Description
From the Jacket
The primal spiritual of the Vedic tradition, which is the subject dealt with in this volume, contains the central ideas of the philosophy perennis - the One as the source and support of the many, the spirituality of matter, and the divinity of all living beings. Its outlook is holistic as it integrates beings with the primal Being. It has a long history of five millennia spanning pre-axial, and modern periods. It has been renewed from time to time through a series of renaissance - first through the Upanisads, again through the epics and the bhakti movement, and then through the modern renaissance leaders. Hence, it is vibrant in spite of its age, modern in spite of its antiquity. Swami Vivekananda, Ramana Maharsi and Jagadguru Candrasekharendra Sarasvati are some of the exemplars of the primal spirituality.

She is the daughter of the Maharaja of Cooch Behar and the widow of the Maharaja of Jaipur. She was raised in a sumptuous palace staffed with 500 servants and she shot her first panther when she was twelve. She has appeared on the lists of the world’s most beautiful women. Gayatri Devi describes her carefree tomboy childhood; her secret six-year courtship with the dashing, internationally renowned polo player, Jai the Maharaja of Jaipur; and her marriage and entrance into the City Palace of the ‘pink city’ where she had to adjust to unfamiliar customs and life with his two wives. Jai’s liberating influence, combined with Gayatri Devi’s own strong character, took her well beyond the traditionally limited activities of a Maharani. This is an intimate look at the extraordinary life of one of the world’s most fascinating women and an informal history of the princely states of India, from the height of the princes’ power to their present state of de-recognition.

DESCRIPTION:
The wisdom contained in Seeds of consciousness and Prior to Consciousness emerged from dialogues with devotees, who came from all over the world to learn the mysteries of life at the feet of the Maharaj, until a few days before his death in 1981 at the age of 84. Jean Dunn, a close follower of Maharaj, was with him towards his last days. She observes that,”During the last two years of his life Maharaj did not entertain any questions pertaining to this worldly life and its improvement. He taught only the highest truth. Even one sentenceof his was like an Upanishad. He was very blunt and sharp in his answers and did not cater for anyone’s ego.
In fact, his stated purpose was to destroy this ‘Pseudo-entity’. To be in his presence was to feel the vibrant truth, Impossible to describe. He was amazing to watch …….One could only gaze at him in total love and awe”, says Jean.

Foreign invaders took advantage of India’s disunity. Some time in the 12th century. The Afghan Chief Shahabuddin Ghori (also known as Mohammad of Ghor) captured the empire of Mahmud of Ghazni and became the new ruler of Ghazni.
After taking Lahore, he started his incursions into India. He marched to Delhi, which was then ruled by the valiant Rajput king Prithviraj Chauhan, who defeated him in the battle of Tarain.
The following year Mohammad returned to India and again met the forces of the Rajput king on the same battlefield. This time the Muslim invader inflicted a crushing defeat on the Hindu army.
This second battle proved to be a turning point in India history. It put an end to the Hindu Empire in Northern India forever and established Muslim rule.
Prithviraj Chauhan was a famous king and warrior. He was noted for his valour and chivalry. Despite his defeat and death, his name has been immortalized and he had become the hero of many legends. The story of Pithviraj Chauhan as told in the following pages is based on these legends.

Princess Samyukta loved him from afar, and when Prithviraj Chauhan claimed her for his own, defying the wrath of an implacable foe, their happiness was complete. Victorious in love and war, Prithviraj Chauhan was soon to discover that success came with a terrible price - trials, treachery and tragedy. What happened next? Read the tale of the legendary warrior who lives on in the hearts of those who remember his unmatched valor and timeless heroism."

The opulent, sometimes scandalous, private lives of the Mughals of India is brought to life in this book. The text cover svarious aspects of their lifestyles, such as their food and drinks; clothes and ornaments; perfumes and incense; addictions and intoxicants, amusements and pastimes; rituals of circumcision; marriage and harem life. This well-written book with colour illustrations and photographs will be a delight to the lay reader aswell as the serious scholar. Titled as it is, the book deals with the little known, but much scandalised, private life of the Mughals who ruled from 1526, practically to 1803 when the British captured Delhi and Agra, their nerve-centres, from them. This included theperiod ofthe reign of three great Mughals, viz. Akbar (1556-1605), Jehangir(1605-27) and Shah Jahan (1628-58), of little more than acentury. They possessed not only fabulous wealth, but also thevision tofound a culture-State, in the real sense of the term.Planting itin the soil as naturally as a banyan tree, they institutionalized their life, as much as their government. The former, almost completely shrouded in mystery, offers one of themost interesting aspects of medieval Indian history and culture.
AUTHOR OF THE BOOK
Prof. R. Nath (b. 1933), has worked at more than 50 ancient and medieval sites of India and with his extensive knowledge of Sanskrit and Persian, has authored several books, monographs, research papers and articles.

This book highlights the intellectual and diplomatic distinction of K. Natwar Singh. From a very young age he came into intimate contact with world-renowned personalities. As he reveals:’While working on this book, the thought struck me that the Natwar Singh of these letters was obviously someone that had been transmuted out of the indubitably common metal that he is, into a superior product by the alchemy of the minds of indulgent and warmhearted well-wishers. Indira Gandhi, R.K.Narayan, Han Suyin, E.M. Forster, Nargis Dutt et al figure in the list of these distinguished well-wishers. These letters tell us as much about the writers as they reflect on the engaging personality of the recipient.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
This book treats two representative Hindu rituals of contemporary India, Puja (offering service) and Samskara (initiation rituals at important occasions of life). amskara rites are performed at significant junctures of an individual`s life, from birth to death, by the individual`s family. Puja rites, rather than being performed in relation to the life cycle of an individual in a family, are more deeply related to the annual rituals of the cult to which an individual or the person`s family belongs. Persons may go to a temple and request priests to perform puja rites, or they may perform them themselves at home.
For people living in India, Puja and Samskara are not at all uncommon. Puja rites are performed everywhere-at temples, in private homes, on street corners-and although in recent times families observing all the traditional Samskara rites have declined in number, almost all Hindu families still perform the major Samskaras. it is difficult, however, for those living outside India to know how these rites are performed. Hence, this book presents a large number of photographs that enable readers to gain an accurate grasp of them and indicates the place of ritual in the total structure of religion.

Description
About the Book : Besides its gigantic size and encyclopaedic and eclectic nature of its content the Puranic corpus stands apart from, the earlier Brah-manical literature in many significant ways; not the least of them being the fact that whereas the Vedas and the Dharmasastras had been meant for self study and were for the exclusive religious edification of the members of the upper stratum the puranas were required to be recited in popular gatherings and were generally projected as the scriptures of the masses. Their popular base and mass appeal can be judged from the fact that Puranic lore like that of the Epics has over the centuries become deeply ingrained in popular psyche. But what is really intriguing is the extraordinary nature of exigency which compelled the Brahmanical leaders to give up their former elitist and almost inflexible stance and not only take notice of the substratum of society but also seek to win them over through a genre of literature specially composed for them. Perhaps what is even more surprising is that though so much has been made provide as written about the Puranas in the past century and a half yet no serious attempt has been made to provide as completely convincing and wholly viable rationale for their composition and subsequent proliferation. The present work aims at removing this lacuna and establishing the purposive nature of the Puranic texts. It also seeks to underline the dialectical nature of relationship that existed between the processes of their composition and the forces of acculturation that became activated and more visible during Gupta/Post – Gupta times due to the amounting demands and pressures of an emergent socio economic order based on agricultural expansion.
About the Author : Dr. Vijay Nath is a Reader in Jankidevi College Delhi University. She secured her Master's and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Delhi. Her articles focusing on socio economic and religious history of ancient India have appeared in a number of well known journals. She is the author of the book Dana; Gift System in Ancient India: A Socio economic Perspective. She has been elected president of ancient Indian History section of the sixty first session of India History Congress.
