About Author:

John A. Grimes received his B.A. in Religion from the University of California at Santa Barbara and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Madras in Indian philosophy. He has taught at universities in India, Canada, Singapore, and the United States. His book publications include: The Vivekacudamani: Sankaras Crown Jewel of Discrimination; A Concise Dictionary of Indian Philosophy; Ganapati: Song of the Self; Problems and Perspectives in Religious Discourse: Advaita Vedanta Implications; Sapta Vidha Anupapatti: The Seven Great Untenables; and The Naiskarmyasiddhi of Suresvara: A Monograph. He currently spends his time between California and Chennai.

The text translated here is an historical find: an unknown commentary on the Yoga sutra-s of Patanjali by Sankara, the most eminent philospher of ancient India. Present indications are that it is likely to be authentic, which would date it about AD 700.

Description

The great devotee of Lord Ramchandra, namely Hanuman was one of the most worshipped Gods in Hinduism. He is the symbol of strength, power and devotion. The figure shows a deep sense of devotion and piety. It contains some exquisite carvings and designs. It is believed that worshipping Lord Hanuman removes all our obstacles. And this is why he is called Sankat moc-han.

The beautiful image of Hanuman is given a royal and detail treatment in the Patachitra painting. The many headed Hanuman is shown trampling over the demons in Lanka, where he went in search of Sita Devi. The figure shows a fine treatment of pattern and colours. Derived from the Sanskrit words patta (a piece of cloth), chitra (painting or picture), Patachitra is a folk art form drawn on a piece of silk, cotton or any other fabric, portraying traditional motifs and imageries of religion and society.

This volume brings together eight contributions of Professor Madhav M. Deshpande relating to the historical sociolinguistics of sanskrit and Prakrit languages. The studies brought together here represent his continuing research in this field after his 1979 book: Sociolinguistic Attitudes in India: An Historical Reconstruction.
