Indian Tree of Life - Kalamkari PaintingIndian Tree of Life - Kalamkari Painting
Indian Tree of Life - Kalamkari Painting

The ever growing Tree of Life is given a minute and detail treatment in this beautiful Kalamkari painting. The painting speaks of our life. As its branches are spreading so is our life. We come across new people making our life more enriched and fruitful. The enhancing effulgence of colours and the characters that emerge on cotton fabric, help create a resplendent spread. Kalamkari art is unique in its use of colour as a medium to portray mythological characters. As the name suggests, Kalamkari is the art of painting cotton fabrics with a kalam i.e. pen, a sharp pointed pierced bamboo that regulates flow of colour on the fabric. The popularity of this exquisite form of art crossed the shores of the country during the 17th and 18th centuries. Kalahasti and Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh, the nerve centres of this art continue to be beehives of Kalamkari activity. Kalamkari colours are made from vegetable dyes.

    Description:

So you think you know all about India…its ancient history, its glorious heritage, its jaw-dropping wonders? Well, think again.

Take architecture, building and town planning for instance. Do you know about the world’s biggest domical roof? The world’s largest monolithic statue? The world’s biggest sundial? Do you know about the hanging ceiling? The pillar without a foundation? Or about a model town 1,000 years ago? Medieval flush system latrines? And of concealed plumbing in ancient India?

Or take literature. Do you know about the man who told two stories using one text? The oldest grammar book? The world’s longest poem? Or, for that matter, of poet Magha’s geometrical composition?

In medicine, chances are you haven’t heard about incredible ancient surgical instruments. Or about the artificial nose created 2000 years ago. Or the curative sounds of the medicated drum.

In science and technology, did you know of robots that existed 1000 years ago? Or the pillar that has defied rust for 1600 years? Of the journey from zero to infinity? Of the ancient technique of drilling pinholes in stones?

      Indigo
      Indigo
Spine-tingling tales from the other side of midnight. Indigo is the mood in this new collection of stories about the supernatural, the peculiar and the inexplicable from Satyajit Ray, one of the best-loved writers of our times. There are tales here of dark horror, fantasy and adventure along with heart-warmingly funny stories about ordinary people in extraordinary situations. In 'Big Bill' Tulsi Babu picks up a newly-hatched chick from a forest and brings it home only to find it growing bigger and fiercer by the day; in 'Khagam' a man kills a sadhu's deadly pet snake and invites a curse which brings about horrifying changes in his body; and in the title story, a young executive resting in an old abandoned bungalow for a night, finds himself caught up in a chilling sequence of events which occurred more than a century ago. Also included here is 'The Magical Mystery', a brand new Feluda story discovered amongst Ray's papers after his death, and several tales featuring Uncle Tarini, the master storyteller who appears in translation for the first time. From Mr. Shasmal, who is visited one night by all the creatures he has ever killed, to Ashamanja Babu, who does not know what to do when his pet dog suddenly begins to laugh, the unforgettable characters in these stories surprise, shock and entertain us in equal measure. Indigo is a veritable treasure trove especially for those who like a taste of the unusual in a short story and an unexpected twist at the end. Translated from the Bengali by the author and Gopa Majumdar.

Indra and Shibi - Paperback Comic
Indra and Shibi - Paperback Comic
Lord Indra, king of the heavens, has been a formidable presence in Hindu scriptures from Vedic times to the medieval ages. Yet, his importance gradually diminished over the centuries. The Vedic Indra, wielder of the thunderbolt, was among the most important deities, but by the puranic period, he became a mere vassal of the holy trinity of Braham, Vishnu and Shiva.
In the Puranas, the heaven over which Indra ruled is referred to as Indraloka or Devaloka and is inhabited by the devas, the secondary deities. His city is Amaravati; his elephant, the four-tusked Airavata; and his horse, Uchchaishravas.
Stories like the ones included in this collection, which depict India as a benign and noble deity, are rare. Most of the stories in the Puranas depict Indra as a deity jealous of mortals who performed tapas (austerities) or yajnas (fire sacrifices). This was because, according to Puranic lore, the Position of Indra could be attained by anyone who performed a hundred Ashwamedha Yajnas.
All the stories in this collection are based on the Mahabharata. The story of Shibi is similar to the one narrated in the Mahabharata about Ushinara, his father.

The Secret of Success: The Story of Indra Nooyi gives us a rare insight into Nooyi's life, her childhood, the choices she made, the struggles she faced and the lessons she learnt on her way to the top.
