Sahir Ludhianvi can be called the poet with a “social conscience” as is evident from his poetry in which social concerns are often the dominant themes. Through his poetry he lamented the decline of morality in society, discrimination against women, futility of war, and attacked the rise of the self-appointed custodians of religion and power-hungry politicians. Born into a Muslim family on March 8, 1921, his real name was Abdul Hayee and Sahir Ludhianvi was his pen name. Sahir's childhood was marked by the separation of his parents and the unfair treatment of his mother. His first work, a collection of poems in Urdu, Talkhiyan, was published in 1945 when he was just 24 years old. He worked as a journalist and editor in Lahore, editing several Urdu magazines. In 1949 he moved to Mumbai, after the Pakistan government issued arrest warrants for him for making inflammatory and communal statements. Mumbai proved to be lucky for him as his poetic genius was discovered by the Hindi film industry. For three decades he wrote lyrics of Hindi film songs, forming successful partnerships with several music directors. His ego often came in the way of his ability to sustain long term professional relationships and he fell out with people over trivial matters. He died of a cardiac arrest on October 25, 1980 in Mumbai. Sahir Ludhianvi was honoured with the Padma Shri in 1971, and on his 92nd birthday a commemorative stamp was issued in his memory. Best of Sahir offers an English translation of Sahir Ludhinavi's selected ghazals and nazms along with their transliterations in Hindi and English.

Mohammad Iqbal was a poet and political philosopher, known both for his poetry and his ideas that were influential in the creation of Pakistan. Mohammad Iqbal was born in Sialkot, Pubjab in 1877. He graduated from Government College, Lahore, with a master's degree in philosophy and then taught there until 1905. During this period his poetry expressed an ardent nationalism, but a marked change came over his views between 1905 and 1908, while studying for his doctorate at Cambridge University, England, as he was deeply influenced by the philosophies of Nietzsche and Bergson and became extremely critical of Western civilization, which he regarded as decadent. Iqbal turned to Islam for inspiration and rejected nationalism as a disease of the West. He argued that Muslims must find their destiny through a pan-Islamic movement that ignored national boundaries. These ideas found expression in his long peoms 'Asrar-e-Khudi' (The Secrets of the Self) in 1915 and 'Rumuz-e-Bekhudi' (The Mysteries of Selflessness) in 1918, which he wrote in Persian and not Urdu. In his last years Iqbal returned to Urdu as his poetic medium. He died in Lahore on April 21, 1938. मोहन राकेश (8 जनवरी 1925 - 3 दिसम्बर 1972) हिन्दी के बहुमुखी प्रतिभा-सम्पन्न लेखक थे जिन्होंने मात्र सैंतालीस वर्षों के जीवनकाल में अनेक स्मरणीय नाटक, उपन्यास और कहानियों की रचना की। उनका नाटक ‘आषाढ़ का एक दिन’ हिन्दी साहित्य का पहला आधुनिक नाटक माना जाता है। 1947 के बाद हिन्दी साहित्य के फलक पर उभरने वाले लेखकों में वे अग्रणी लेखक थे जिन्होंने बदलते समय और सन्दर्भ को आगे बढ़कर अपनाया और उसे अपने लेखन में उतारा। अपने समकालीन लेखकों कमलेश्वर और राजेन्द्र यादव के साथ उन्होंने ‘नयी कहानी साहित्यिक आन्दोलन’ को प्रारम्भ किया। 1947 से 1969 तक उनकी लिखी सभी 66 कहानियाँ इस संग्रह में सम्मिलित हैं। यदि कहानियाँ क्रमानुसार परखी जायें तो उनमें निरन्तर लेखकीय विकास मिलता है। कथा-शिल्प में तो मोहन राकेश माहिर थे और थोड़े से शब्दों में बहुत कह जाना उनकी विशेषता थी जो इस बात का प्रमाण है कि भाषा पर उनका कितना अधिकार था। उनकी कुछ कहानियों की पृष्ठभूमि शहरी मध्यवर्ग है तो कुछ कहानियों में भारत विभाजन के दर्द की पुकार सुनाई देती है, लेकिन हर एक कहानी पाठक के दिल और दिमाग पर अपनी अमिट छाप छोड़ जाती है।
