The brass lamp is nicely designed with minute details and smoothness. People consider lighting a lamp or deepam an auspicious task. It is said that lighting a deepam wards off evil spirits from the home. People lit lamps in front of god, some people lit lamps in front of Tulasi. Light symbolises knowledge over darkness, ignorance. The Lord is the Knowledge Principle (chaitanya) who is the source, the enlivener and the illuminator of all knowledge. So, light is worshiped as the Lord himself. Deepam is full of symbolism. It means that if you have faith, you’ll see God. Deepam (lamp) = body, wick = guru, oil = faith, light = God.
