Description

The Kalamkari painting depicts Lord Murugan, the son of Lord Shiva in a nice way. Lord Murugan, son of Lord Shiva is especially popular among the Tamil population of South India. There is an ancient anecdote about the origin of Murugan. When Sati, the consort of Shiva immolated herself at the Daksha Yagna she was later reborn as Uma, or Parvati the daughter of the mountain king Himavaan (the Himalayas). Depressed over the loss of Sati, Lord Shiva engaged himself in yogic meditation in the Himalayas. However, in the meantime, a demon named Surapadman wraught havoc on earth causing untold miseries to human beings. The gods realised that only the son born of Shiva could lead the gods to triumph over Tarakasuran, Surapadman and their companions. As a result, they plotted with Kamadeva, to persuade Shiva and shoot a flower arrow at Shiva, when he was engrossed in deep meditation. The trick worked. When Kama shot his arrow, Mahadev opened his third eye and burned Kama to ashes instantly. The fire from Shiva's third eye were hard to extinguish and it was then carried by the river Ganges into the Saravana forest. There the fire was brought to a pond called Saravana Poigai. Out of the fire were born six children of Lord Shiva. Parvati combined these six babies into one with six faces, i.e. Shanmukha or Arumugan or Murugan. Murugan became the general of the demi-gods and led the gods to victory against the demons.

The awe-inspiring brass figure of Narasimha, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu, is minutely treated with some dazzling carvings on it. In Narasimha Avatar, Lord Vishnu appears as a semi-man, semi-lion in this world. The demon king Hiranyakasyapa, wanted to become immortal and wanted to remain young forever. He meditated for Lord Brahma and because of his severe penance the gods were frightened and asked Brahma to pacify the king. Lord Brahma, on the other hand, was impressed by his austerity and granted him a boon. The boon was that HiranyaKasyapa would neither killed by a man or beast, nor in daylight or at night and neither inside or outside a building. Having obtained the wish he considered himself the supreme God and prohibited all types of worship of gods. But his son Prahlada was a great devotee of Vishnu. This enraged Hiranyakasyapa very much. He tried numerous ways to kill Prahlada including asking his sister Holika to sit with Prahlada in the fire. But the great devotee of Vishnu escaped unhurt. Enraged, frustrated once he asked Prahlad to show him where Lord Vishnu resides. Prahlad said, "He is everywhere". Further enraged, Hiranyakasyapa knocked down a pillar, and asked if Lord was present there. Lord Vishnu then emerged as a half lion, half man from the pillar, which was neither inside the house nor outside, and the time was evening, neither night nor day. He then killed Hiranyakasyapa thus saving the life of his devotee Prahlada. The anecdote of Prahlad is revered in great reverence by the Hindus and has been inspiring them a lot.

Lord Narasimha - The Man-Lion Incarnation of Vishnu

The beautiful brass figure shows Narasimha, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, killing Hiranyakashipu on His lap.
Narasimha (‘man-lion’) is described as an incarnation (avatara) of Vishnu within the Puranic texts of Hinduism who takes the form of half-man / half-lion He has a human torso and lower body, but with a lion-like face and claws. He is worshipped in deity form by a significant number of Vaishnava groups throughout India (especially in the South) and is primarily known as the 'Great Protector', being a form of Vishnu who specifically defends and protects his devotees in times of need.
According to Puranic traditions, in his previous avatar of (Varaha), Vishnu killed a rakshasa known as Hiranyaksha. Hiranyaksha's brother Hiranyakashipu, greatly angered by this, started to abhor Lord Vishnu and His followers. After years of great austerity and penance, he could please Brahma and the latter offers him a special boon.
The boon was that neither man, nor beast nor weapon could kill him; nor would he die indoors or outdoors. Endowed with this boon, he assumed total invincibility and conquered the earth and the nether worlds. Intoxicated by his victory, he declared himself as the lord of the universe, and directed his subjects to worship none other than himself.
The only one of his subjects to defy his orders was his own son Prahlada, a staunch devotee of Vishnu. Hiranyakashipu tried his level best to convince Prahlad, and then to kill him indirectly. However, none worked. Finally he challenged him to show him Narayana, whom he worshipped so fervently. Prahlada insisted that Vishnu was omnipresent and that there was no need to show him. An enraged Hiranyakashipu broke open a pillar in front of him, to disprove his son's assertion, and out of this pillar sprang out Narasimha, the man-lion form of Vishnu, who killed him on his doorstep, placing him on his lap.
