"ग़ज़ल के इतिहास में जाने की ज़रूरत मैं महसूस नहीं करता। साहित्य की हर विधा अपनी बात और उसे कहने के ढब से, संस्कारों से फ़ौरन पहचानी जाती है। ग़ज़ल की तो यह ख़ासियत है। आप उर्दू जानें या न जानें, पर ग़ज़ल को जान भी लेते हैं और समझ भी लेते हैं। जब 13वीं सदी में, आज से सात सौ साल पहले हिन्दी खड़ी बोली के बाबा आदम अमीर खुसरो ने खड़ी बोली हिन्दी की ग़ज़ल लिखी: जब यार देखा नयन भर दिल की गई चिंता उतर, ऐसा नहीं कोई अजब राखे उसे समझाय कर। जब आँख से ओझल भया, तड़पन लगा मेरा जिया, हक्का इलाही क्या किया, आँसू चले भर लाय कर। तू तो हमारा यार है, तुझ पर हमारा प्यार है, तुझे दोस्ती बिसियार है इक शब मिलो तुम आय कर। जाना तलब तेरी करूं दीगर तलब किसकी करूं, तेरी ही चिंता दिल धरूं इक दिन मिलो तुम आय कर। तो ग़ज़ल का इतिहास जानने की ज़रूरत नहीं थी। अमीर खुसरो के सात सौ साल बाद भी बीसवीं सदी के बीतते बरसों में जब दुष्यंत ने ग़ज़ल लिखी : कहाँ तो तय था चिरागाँ हरेक घर के लिए, कहाँ चिराग़ मय्यसर नहीं शहर के लिए। तब भी इतिहास को जानने की ज़रूरत नहीं पड़ी। जो बात कही गयी, वह सीधे लोगों के दिलो-दिमाग़ तक पहुँच गयी। और जब 'अदम' गोंडवी कहते हैं : ग़ज़ल को ले चलो अब गाँव के दिलकश नज़रों में, मुसलसल फ़न का डीएम घुटता है इन अदबी इदारों में। तब भी इस कथन को समझने के लिए इतिहास को तकलीफ़ देने की ज़रूरत नहीं पड़ती। ग़ज़ल एकमात्र ऐसी विधा हजो किसी ख़ास भाषा के बंधन में बँधने से इंकार करती है। इतिहास को ग़ज़ल की ज़रूरत है, ग़ज़ल को इतिहास की नहीं। इसलिए यह संकलन अभी अधूरा है। ग़ज़ल की तूफ़ानी रचनात्मक बाढ़ को संभाल सकना सम्भव नहीं है। शेष-अशेष अगले संकलनों में। - कमलेश्वर "
