DESCRIPTION:

                          Description:

Kamayani (1936) is a Hindi epic poem (Mahakavya) by Jaishankar Prasad (1889-1937). It is considered one of the greatest literary works written in modern times in Hindi literature. It also signifies the epitome of Chhayavadi school of Hindi poetry which gained popularity in late 19th and early 20th centuries. Kamayani depicts the interplay of human emotions, thoughts, and actions by taking mythological metaphors. Kamayani has personalities like Manu, Ida and Sraddha who are found in the Vedas. The great deluge described in the poem has its origin in Satapatha Brahmana.

                          Kamba Ramayana
                          Kamba Ramayana
A masterly translation of the Tamil version of Ramayana The epic story of Rama, which is part of the Indian collective consciousness, has been retold in many regional languages. Pre-eminent among the many vernacular retellings of the Ramayana is the twelfth-century Tamil version by Kamban. The son of a temple drummer, Kamban is reputed to have had an impressive mastery of Tamil and Sanskrit classics. Fascinated by the lore of Ramayana, he immersed himself totally in it. Though Kamban acknowledges his indebtedness to the Sanskrit version of the Ramayana by Valmiki, his is an independent work, enriched by various religious, philosophical and literary influences. The Kamba Ramayana differs from Valmiki’s in significant ways. Though cast in the heroic mould of a Purushotama or ‘the best among men’, Valmiki’s Rama is still a man. Kamban, on the other hand, never allows the reader to forget the godhood of Rama. His Ravana too, though flawed, is a heroic figure. While Valmiki’s diction is sparse and direct, Kamban’s exuberant prose sparkles with wit and inventiveness. Translated into English by the late P.S. Sundaram, this edition has been abridged and edited by his long-time friend N.S. Jagannathan. Though pared down from the original six volumes to a single one, this translation retains the magic and poetry of the original.

Kannagi, a gem of housewife, a ‘paragon of chastity’, has been immortalized in the pages of silappadikaaram, the famous Tamil epic of Ilango, the Chera prince-turned-ascetic.

An ill-fated housewife, Kannagi loses her husband, Kovalan, to the art of a dancer, Madhavi, and finds him again only to lose him to the blind low of a king. Her story is set in the three ancient cities of South India – Poompuhhar, the Chola capital where she grew up; Madurai, the Pandya cpital where she fell; and Vanji, the Chera capital which placed her on a pedestal.

The epic is a rich record of a great civilization, vivid with descriptions of edifices, shrines, docks, market-places, squares; of laws and rituals, of Natya Shastra (the science of dance), musicology and musical instruments of the day. Known for its high dramatic content, Silappadikaaram is a shining jewel in Tamil literature.

Te Tamil Nadu Government has recently perpetuated the memory of Ilanga and his immortal classic by erecting at Kaveripattinam, a magnificent seven-storeyed art gallery called Silappadikaaram Kalaikoodam in ancient Dravidian architectural style. The structure narrates the story of Kannagi in stone carvings.

Young Moorthy, back from the city, brimming with new ideas, seeks to cut across ancient barriers and unite the villagers in non-violent action. The story emerges through the eyes of a delightful old woman, who comments on the villagers’ actions with sharp-eyed wisdom, evoking the spirit of India’s traditional folk epics.

Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay (1838-1894) is considered to be one of the greatest writers of Bengali literature. He wrote Kapala Kundala, his second novel, when he was only 28 years old.

It is said that when Bankim Chandra lived in Kanthi, on the coast of southwest Bengal, a kapalik (a Tantric worshipper of Kali or Shiva) frequently visited him. The mystery surrounding the kapalik made a deep impression on Bankim. He conceived the idea of writing a novel about a girl brought up by a kapalik in complete isolation from the civilised world.

The name Kapala Kundala has been taken from the Sanskrit play, Malati-Madhva. In the play, Kapala is the associate of the evil kapalik, Aghora Ghanta, and she is as heinous as her mentor. But although our heroine in Kapala Kundala was also brought up by an evil kapalik, she is full human affection and kindness.

                                                                            About the Book

In the Hindu tradition Kapila is admired and worshipped as a philosopher, a divinity, an avatara of Visnu and as a powerful ascetic. This book is the first monographic study of this important figure. The book deals with Kapila in the Veda, the Sramana traditions, the Epics and the Puranas, in the Samkhya system of religious thought and in the ritual traditions of many contemporary Hindu traditions. Kapila is an important figure in the sacred geography of India and the study of the rituals and narrative traditions of the firthas of Kapila is an important contribution of this book. The book also contains a translation into English of the text Kapilasurisamvada, Kapila's teaching of Asuri, found in a few manuscripts of the Southern recension of the Mahabharata.

Kapila refers to a pluralistic phenomenon. The Kapilas in the Hindu tradition can't be reduced to a single figure. In general, pluralism characterizes the religious traditions and religious life in South Asia, ancient, medieval, modern as well as contemporary. Openness for the greatest possible plurality is therefore often a good way to approach religion in South Asia. This is the case also with the study of Kapila. The approach of the book therefore is pluralistic.
