points of view. Coomaraswamy has shown how this non-and pre-Aryan "animistic" concept originated and, in the historical times, dovetailed with the Hindu, Buddhist and Jaina religious systems to the extent that the concept of Yaksattva got closely bound up with the idea of reincarnation.

In the preparation of this monograph, Coomaraswamy has extensively drawn upon the sectarian and semi-secular literature and has shown unmistakable evidences of the Yaksas' once honourable status, their benevolence toward men and the affection felt by men toward them. Coomaraswamy begins by tracing the origin of the word yaksa which is first found in Jaiminiya Brahmana, where it means nothing more than 'a wondrous thing.' In course of time Yaksas and Yaksis are often mentioned and their names are found in the Epics, Buddhist and Jaina works and even in sculpture. In Jaina books Yakkhas are often called Devas, where, as Sasana Devatas they are usually guardian angels. In Buddhist works they are sometimes represented as teachers of good morals and as guardian spirits.

Of equal importance are the Yaksas and Yaksis in early Indian art and in the early examples (Bharhut, Sanci, Gandhara, etc.) they are frequently represented as Atlantes, supporters of buildings and superstructures. The early iconography of Yaksas, again, seems to have formed the foundation of later Hindu and Buddhist iconography. Coomaraswamy has traced a kind of Bhakti cult centering round the worship of Yaksas on the basis of the Yaksa caityas, the offerings to the Yaksas and has tried to show that the facts of Yaksa worship correspond almost exactly with those of other Bhakti religions.

"Coming as it does from the pen of Ananda Coomaraswamy, this brilliant monograph is the acme of scholarship and brilliance and provides a mass of well-documented information. The work is divided into the two parts, an Appendix giving Tale of a Yaksa found in the Divyavadana, alongwith 73 plates.

      Description

What happens when a clone of Yamraj, the Lord of Death, gets emotional and upsets the power structure in Devlok, the realm of Gods?

Yamraj Number 5003 is the story of one of the thousands of cloned Yamrajs in Mrityuloka. The Yamrajs are supposed to carry out their duties like robots, but by some fluke one Yamraj—code-named #5003—has a ‘manufacturing defect’ by which he can think and feel, making him ‘different’. He begins to question the status quo, shaking the very foundation of the power structure in Devlok, making the divine trinity—Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwar—jittery. What happens when they decide to take action against the erring Yamraj? Woven with humour, this multilayered novel will move the readers as well as entertain them. Yoga Guru Maharishi Patanjali - Brass StatuetteYoga Guru Maharishi Patanjali - Brass Statuette
Yoga Guru Maharishi Patanjali - Brass Statuette

The beautiful brass figure of Maharshi Patanjali is given a detail and refine treatment.
Patañjali is known to be an incarnation of Adi S'esha who is the first ego-expansion of Vishnu, Sankarshana. Sankarshana, the manifestation of Vishnu His primeval energies and opulences, is part of the so-called catur vyuha, the fourfold manifestation of Vishnu. Thus may Patañjali be considered as the one incarnation of God defending the ego of yoga.
There is an interesting story about his birth.
There was a great Yogini called Gonika, who was praying for a worthy son to transmit her knowledge. Patanjali, as a tiny snake, fell from the heavens into her palms as her reward. So he came to be known as Patanjali. 'Pata' means to fall and 'Anjali' is hands cupped in prayer.
Yoga Sutra is also credited to Patanjali. He is always depicted as a four-armed man up to the waist, after which his body becomes a great serpentine triple coil. The triple coil of the body represents the dormant Kundalini Shakti, the primal energy of creation. Two hands in the rear, symbolizing spiritual attributes, hold up the emblems of Vishnu, the conch and the discus. His front hands are folded in Anjali mudra more commonly known as the Namaste, India's ancient and powerful spiritual greeting. The serpent hoods forming a royal umbrella over his head are normally seven in number, signifying his transcendence of the Five Elements and the achievement of Enlightenment and Liberation. The snake rises along the back of the spine as the Kundalini energy does when it is activated. When the Kundalini reaches the chakra above the head in the etheric body, full Enlightenment and Liberation is achieved.

      Yoga Guru Patanjali
In this small figure of Yogaguru Patanjali, Orissa soft stone is used giving it a nice touch. It is not in a single piece of stone. As a number of stones are put together to create the figure. Patanjali, the great yoga acharya is also believed to be an incarnation of Adishesa, who is the first ego-expansion of Vishnu, the manifestation of Vishnu. His primeval energies and opulences, is part of the so-called catur vyūha, the fourfold manifestation of Vishnu. Thus may Patañjali be considered as the one incarnation of God defending the ego of yoga. Patanjali is the compiler of the Yoga Sutras, a major work containing articles on the philosophical aspects of mind and consciousness. He is also the author of a major commentary on Panini's Ashtadhyayi. Yoga Sutra has of late become quite popular across the globe for the precepts regarding practice of Raja Yoga and its philosophical basis. "Yoga" in traditional Hinduism involves inner contemplation, a rigorous system of meditation practice, ethics, metaphysics, and devotion to the one common soul, God, or Brahman. He was a great Natya dancer and is revered by the exponents of classical Indian dance as their patron saint.

Yoga Statue of Guru Patanjali - Stone StatueYoga Statue of Guru Patanjali - Stone Statue
Yoga Statue of Guru Patanjali - Stone Statue

The beautiful stone figure depicts Patanjali as the Adishesha. Patanjali, apart from being the Yogacharya, is also known as the Adishesha, which can be understand as "the primordial snake" or the primordial form of Lord Vishnu.

In Hindu mythology Adishesha, sometimes also known as "Ananta" (The Endless One), is the thousand-headed ruler of the Nagas, the serpent race that is thought to guard the hidden treasures of the earth. Since yogic knowledge is the ultimate the secret treasure, many yogins still bow to Adishesha before beginning their daily yoga practice. "Salutation to the king of the Nagas, to the infinite, to the bearer of the mandala, who spreads out this universe with thousands of hooded heads, set with blazing, effulgent jewels."

Here the body of patanjali is shown as being coiled to form an expansive comfortable couch on which the god Vishnu rests and reclines during the intervals of creation. The serpent's thousand heads symbolize infinity or omnipresence. These heads reach up and out like a protective canopy or umbrella over Vishnu and on that "umbrella" rests our earth.

The snake's body is soft and gentle enough to serve as a couch for a god and at the same time, firm and steady enough to support the whole earth. We endeavor to bring both of these same qualities to our asana practice : softness, comfort and ease(sukha) must be balanced with firmness, strength and steadiness of effort (sthira).

Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, Vol. 2 (Sadhana-Pada)
Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, Vol. 2 (Sadhana-Pada)

The Yoga-Sutra is a significant landmark in the protracted evolution of the yogic tradition. It formed the foundation text for an extensive commentarial literature stretching from the Yoga-Bhasya of Vyasa to modern traditionalist interpretations in Hindi and other Indic vernaculars as well as various European languages, notably English.

The present volume by Swami Veda Bharati provides a learned commentary on the second chapter of the Yoga-Sutra i.e., Sadhana Pada. This contains the core of Patanjali’s philosophical and meta-psychological framework, and it also defines both the components of kriya-yoga and the first five components of eight limbed astanga-yoga. This chapter demonstrates very clearly that in Yoga, theory and practice form a homogenous whole. The theoretical concepts were largely distilled from practical experience and, in turn, informed further experimentation on the path. How could we hope to travel the path mapped out by Patanjali without recourse to such pregnant concepts as citta, vrtti, pratyaya, samskara, vasana, asaya, nirodha, parinama, guna, pratiprasava? All these ideas were shaped in the intense practice environment of Yoga over many generations.

Swami Veda Bharati brings to his exegesis a singular sensitivity and wonderful comprehension of yogic concepts, which are rooted in his extensive traditional training as a Sanskrit scholar and also his personal yogic practice. This latest contribution to our comprehension of Patanjali’s teachings takes us a lot further than other similar endeavors.
