Thirteenth century Sufi Poet mystic, and legal scholar Muhyi al-Din ibn al-Arabi gave deep and sustained attention to gender as integral to questions of human existence and moral personhood. Reading his work through a critical feminist lens, Sa’diyya Shaikh open fertile spaces in which new and creative encounters with gender justice in Islam can take place. Grounding her work in Islamic epistemology Shaikh attends to the ways in which in which Sufi metaphysics and theology might allow for fundamental shifts in Islamic gender ethics and legal formulation addressing wide ranging contemporary challenges including question of women right in marriage and divorce the politics of velling and women leadership of ritual prayers.

Sheikh deftly deconstructed traditional binaries between the spiritual and the political private conceptions of spiritual development and public notions of social justice, and the realms of inner refinement and those of communal virtue. Drawing on the treasured works of suffism, sheikh raises a number of critical question about the nature of selfhood subjectivity spirituality and society to contribte richly to the prospects of Islamic feminism as well as feminist ethics more broadly.

About the Author

Hailing from Allahabad. Sri Bankey Behari started life as a lawyer as a junior of Dr. K. N. Katju and later practised law independently. He was engaged in the famous Meerut Conspiracy and other Raja Cases. He compiled many law books. Gradually drawn to mysticism. he came into close contact with Mahatma Gandhi, Sri Ramana Maharshi and later Sri J. Krishnamurti and Sri Aurobindo. Finally he gave up every material belonging and became a sannyasin.

For eight years he went into isolation. observed vow of silence. studied, wrote and contemplated on all that is best in all religions including Christianity and Sufism. But the Gita and the Bhagavata attracted him most. As a result of sixteen years' work on the Gita, he wrote a commentary on it which won him a Doctorate in Theology.

From 1940, he was an inmate of Brindaban practising intense sadhana at the feet of a realised soul. Sankirtan and the Gita were his guide-posts and his goal in life was to see Lord Radha-Krishna face to face. "Where then is the place for my photograph in my life?" he asked.

Sri Bankey Behari passed away in 1975.

Preface

The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan-that Institute of Indian Culture in Bombay-needed a Book University, a series of books which, if read, would serve the purpose of providing higher education. Particular emphasis, however, was to be put on such literature as revealed the deeper impulsions of India. If there is no conflict between these three then we can say that the person is successful in his life. V. S. Khandekar's book reveals these secrets of human life in his novel. There are many characters in this novel Of them, Anand believes only in sacrifice, the traditional belief; Appa and Bhayya are those incompetent people who shade off their responsiblities and justify themselves by making a single person shoulder it. Manik is hopeless, literate girl but has always failed in recognising a good mind, Usha is yet another character who has been aloof, never expressing feelings, good or bad. What are these characters eilling us? They tell us that following the customs and traditions blindlessly is harmful not only to the person following them but also to the society at large. It was in 1939 that the author stated his views as follows, 'when we talk about the values in a man's life then sacrifice is alway highly regarded than enduring. But the sacrifice should always be for a noble cause.' Do not you think that this view is true even today?

The Yajurveda Samhita or the prayer book of the Adhvaryu priest is recorded to have had as many as 101 recensions at the time of the grammarian Patanjali, out of which, only 5 have survived and are available at present, viz., Kathaka,Kapisthala, Maitrayani, Taittiriya, and Vajasaneyi, the first four belonging to the `Black Yajurveda` and the fifth to what is designated as `White yajurveda.` The Vajasaneyi Samhita which takes its name from Yajnavalkya Vajasaneya, the chief teacher of this Veda, has come down in two slightly differing versions known as the Kanva and the Madhyandina Samhitas. The chief difference between the texts of the `Black` and `White` Yajurveda lies in the fact that the latter contains only the Mantras, i.e., the prayers and sacrificial formulae which the priest has to utter, while the former contains in addition a presentation of the sacrificial rites belonging to them as well as the Brahmana or theological discussion on the same.
