About Author:

Yogacharya Vacaspati Dr. Ashoke Kumar Chatterjee, author of this book was born in 1933 in West Bengal. The sudden demise of his mother when he was away in service intensely agonised him. He grew averse to material pursuits and became spiritually in-clined. He received initiation in Kriyayoga in April 1961. He reached the pinnacle of Kriyayoga within a short span. His three Gurus were stalwarts in this discipline. His first Guru was Sri Annada Charan Sastri (Bhattacharya) disciple of Panchanan Bhattacharya, an elevated disciple of Yogiraj Sri Shama Churn Lahiree. After Sastrirji’s demise, Dr. Chatterjee obtained initiation from Sundarlal Lala of Varanasi, disciple of Sri Harinarayan Paladhi, who was the disciple of Yogiraj and later from Sri Satyacharan Lahiri, grandson of Yogiraj. Today Yogacharya Vacaspati Chatterjee is acknowledged as a World Kriyayoga Master.
Being an ardent devotee of Sanatana Dharma’s Polestar, Yogiraj Shama Churn Lahiree and to propagate His ideals and tenets before the masses so that they derive the right path, the right enlightenment, he has penned many books in Bengali, illustrating the science of Kriyayoga. Most of his books have been published in Indian languages like Hindi, Oriya, Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati. Tamil, Malayalam, Assamese editions are awaiting publication. Purana Purusha Yogiraj Sri Shama Churn Lahiree has been published in French also. His other books (English editions) are also awaiting publication. He has authored quite a number of articles delineating the science hence rationality of Kriyayoga.
He has founded “Yogiraj Shyamacharan Sanatan Mission” and the temple of Yogiraj at Kakdwip, West Bengal, India with the objective that mankind can derive the Kriyayoga revived by Yogiraj. He has organized philanthropic activities through this Mission. To further Yogiraj-consciousness he has travelled throughout India and in many places in the Orient and Occident. People irrespective of caste, creed, colour, nation, language, Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Jains, untouchables, renouncers, are all coming under his aegis and are finding in him their haven and panacea for all evils. He has a large following throughout India and abroad like USA, England, France, Spain, Canada, Australia, South Korea, Bangladesh, etc.

Puranic Encyclopaedia
Puranic Encyclopaedia

From the Jacket:

This voluminous work, a store- house of information about the Epics, Puranas and allied literature, was originally composed and published in Malayalam. It constituted the results of the author's devoted study and research extending over fourteen years. This English version of the same is to meet the growing demand of scholars interested in the study of Puranas. This stupendous work, in the form of an exhaustive descriptive index, covers the vast and varied field of ancient Indian culture in all aspects - history, geography, religion, philosophy, myths, beliefs and practices as depicted in the Epics and Puranas.

The work is planned on scientific lines. The material compiled is arranged systematically. Citations have been inserted in support of stated facts; at places they have been substituted by references. Obsolete and obscure words, denoting objects such as a particular tree or plant have been explained by their scientific or vernacular equivalents. All modern critical apparatus has been utilized in the preparation of this comprehensive work.

Foreword

I feel flattered and consider it to be great privilege to have been asked by Shri Vettam Mani to contribute a foreword to his Puranic Encyclopaedia, a really magnificent literary production, massive in size and rich and invaluable in contents. This is the first attempt in Malayalam and for the matter of that in any Indian or foreign language, so far as I know, to produce a comprehensive and well-nigh exhaustive book of study and reference with regard to episodes, incidents, characters etc. occurring in the many Puranas and such other works in Sanskrit. In the field of mythology, with regard to variety and contents as also sheer bulk, Greece stands first. Egypt comes only next. But Indian mythology-the epics and the puranas-far exceeds and excels both Greek and Egyptian mythologies put together in merit and size. Even the preparation of a complete list of characters mentioned in our epics, puranas etc. will be a stupendous and well-nigh impossible task calling for the combined efforts of a number of scholars. But, fortunately for us, each and every such name, one need not necessarily know or be acquainted with. At the same time there are great names which compel attention and should not escape a proper study. And, such names are legion, and Shri Mani has not omitted mention of even one such name in his great work. I looked up the encyclopaedia for a few such random names, and was really surprised to find detailed treatment of the same in the book. Moreover, with reference to really important names, incidents and episodes connected with them and the whole genealogy are given. Everything is fully documented and quite authoritative. And, deep, extensive and exhaustive study, patient and untiring research and above all absolute dedication to the cause are so very patent on every page of the book. Literally and in effect Shri Mani's is a unique contribution, the first and foremost book, in the magnificent spheres of religion, culture, scholarship and history all put together. As the pioneer in the field he can justly feel happy and proud about his rare achievement, and he deserves in ample measure the unstinted praise and appreciation of all lovers of learning and culture.

Shri Mani has already earned well-deserved reputation as a teacher, especially in Malayalam, and also as a diligent student of literature and author of talent. He evidently possesses a flair for research. All such distinguished talents and attainments of his have been fully and quite successfully commissioned in the preparation of this marvelous encyclopaedia. He has put every lover of learning and knowledge everywhere, under an eternal debt of gratitude by the publication of this noble work.

Pure Yoga
Pure Yoga
In Yoga the question of boundaries, the constant talk about the various yogas, is, to a very large extent, an artificial one, mind-created.

Translators and commentators have constantly and shortsightedly referred to the Gheranda Samhita as a Hatha-Yoga classic. Normally presented as the most basic and material of all yogas, it is understood quite literally by all sorts of authorities and grossly interpreted by guru and disciple alike. Such teachings, when partially grasped and separated from the whole, constitute a poor caricature of the Sacred Science. The same is true of so many `exciting` and `new` meditation techniques being propounded nowadays; transcendent only in their refined materialism, in the "What`s in it for me" attitude. Such reflections have prompted the author to reveal, for the first time, many of the inner or spiritual aspects of this Pure Yoga treatise. Hence the present work, which is much more than just Hatha-Yoga teachings, as popularly and most improperly understood. Though whole and eternal, Yoga is constantly being lost; it is also constantly being found. Wise indeed is he who finds it.

The Gheranda-samhita is a text on Yoga. It is not just a treatise on Hatha-yoga, as most people have come to understand the meaning
of the word 'hatha' and as the reader will discover. It is Integral Yoga at its best. Yet some people have taken themselves to the teachings and self appointed gurus with such superficial naivety and unwise enthusiasm-even if sometimes sincere-that they almost automatically place themselves in no position to derive any real benefits from them, for they lack the key to the proper understanding of the Sacred Science. Every single time that Yoga is misunderstood, misconceived, it degenerates into something which is only Yoga by name, i.e. gymnastics, fakirism, beauty culture and therapy, health science, sex therapy, meditation technique and so on. Thus distorting it and even bringing the Sacred Science into disrepute.

He whose approach to Yoga is pure, practical and consistent, will come to know Yoga. To him only the Secret Supreme can be revealed. Hence the title for this new translation of a most competent treatise-seldom properly understood-on the integral Science of Yoga :
Pure Yoga. He who would aspire to reach the sublime heights of Raja-yoga must, above all else, be pure.

                            Description:

It is a pictorial presentation with acecdotes from Bhagavan Ramana’s life.

In the 1980’s, the monthly journal brought out by Ramana Maharshi Centre for Learning, Bangalore, The Ramana Way, published a series of anecdotes from the life of Sri Bhagavan and reminiscences of Old Devotees, under the title: Purushottama Ramana. Its author, V. Ganesan, has had the unenviable golden opportunity of staying close to those elderly devotees of Sri Bhagavan, who had dedicated their lives at the sacred feet of the Great Master; and recording those precious gems. This series later was brought out in book form under the same title: Purushottama Ramana. The Editor of The Ramana Way, Kumari Sarada, aptly wrote in her Preface: “Our readers would eagerly await the fresh anecdote about Bhagavan Ramana in every issue, penned by V. Ganesan’s vivid narrative style. He chose the verses of the eighteenth chapter of Sri Ramana Gita as points of reference, based on the description of the Master’s Glory in these verses by Kavyakantha Ganapati Muni. Some incidents, narrated by him, bring tears to the eyes, others humble our pride and present the might, the majesty of Sri Ramana.” The uniqueness of the book is that every anecdote is followed by a captivating blow-up photo of Sri Bhagavan. Infinite indeed is the beauty of each picture – the gentle smile, the majestic glance, the indrawn silence, the tender compassion! May the reader be showered with the Grace and Blessings of Sri Bhagavan, is our humble prayer to Him.

                                                      Description:

This book presents an article published in 1963 and since translated into Spanish and French, but being published in book form in English for the first time.
The book records the vision of a truth seeker unclouded by theological dogmatism or sectarian bigotry. It is a quintessential exposition of the direct awareness of reality unmediated by the inherently defective instruments we use in our efforts to gain knowledge. All our exertions to obtain authentic knowledge about Reality are foredoomed to be frustrated by the inbuilt constraints of our psychological organism. Hence we only grope in the twilight borderland between the real and the unreal, mistaking the phantasms of appearance for the substance of reality. Thus the central paradox in our search for truth is that in order to know Reality as it is the knower should disappear, i.e. the ego-mind should spontaneously dissolve itself in its substratum — the thought-free consciousness with which the ultimate Reality is homogeneous. With the dissolution of the ego-mind the subject-object dichotomy eliminates itself and Truth shines in its original effulgence.

Simple Lessons You Can Use from a Buddhist Monk

Why are we here? What is goodness? Is there any value in goodness that an ordinary person – the sort who can be lured into foolish behavior – can make use of in this world? Is there a God and if so, can I depend upon Him or Her?

These are the questions that plague the wakeful moments of a common man. A penetrating mind won’t find satisfaction in looking at these questions conventionally. These questions have to be seen from the bottom up, so to speak.

In Questions from the City, Answers from the Forest, Buddhist monk and author Ajahn Sumano Bhikkhu explores the human mind and the causes behind humankind’s suffering. Written on a well-travelled, battery-powered laptop in a meditation cave in Thailand, this distillation of Buddhist wisdom answers the questions of “city” people who sought out the Buddhist in his forest retreat to obtain his answers to life’s most basic questions.

In it the author ushers the reader in the presence of the most amazing being that ever walked the earth and acted as the Divine Potter to shape receptacles of glory out of the common clay of human nature. For this is what Jesus the Christ did.

The author has projected distinct images of Jesus and his Apostles, described their day-to-day life, their trials and tribulations and has shown how they remained totally uncorrupted in the midst of falsehood and tyranny all round. The spiritual development of the Apostles in the hallowed association of the Master is beautifully delineated in this work.

The story of Jesus is charmingly narrated in a manner almost Biblical in its simplicity and grandeur

Sai Baba of Shirdi enters the hospital room and awakens the spirit body of Rabda. The two, Master and musician, begin to converse about life, death and everything in between.

The life and philosophy of Sai Baba of Shirdi are revealed, often in His own words, and questions pertaining to Him and spirituality answered. A powerful spiritual read, Rabda is a journey you really do not want to miss.

It contains The Religion of Man (1931), delivered as the Hibbert Lectures in Oxford in 1931, an extensive exposition of Tagore's understanding of the meaning and significance in the cultural history of man, Red Oleanders or Rakta Karabi (1925), a symbolic play describing the conflict between machine and the human spirit, Four Chapters (1934), a political novel and love story, denouncing terrorism at time when it was seen as an act of courage, dedication and sacrifice, The Hidden Treasure and Other Stories, a collection of eight of the writer's short-stories, Shesh Lekha, a collection of mostly untitled poems, bare, striking and Spartan and My Reminiscences (1911), a series of memory-vignettes of the poet's life that provides a unique insight into the life of a great literary genius.

One of India s most cherished figures, Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1914) was a novelist, short-story writer, poet, essayist, painter, educationist and thinker, the first non-European to be awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1913. He modernised Bengali literature, moving it away from its rigid classical form and strict linguistic structure. Known for works such as Gitanjali (Song Offerings), Gora (Fair-Faced) and Ghare-Baire (The Home and the World,) his novels, short stories and verse are considered part of the greatest of world literature, famous for their exploration of the political and the personal. He also wrote the national anthem of India, Jana Gana Mana, and of Bangladesh, Amar Shonar Bangla.

The first part of the book traces the history of Indian music and the continuity of its theory and practice for more than two thousand years. It is based on many years' research into the vast ancient Sanskrit literature of music. These valuable technical treatises, which lie in the form of scarcely catalogued manuscripts throughout the public and private libraries of India, had hitherto remained unemplored. Part Two transcribes and studies in detail 50 typical Raga-s. Each is preceded by a Sanskrit poem in translation which depicts the atmosphere; then follows an analysis of the scale, covering its intervals and expression, a study of the theme with its characteristic motives and finally a typical development. The present work is based on the author's two-volume Northern Indian Music published in London (but not America) some ten years ago, but long out of print and much sought after by students. It was described by Colin Mason in the Manchester Guardian as "of immense value to any practical musician" and "an invaluable addition to the very scanty literature of fascinating and neglected subject". This new version contains a number of additional Raga-s; the earlier text has been extensively revised and many music examples redrawn for greater clarity and accuracy. Some abridgement has taken place, but only of material which appeared originally for the benefit of Indian readers unfamiliar with Western staff notation, those able to read Sanskrit, and specialists in Sanskrit literature. The book provides modern composers outside India with a source of new inspiration and enables practising musicians to play and study some of the endlessly variegated modes for which Indian music is unique.

"The Raghuvamsa sings of the great solar race of Iksvaku in which Visnu was pleased to become incarnate as Rama, that he might destroy the demon Ravana and free the gods and men from his tyranny. This supremacy he had won through the favour of Brahman whom he had won over by his austerities. When, therefore, his yoke had become too hard to bear, when the gods themselves were enslaved or banished, they went to Visnu and sought his help. This the God readily agreed to do by becoming incarnate as Rama, Dasarathaís son; for the overweening demon, when he prayed to Brahman to be made invulnerable, had omitted to secure himself against mere human foes.

This story of the Ramayana forms the central theme of our poem. The first nine cantos trace the fortunes of Ramaís four immediate predecessors, cantos X to XV the story of Rama himself, his wonderful birth, his noble youth and manhood, his marriage with Sita, the latterís abduction by Ravana, Ramaís victory over Ravana and his happy reign, and the touching narrative of the bandon- ment of Sita upto the very end as we have it in the Ramayana; and cantos XVI to XIX carry on the tale of the kings who came after Rama to a sad decline in Agnivarna, ""a worthless libertine whose excesses had the merit of hastening his death."" His widowed queen who was pregnant ascends the throne as regent in behalf of her unborn son, and the poem as we have it abruptly ends on this note of hope."
