Lord Ganesh Dancing on Rat - Nepalese lost wax craft
Lord Ganesh Dancing on Rat - Nepalese lost wax craft
The beautiful brass figure of Lord Ganesha dancing on his vehicle a rat is nicely carved out in the traditional Nepalese lost wax craft method. The Lord is in a jolly mode and the rat is also reacting to its Lord’s sentiment. In Nepal, making metal images is a very old and glorious art. Metal craft products include metal figures of gods and goddesses of Hinduism and Buddhism. The art is primarily centred in Lalitpur (Patan) and Bhojpur. Lost wax method of casting is very popular in Nepal for which a wax model is made covering with varieties of clay. The figure is then heated so that the wax is melted. Then the liquid wax is extracted and metal is poured into the cavity. The original model is translated into the metal image. As the metal image out of the casting is quite rough, it is made smooth by chiseling. The metal statue is then painted as per the specifications of religion. This complicated craftsmanship requires an artist's conception, adequate technology, an engineer's precision and the skillful hands of a craftsman. Such a glorious technology is transferred from generation to generation and artisans follow the age – old designs and production technology. It is quite a labourious and time consuming process and a large piece of art can take up to six months to create and several people need to work on it.

The banks of river Narmada is described as the birth place of Yaksha king Kubera (Vaisravana), where his father Visravas, who was a sage, lived. He is said to have performed austerities for a thousand years, in reward for which Brahma - the Creator, gave him immortality and made him god of wealth and guardian of all the treasures of the earth, the nidhi which he was to give out to whom they were destined. When Brahma appointed him God of Riches, he gave him Lanka (Ceylon) as his capital, and presented him, according to the Mahabharata, with the vehicle Pushpaka, which was of immense size and ‘moved at the owner’s will at marvellous speed’. When Ravana captured Lanka, Kubera moved to His city of 'Alaka' in the Himalaya and established his Yaksha Kingdom there.

Mandala means "circle," and mandalas are indeed primarily recognizable by their concentric circles and other geometric figures. For Tantric Buddhists, they are rich with symbolism and sacred meaning. A mandala is a sacred geometric symbol that represents the universe. Once completed, a mandala becomes a sacred area that serves as a repository for deities and a collection point of universal forces. By entering a mandala and proceeding to its center, a person is symbolically guided through the cosmos to the essence of reality. By constructing a mandala, a monk ritually participates in the Buddha's teachings. In Buddhism, contemplation of sacred images is key to religious ritual, and a mandala is one of the most important of these sacred images. A Tibetan mandala is usually made with careful placement of colored sand, and accordingly is known in Tibetan as dul-tson-kyil-khor, or "mandala of colored powders."
