The beautiful velvet painting of the Lord Shiva shows the Lord in a meditative posture as He is blessing his disciples with his one hand. He is painted blue. A rare sense of gravity and accomplishment is manifest on His face. The trident and the coil of the serpent are also nicely painted. Though the Lord is associated with destruction, destruction is also a prelude to regeneration.

DESCRIPTION:
The fascinating story of a journey to the source of a legend – the Nanda Devi Sanctuary – which has been described by explorers as ‘more inaccessible than the North Pole’.Until 1934 the hidden valley of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary, on the border between India and Tibet, had never been entered by human beings. Surrounded by 20,000-foot peaks, which effectively seal off Mt Nanda Devi at their centre, it remains virtually impenetrable even today. Many early explorers, drawn there by the idea of a ‘lost Eden’ in the Himalaya, could only gaze with longing at the Sanctuary – until the ‘terrible-twins’ of pre-Second World War mountaineering, Eric Shipton and Bill Tillman, solved the problem by forcing an entrance up a precipitous river gorge. Subsequent expeditions were beset by tragedy and concern that the fragile ecology of the Sanctuary might be damaged; until, for curious reasons involving the CIA- – which the first edition of this book revealed – the Indian government finally decided to ban all visitors. The Sanctuary was briefly reopened in 2000 for a special millennium expedition, of which Hugh Thomson was a part.Thomson weaves the story of this last journey to the Sanctuary together with those who have gone before him, and gives a tantalizing account of a place described by explorers as ‘more inaccessible than the North Pole’.

This bell is creatively carved out with a Nandi the Vahana of Lord Shiva. The symbol of “Om” is also depicted on it. The bell is called Ghanta in Indian languages. A well designed ghanta or bell produces long strains of the sound “Om”. The body of a ghanta represents time, while the tongue represents Goddess Saraswati.

The beautiful image of Nandi, the vehicle of Lord Shiva, the Lord of destruction and one of the Trinity, is given a gorgeous and detail treatment. Nandi is said to be the vehicle of Lord Shiva. The bull represents both power and ignorance. Lord Shiva's use of the bull as his vehicle expresses the idea that He removes ignorance and bequeaths power of wisdom on His followers

Description

The vehicle of Lord Shiva has been nicely carved out of wood with some beautiful carvings in it. Nandi is also the leader of the Ganas. The close association of Shiva and Nandi explains the presence of a statue of Nandi at the gate of the Garbha Griha (sanctum sanctorum) of every mandir dedicated to Shiva. In Hindu mythology, it was Nandi who cursed Ravana (the demon King of Lanka) that his kingdom would be burnt by a monkey (Vanara). In addition to being his mount, Nandi is Shiva's foremost disciple. As the foremost disciple of Lord Shiva, it is important to seek the blessings of Nandi before proceeding to worship Lord Shiva. There is an interesting anectdote about Nandi’s devotion to Shiva. Once the gods and the demons utilized Vasuki, the serpent, as the rope to churn the mountain to obtain the nectar of immortality. The devas pulled from one end and the asuras from the other. Vasuki was upset during the process of this churning, and vomited up a poison which became human karma. This "poison" was so dangerous that none of the devas or asuras wanted to go near it that would drag the divinity down to the realms of human suffering and ego. As everyone else ran away, Lord Shiva, followed by Nandi, came forward to help as he was the only one who could counteract this deadly poison. Shiva took the poison into his hand and drank it. Nandi saw some of the poison spill out of Shiva's mouth and immediately drank if off the ground. The devas and asuras watching were shocked and wondered aloud what would happen to Nandi. Lord Shiva calmed their fears saying, "Nandi has surrendered into me so completely that he has all my powers and my protection". Such was the devotion of Nandi towards Shiva!

Description
In this beautiful brass figure Nandi is shown carrying Shivalinga protected by hooded-serpent. The figure of Nandi, the vehicle of Lord Shiva is given a resplendent touch. Nandi is the bull that served as the mount of Lord Shiva and as the gatekeeper of Shiva and Parvati. Nandi is the chief guru of eighteen masters (18 Siddhar) including Patanjali and Thirumular. Temples devoted to Lord Shiva display stone images of a seated Nandi, generally facing the main shrine. Therefore Nandi is the protector of the temple. There are also a number of temples dedicated exclusively to Nandi. Lord Shiva is one of the most powerful deities and is responsible for the destruction of the universe. But this destruction became necessary as it is the prelude to a new beginning. He is the Supreme Consciousness that illuminates the three states of waking, dreaming and deep sleep. Offering the threefold bilva leaves to the Shivalinga heralds the return to a level of consciousness beyond the three states, which is the fourth state, turiya. The dawning of that state is consonant with the awakening of the individual.
