The Shiva Sutra was revealed to Vasugupta by Shiva in order to counter the effects of dualism. This revelation initiated the hermeneutics of syntheses and exegesis climaxed by the great Abhinavagupta. The Shiva Sutara is the most important scripture in the Trika system of Kashmir Shaivism. As a book on yoga, it explains the nature and cause of bondage and the means to liberation from bondage.
Bhaskara is in the direct lineage of Vasugupta. To Bhaskara’s commentary, Mark Dyczkowski has added his translation of an anonymous commentary as an aid to understanding Bhaskara’s interpretation. This anonymous writer also serves as a bridge between Kshemaraja’s and Bhaskara’s commentaries, drawing from both. The commentary on each sutra is thus in three layers. Bhaskara’s commentary is first, followed by the anonymous commentary; after which Dyczkowski adds his own exposition and compares Bhaskara and Kshemaraja.

The Arrival of Monsoon - Indian Batik Painting

The beautiful Batik painting celebrates the arrival of first mansoon in a touchy manner. The beautiful lady is mesmerized by the drizzling. The lightning and the drops of rains have been painted using the dewaxing method. The lady is wearing a green cloth and she is putting on white ornaments. The window is painted with some beautiful carvings on it.

Batik, ('wax writing') is one of the most popular forms of paintings in India. The art has been in practice some 2000 years back. Rice starch and wax resists were used for printing.

A batik artist needs to have a good sense of colors and patterns. Though the motifs used in batik are simple, knowledge of color gradations and tack to remove wax finely are required.

Applying the wax resist and systematic cracking are the key to a beautiful art piece. The characteristic batik effect is created by cracking of wax on the lighter hues and seeping in of the darker colors though them.

                                                                  $95
