The Arthasamgraha is profound in contents, scholarly in treatment and simple and lucid in style and language. It condenses great amount of matter in pregnant language. The author, Laugaksi Bhaskara, about whose personal life sufficient information is not available, probably belonged to the South and Flourished in the 14th-15th century. He wrote the text for beginners and so the language is characterized by simplicity and brevity which are maintained even in the treatment of difficult problems. The work has gained popularity among scholars and beginners both and serves well as a gateway to the system of Purva Mimamsa.

The full name of the work as given by the author in the colophon is Purvamimamsarthasamgraha which means a compendium dealing with the topics of Purva Mimamsa.

The lesser known and explored of the two pillars of Hinduism, varna and asrama, asrama is a system of four distinct and legitimate ways of leading a religious life: as a celibate student, a married house-holder, a forest hermit, and a world renounce.

In this, the first full-length study of the asrama system, Patrick Olivelle uncovers its origin and traces its subsequent history. He examines in depth its relation ship to other institutional and doctrinal aspects of the Brahmanical world and its position within Brahmanical theology, and assesses its significance within the history of Indian religion. Throughout, the author argues that the asrama system is primarily a theological construct and that the system and its history should be carefully distinguished from the socio-religious institutions comprehended by the system and from their respective histories.

Olivelle pays special attention to how the system was theologically reappropriated in diverse ways at different historical periods through the hermeneutic labors of exegetes and theologians. About the Author:

Patrick Olivelle is the Chair, Department of Asian Studies, at the University of Texas at Austin, where he is the Professor of Sanskrit and Indian Religions. Among his recent publications are: The Samnyasa Upanisads (Oxford, 1992); Rules and Regulations of Brahmanical Asceticism (Albany, 1994); The Early Upanisads: Annotated Text and Translation (Oxford, 1998); Dharmasutras: Annotated Text and Translation (Delhi, 2000); and Manu's Code of Law: A Critical Edition and translation of the Manava-Dharmasastra (Oxford, 2004). His translations of Upanisads, Pancatantra, Dharmasutras, and The Law Code of Manu were published in Oxford World's Classics in 1996, 1997, 1999, and 2004.

Are the Vedas three or four in number? According to Hindu mythology, Paanchajanya, the first Dakshinavrutha Sankham (conch), emerged during the churning of the Ksheerasagara (ocean of milk) by the devas (gods) and asuras (demons). As the conch rose out of the ocean, its tremendous decibel frightened the demons. They appealed to Vishnu for protection. Lord Vishnu obliged, taking charge of the conch shell.

The primordial sound of creation, that is the Omkar or Pranavanadham, was thereby controlled. Hence forth, it became a part of Vishnu's five weapons. He adds: "In his various avatars, Vishnu has used all weapons to destroy evil forces. Only the conch shell and the sword remain. These, I believe, he will use in the present yuga on donning the Kalki avatar."

Conch shells have a significant place in Indian mythology. "Even in the great epic Mahabharata, these were given a lot of importance. Each conch shell had a specific name. Krishna's conch shell was known as Paanchajanya, Arjuna's Devdutta, Bhima's Paundra, Yudhisthira's Anantavijaya, Nakula's Sughosa and Sahadeva's was known as Manipushpaka.
