DESCRIPTION:

New Reformatted Edition, Mahatma Gandhi's life was an experiment with truth. Put your principles to real practice, this was his message to the contemporary world. To him God was Truth and Truth was God. Here are essays and reflections on Mahatma Gandhi, one of the outstanding personalities not only of our time but of all times. Gandhiji was the greatest moral force in Indian history. For the accomplishment of liberty, justice and peace, he rediscovered the old techniques of Ahimsa and Satyagraha. He revealed to the masses a power not of rifles and machine guns, but the power innate in each individual, a power which this war-haunted world can exploit fully in making wars impossible. This book contains tribute to the Father of the Nation, from prominent thinkers like C. Fandrews, Aldous Huxley, Lin Yutang, A. Coomaraswamy, Sri Aurobindo and many others. Some of Gandhiji's most distinct and famous speeches are brought together in an appendix in this volume.

Mahatma Gandhi - The Early Days
“I never saw Gandhi…I do not know his language. I never set foot in his country and yet, I feel the some sorrow as if I had lost someone near and dear,” wrote the Frenchman leon blum, when he heard of Mahatma Gandhi’’s death. Million felt the same, not only in India but the world over, for Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) was the only leader in modern history who strove to rule not en, but the hearts of men.

Mahatma Gandhi needs no introduction, nor does the magnanimity of his personality. With the principles of ahimsa (non-violence) and satya (truth), the cornerstones of his ideals, ingrained in his consciousness from childhood Gandhiji’s life is a lesson in quiet determination, unfaltering faith and profound values.

In the legendary words of Mahatma Gandhi himself:
“…for me the road to salvation lies through incessant toil in the service of my country and therefore of humanity.”
“…I recognize no God except the God that is to be found in the hearts of the dumb millions.”
“…how con I talk of God to the millions who have to go without two meals a day? To them, God can only appear as bread and butter.”
“…I may live without air and water, but not without Him. You may pluck out my eyes, but that will not kill mi. you may chop off my nose, but that will not kill me. But blast my belief in God and I am dead.”

Did Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi ever play cricket? Did cricket ever figure in the Gandhian world of thought? What were the views of the most important man in the history of Indias freedom struggle on the game that dominates Indian national consciousness in the twenty-first century? Were there any connections between Gandhi and cricket during the high tide of national movement? Did Gandhi or his ideas make any impact on the game? Did he ever oppose the cause of cricket? Did cricket ever invoke Gandhi after his death? These questions seem as remote as Gandhis tryst with cricket! Mahatma on the Pitch tries to find answers to these apparently quirky questions by exploring the untold relationship between two of the most enduring phenomena of modern India: Mahatma Gandhi, arguably the greatest Indian icon of the twentieth century and Indian cricket, probably the most assertive Indian national emblem in the twenty-first-century world.

Bapu had failed to convince two people in his lifetime, one was Jinnah and the other was Harilal. This novel was simultaneously serialized in the Sunday supplements of three Gujarati Dailies: Sam Kaleen of Bombay, Jansatta of Ahmedabad and Loksatta of Vadodra. In this book the author tries to make an ardent effort to understand yet another enigmatic facet of human life. The tussle between the father and the son was the most poignant and pathetic story of their lives. When Gandhi, who was busy attending meetings and conferences where the fate of forty crore Indians was to be decided often found headline in a newspaper screaming -Police Arrested Drunk Harilal For Creating A Scene On The Road and sometimes Harilal himself from the dais of the fundamentalist Muslim organization's meeting -'I shall continue fighting till Ba and Bapu embrace Islam.'

Saktism, the concept of Śakti, the source of all energies of the Universe plays a vital role in the socio-religious tradition of India since the dawn of human civilization. Mahiṣāsuramardinī, the Divine Mother is one of the manifestations of Śakti. She is the most impressive and formidable goddess of the Hindu pantheon. The cult of Mahiṣāsuramardinī is of considerable antiquity. Its genesis can be traced from the Vedic literature. The Mahabharat and the Purāṇas have provided varied but vivid accounts of the origin of the goddess. The author besides emphasizing on the descriptions of the deity as per the Puranic texts, has also discussed the emergence and representation of the goddess who has occupied a prominent place in the sculptural history of India through the ages.

Here the author presents a rich and variegated picture of the Mahiṣāsuramardinī art of Orissa, highlighting the evolving iconography of individual images with special reference to the Śilpa and Tantric Texts. He focuses on different forms and depictions of the goddess. In this work the generalization and characteristics have been drawn on the basis of iconographic, ritualistic and comparative studies. The book also incorporates the genesis of Śakti cult, historical development, ritualistic patterns along with the elements of art and aesthetic in Mahiṣāsuramardinī images. The work abounds in photographs revealing the variety forms of the goddess and provides many maps, diagrams and iconographical charts, yantras, mudras etc which will create interest not only for the scholars of archeology, history and religion but also for the historians of art as well.

His father Rambha, king of the demons, once fell in love with a water buffalo, and Mahishasur was born out of this union. So, he could change himself between human and buffalo form at will (mahisha means "buffalo"). Through intense prayers to Brahma, Mahishasura had the boon that he could not be defeated by any man or god. By virtue of this power, he invaded the gods, who went for help to the supreme trinity (Brahma, Vishnu, and Rudra), but Mahishashura defeated all of the gods including the trinity themselves. He unleashed a reign of terror on earth, heaven and the nether worlds.

Finally, the trinity bestowed a dazzling beam of energy upon The Goddess Trinity, transforming her into the goddess. Thus was born Durga. Her face was sculpted by Shiva, torso by Indra, breasts by Chandra (the moon), teeth by Brahma, bottom by the Earth, thighs and knees by Varuna (wind), and her three eyes by Agni (fire). Each god also gave her their own most powerful weapons, Rudra's trident, Vishnu's discus, Indra's thunderbolt, Brahma's kamandal, Kuber's gada etc. Himalayas gifted her a fierce white tiger. On the end of the eighth and beginning of the ninth day of waxing moon, Chanda and Munda came to fight the goddess. She turned blue with anger and goddess Chamunda leaped out of her third eye. Her form was the most powerful one with 3 red eyes, blood-filled tongue and dark skin; who finally killed the twin demons with her sword. This form of the divine goddess is worshipped during the sandhikshan of Durga Puja festival, as sandhi/chandi puja. Finally on the tenth day of waxing moon, goddess Durga killed Mahishasura with her trident.

A paradigm of the victory of the good over the evils, the tribal folkart figurine is a fine repository of the Indian tribal culture and traditions. Goddess Durga was born out the collective energies of all the leading gods and goddesses to kill the demon Mahishasura who conquered the three worlds. The figure has been brought out in the lost wax casting method which reveals a deeper sense of artistry and skill of the Adivasi Murtikar (tribal sculptor).
