Om-The Sacred Word
Om-The Sacred Word

The sacred word OM has been painted in the traditional Batik style. The Hindu sacred word is batiked with wax on cotton cloth . The OM bears great significance for the Hindus. The vibration produced by chanting Om in the physical universe corresponds to the original vibration that first arose at the time of creation. The sound of Om is also called Pranava, meaning that it sustains life and runs through Prana or breath. Om also represents the four states of the Supreme Being. The three sounds in Om (AUM) represent the waking, dream and deep sleep states and the silence, which surrounds Om, represents the "Turiya" state. It is believed that chanting of Om drives away all worldly thoughts and removes distraction and infuses new vigour in the body. The chanting of Om is a powerful tonic. Om makes the mind serene and pointed, and infuses the spiritual qualifications, which ensure self-realization. According to the epic, when Garuda was first born out of an egg, he appeared as a raging inferno equal to the cosmic conflagration that consumes the world at the end of every age. Frightened, the gods prayed for mercy. Garuda, hearing their plea, reduced himself in size and energy.

Garuda's father was the creator-rishi Kasyapa, mother Vinata, whose sister was Kadru, the mother of serpents. Vinata lost a bet and became enslaved to her sister. Garuda approached the serpents. He was told that they would free his mother if Garuda could bring them the elixir of immortality, also called amrita. The amrita at that time was in the possession of the gods, who guarded it jealously, since it was the source of their immortality. They had ringed the elixir with a massive fire that covered the sky. They had blocked the way to the elixir with a fierce mechanical contraption of sharp rotating blades. And finally, they had stationed two gigantic poisonous snakes next to the elixir as deadly guardians.

Garuda defeated the gods and took the elixir into his mouth. He came toward the eagerly waiting serpents. En route, he encountered Vishnu. Rather than fight, the two exchanged promises. Vishnu promised Garuda the gift of immortality even without drinking from the elixir, and Garuda promised to become Vishnu's mount. At last, Garuda could liberate his mother Vinata.

Krishna Punishes Kaliya - Paata Painting
Krishna Punishes Kaliya - Paata Painting

The Pata painting depicts Lord Krishna overpowering the Kaliya, the serpent. There was a great lake near the river Yamuna. Here resided the black and venomous serpent Kaliya. Due to his poisonous vapors, the surrounding area was so contaminated that no living being would dare venture near the place. One day Krishnas fellow cowherds went near the lake and after drinking water fell sick.

Krishna after learning this said: I shall vanquish this king of serpents and release the inhabitants of the country from their continual dread.

Following a fierce battle, Krishna overpowered the serpents and following the prayers by the wives of the Kaliya, he pardoned Kaliya on the condition that Kaliya would leave the place forever.

The manner in which Krishna subdues Kaliya has a fascinating quality about it. The dance to victory, the effortless rhythm of the Almighty's pace of creation and destruction, the ease, the grace, the sheer play in the manifestations of the Lord's will, to which wind and water provide enchanted accompaniment, are beautifully brought out in the narrative. Indeed, this is the first inkling in textual material of Krishna as natwar (the dancer).
