Description

Lord Krishna is one of the most revered and loved Hindu deity. He is the hero of the epic Hindu text, Mahabharta, and is shown here as playing the flute. He was brought up by his foster father, King Nanda, who was the leader of cowherds. Shown here, behind Lord Krishna is a cow, one of the several he used to charm with the divine music from his flute.

A rare depiction of the universal form of Lord Vishnu, the Patachitra painting shows the overarching power of the Lord Vishnu. When at the battle of Kurukshetra, a hesitant Arjuna didn’t want to raise arms against his kith and kin. Krishna convinced him that we are all to bear the fruits of our action in previous life. He talks about his incarnation to save his devotees from the evil forces. When an inquisitive Arjuna asked Krishna to show His universal form, Krishna appeared in His Vishnu form, with omnipotent, omnipresent powers.
The Lord Krishna in this beautiful Patachitra painting is painted blue that denotes His divine origin. The Lord is overpowering a demon as the cow looks on. His headgear is given a refine treatment. Beautiful tree is marked by nice design. A popular style of painting from Orissa, Patachitra paintings exhibit the use of strong line and brilliant colors. Mythological motifs are brilliantly used in Patachitra genre of painting. This genre of ethnic painting was born out of the cult of God Jagannath, the presiding deity of Orissa temple. Spectacular pictorial conceptions, characteristic conventions and vibrant color patterns make the Patachitra a unique treasure in the rich coffer of Indian ethnic art. Primarily executed on cloth, using natural colors, these ethnic paintings have charmed admirers across the globe.
