Description:

The distinguishing feature of all schools of Indian philosophy in general is that these do not remain content with merely enunciating the metaphysical tenets of the particular school, but they also set up the spiritual goal before the seekers, prescribing the modes of spiritual discipline to reach it. Spiritual discipline or Yoga therefore constitutes an inseparable part of the philosophy of every school. This is very true especially in the case of Tantric schools, in which spiritual practices or sadhana kriya dominate. The performance of kriya in the prescribed manner forms an integral part of all texts dealing with Tantra Yoga.
This book opens with an account of the nature, origin and development of Saiva-Sakta Tantras, their classification under different schools, the wealth of literature available belonging to these schools, etc. It also sheds light on the principal metaphysical tenets of Saiva and Sakta Tantras, relevant to the study of Tantra-Yoga. The topics covered in this book are the concepts of divine Grace or saktipata, guru and his different kinds, the process of initiation (diksa) and its varieties, mantra’s nature and place in sadhana kriya, different modes of spiritual discipline, Kundalini Yoga, the highest spiritual goal, etc.
This book attempts to remove the misconceptions widespread in the academic world about the theory and practice of Tantra-Yoga, which have been deliberately kept secret by the practitioners to prevent their misuse by unscrupulous persons.

Description:

Ancient Indian tradition traces the origins of the Shaiva cult to the Agamic thought current. The emergence of the Trika school of Shaivism in Kashmir marks the climax in the development of the Advaita Shaiva thought, being backed up by a rich Sanskrit literature. The doctrine of recognition (pratyabhijna) constitutes the cardinal doctrine in the philosophy of the Advaita Shaiva School. The sadhaka (spiritual seeker) has to try to discover his real being by removing the various veils, to thereafter recognize his true essence.
The Advaita Shaivas describe the nature of the Supreme Reality, one without a second, in two different ways namely, as Caitanya or Samvid as an abstract metaphysical principle (nirakara tattva) as well as Parama Shiva and Parameshvara possessing a form (sakara Being). They also describe the Supreme Reality as the transcendent Absolute (anuttara) and at the same time as all-pervasive Reality (vishvatmaka)
The Advaita Shaiva philosophers have not only shed light on the process of the world manifestation in the conventional way, they have added a new dimension to it by describing it in terms of involution on the part of Caitanya to the gross level of matter; or as the unfoldment on the part of the Supreme Lord out of His free will, exercising His svatantrya shakti, or as His self-extension in the aspect of His Shakti. They mention seven different kinds of experients or subjects (embodied, unembodied, and disembodied), a concept unique in the annals of Indian philosophy.
The concept of purnahanta (pure I-experience) symbolizing the fullness-nature of the Supreme Experient, i.e. Shiva pramata different from the ego-experience (ahamkara) of the limited embodied beings, has been explained in this book in esoteric terms as it marks a unique contribution of Kashmir Shaivism to Indian philosophical thought.

“Marco Pallis was at once an incomparable authority on Buddhism, especially in its Tibetan form, a defender and protector of the Tibetan tradition in the West since the tragedies of 1951, a lover of nature and a mountain climber who first encountered Tibetan Buddhism while climbing Himalayan peaks in the 1920s, a profound student of other religions, especially Christianity, and a very accomplished musician. All of these concerns of Pallis are reflected in A Buddhist Spectrum, whose themes are woven together by the principles of tradition and, more particularly, by Buddhism. It is a Buddhist work on both religion as such and religions in their multiplicity, presented in a contemporary but traditional language. A major characteristic of the book is that it is concerned with the reality of Buddhism and not just a theoretical analysis of its ideas. A Buddhist Spectrum is a wise book while being thoroughly reliable from a scholarly point of view.
A Buddhist Spectrum is at once one of the most readable works on Buddhism and a major work on comparative religion and living spirituality. It is the fruit of the thoughts and meditations of a man whose authoritative exposition during several decades of religious questions in general and Buddhism in particular, especially in its Tibetan form, have had a profound influence upon many scholars and practitioners of religion in both East and West.”
—Seyyed Hossein Nasr, George Washington University
“For insight, and the beauty insight requires if it is to be effective, I find no writer on Buddhism surpassing him.”

Swami Brahmananda As we Saw Him is yet another addition to the rich reminiscences literature published by the Ramakrishna Order. Like the other books of the same genre, we are sure this book too will be received with enthusiasm and fervour. Reminiscences, on account of their sheer real-life connectivity, are an easy method to abstruse principle or concept of spirituality. They are, hence, widely welcomed by spiritual seeks everywhere.

As noted the Publishers Note, this book may be considered as a companion volume to The Eternal Companion, the book containing Swami Brahmanandas short life and teachings. Though some of the reminiscences were included in the earlier edition of Eternal Companion, this volume contains many more additional reminiscences. These reminiscences have been culled from diverse sources, a complete list of which is provided at the end of the book. Many of these reminiscences are appearing in his from for the first time (for instance the one by Swami Ashokananda). A good number of reminiscences included were originally written or recorded in Bengali but their English translation have appeared in var

Origonal Sanskrit with english Translation Valmiki's Ramayana, consisting of 24000 verses,is one of the most famous epics in the world's literature.Apart from it's literary grandeur,it is also looked upon by the Hindus as a holy text. Of the six sections or Kandas of the Ramayana, the present volume comprises the fifth, known as th Sundarakandam.Consisting as it does of 2885 Sanskrit verses, the Sundarakandam deals with the heroic exploits of Hanuman in one day and night, during which he crossed over to Lanka, discovered Sita, inflicted crushing defeat on Rakhasa forces, set fire to Lanka and returned to the southern shore of the Indian contiinent to convey the news of Sita's discovery to Rama at Kiskhindha. Devotee-scholars of India who equate the whole of the Ramayana with the Veda, consider the Sunderakandam as it's Upanishad, the essential portion. It's study is considered equal to the study of the whole Ramayan.Pious Hindus atach great psychic potency to this text, and use it for ceremonial recitation for the attainment of various worldly blessings also.

The Swami's multifaceted personality, along with his deep insights into life and human nature, establish these reminiscences as a true spiritual treasury. Includes a short biography, photos and illustrations, glossary and more.
Review

Swami Vivekananda once referred to Swami Brahmananda as a spiritual dynamo. These reminiscences related by Brahmachari Akshayachaitanya and freely translated by Swami Bhaskarananda clearly reveal the innumerable ways in which he radiated that spiritual power. His calm majestic personality is sweet, soothing, inspiring and enlightening. Though often lost in profound mystical moods, this man of God could be down-to-earth as well, dealing with day-to-day details of many centers of the Ramakrishna Order, expressing his sympathetic concern for devotees and, most importantly, showering his divine love on all. His deep insights into life and human nature touched the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to come into contact with him. It is said God has the nature of a child. Childlike himself, Swami Brahmananda was witty with an irrepressible sense of humor who delighted in playing practical jokes on many unsuspecting monks and devotees. These reminiscences are indeed a veritable spiritual feast for sincere seekers of God. --Swami Prabuddhananda, head of the Vedanta Society of Northern California

To reminiscence is to simply recall. But when one reminisces ... about a spiritual giant of Swami Brahmananda s stature, it becomes an act of meditation. Swami Brahmananda, a direct disciple of Sri Ramakrishna and the first President of the Ramakrishna Order, has left behind a rich legacy of how to live a spiritual vibrant life. His lofty state of mind, practical wisdom and a deep love and sympathy for all those who came in touch with him, is a legend in the Ramakrishna tradition. Swami Bhaskarananda, the translator of the present volume, has taken great pains to provide a faithful and clear translation, with copious explanatory notes and a glossary. He has also added a short biographical sketch of Swami Brahmananda. ... Nothing could be of greater help in the contemporary world where the need for such books is keenly felt, but rarely met. --Publisher, Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai

Devi Mahatmya
Devi Mahatmya
Description:

The Devi-Mahatmya is well-known to both devotees and scholars of the Indian Great Goddess. The central task in this study is to explore how an anonymous Sanskrit text articulates a view of ultimate reality as feminine when there is virtually no precedent in the Sanskrit for such a view. To accomplish this task, an appropriate method of scriptural analysis is developed. This involves an examination of Hindu understanding of the Puranas and of the Devi-Mahatmya in particular, along with consideration of several recent scholarly discussions, in India and elsewhere. The study culminates in annotated translations of the text's hymns.

Panini's Grammatik
Panini's Grammatik
Description:

Otto Bohtlingk was one of the greatest, its not the greatest Indologists of the nineteenth century. This was Bohtlingk's first publication which appeared in 1839-40 in two volumes. The present edition, combining those two volumes, contains Panini's sutras accompanied by a German translation and notes and the Dhatupatha and Ganapatha along with other useful indices. The Astadhyayi of Panini is even today very hard to follow and was in Bohtlingk's time an extremely challenging text. It was a pioneering work and it ought to have been evaluated in that spirit. As stated by Renou (1969), Bohtlingk's edition of the Astadhyayi was considered the standard edition in Europe. It was responsible for what might be called a 'revolution' in linguistic thinking both in Indo-European linguistics as well as in general linguistics. The investigation of Sanskrit grammar proved to be a stimulus for the study of the history of Indo-European languages. It was realized for the first time in the history of linguistics that a word could be neatly broken into root, stem-forming suffix and desinence. Bohtlingk's was the first standard text and continued to be used until new editions with detailed exegetical explanations came into being.

Perceiving in Advaita Vedanta
Perceiving in Advaita Vedanta
Description:

Advaita Vedanta is the non dualistic school of vedanta primarily explicated by Samkara. The purpose of this study is to undertake an analysis of the epistemological issues inherent in the Advaita Vedanta theory of the Knowing and the known to explicate their two tiered theory of knowledge from a phenomenalistic perspective and at the same time to make sense of the overarching unity that prevails over the duality and division. The interpretation and analysis is based on Dharmaraja's Vedanta Paribhasa and its commentary Paribhasa Prakasika. The theory of perception of the text of VP is Gupta's primary focus. The present work also includes a translation of the perception chapter of the text of VP and a free reconstruction of the gloss provided on it by PP. Additionally the book contains extensive critical notes clarifying some of the complex ideas contained in VP and PP.

Couplets from Kabir (Kabir Dohe)
Couplets from Kabir (Kabir Dohe)
Description:

The book contains Kabir's couplets. Under each verse has been given a few lines in prose to help the reader grasp the underlying importance of the message of the saint-poet.
(reprint)The fifteenth century saint-poet Kabir's extempore outpourings of songs and couplets numbering thousands have been hailed widely for their deep spiritual fervour and poetic quality. They are widely read with rapture and regard by old and young alike in India. Some of his poems were translated into English by Tagore in 1915 and later by a couple of others. These have been popular among the English-speaking people at home and abroad. Kabir's couplets which are considered as rich gems for their spiritual message and worldly wisdom have not been rendered into English so far. Here is rhymed English verse translation of three hundred of them from a wide cross-section of the multifaced genius' utterances. Under each verse have been given a few lines in prose to help the reader grasp the underlying import of the message of the saint-poet.

Review
''Kabir is both a mystic and a great poet. Many in Hindi and elsewhere look up to him as a courageous social activist and the great saint of the Nirguna stream. The Dohas have been well known for their message and insight, their directness and telling effect.'' - --Focus Malayalam Writing Today

''I am happy to record my appreciation to the translation of Sant Kabir's dohas made by Sh. Gananath Das in the simple and expressive way in which Kabir himself wrote his dohas.'' - --Dr. Ram Kumar Verma
